To dislike social walks?

I think it's daft and a waste of time. How can you talk to someone properly. Fair enough if you're walking the dog or nature watching with binoculars but to walk just for the sake of it when it is a social event seems odd. I've a friend who has asked me to meet up for a 2 hour walk. Great😊I've asked if I can bring my dog.

Light hearted.

You sound the total opposite of me. The city is fine if I'm there for a specific thing to do, but I NEED the fresh air and greenness of the countryside. The countryside is my "proper place".

I'm glad you enjoy it, and will hope for good weather for you.

Good job we don't all like the same things, I just got an email from the Tate about forthcoming exhibitions and will look forward to lovely days in the city, wandering with my camera, seeing wonderful art and recharging my batteries with the energy and vibe of London 😀

This sounds much more my cup of tea. I'm wondering if those who are anti-walk, pro-city are more extroverted? Even though I never thought I was to be fair.

Yes you mention two purposes there - My post is more about disliking walking as a social event. I've just walked about 6 miles around London because that had a purpose.

What was the purpose and would you not want company on that walk? Me and my sis love a walk and talk.

Talking to your friend and having a drink!

Both of which you can do whilst walking!

I’m in a walking group, it’s brilliant. Why can’t you walk and talk? That’s literally what we do. Then we go to the pub or garden centres for coffee and cake. It’s a great social thing to do and I’ve made so many new friends. It’s also good for your health and fitness. I’d rather walk and talk than sit in a cafe for 2hrs. The outdoors always make me feel more positive about life

Yes but the point is you don't need to! 😂You've already arrived to meet your friend now you can stop!

In love long walks with others. But if you don’t I can’t see you wouldn’t view it as a fun social occasion.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 01/01/2024 20:16

This thread has made me question whether I'm more extroverted that I realise. Especially with the city thing as well. Jung defined an extrovert as "someone who feels energized by the external world and social interactions"

ReTrainTheBrain · 01/01/2024 20:17

I'm quite extroverted so I like company and chats on my walks so I don't think that theory is true Smile

I enjoy walks and nature and I'll happily go by myself but I enjoy it more with a friend or two.

Zanatdy · 01/01/2024 20:19

Most of the people in my walking group are extroverted. Mainly because they braved joining a random group. I don’t think not liking walking means you’re an extrovert. Random thought that really

I love a museum and art etc too. What I find hard about the city is all the grey, so many people dashing about and their own heads, no real space.

I think OP nailed it in her response to this post of yours though. I'm definitely much more introverted and therefore feel more comfortable out in nature with one or two people (or more realistically, on my own with the dog) than somewhere that there's crowds of people. My sister on the other hand can think of nothing worse than being stuck in the middle of nowhere (countryside) and actively looks for city breaks.

Horses for courses.

It's because there were quite a few people who were singing the praises of no eye-contact on walks..so I thought they were shy or something.

Group vs one on one social walk is different though, so there could still be something in it.

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · 01/01/2024 19:06

I wouldn't mind if any of my friends were walking at a similar pace to me. I'm a fast walker and keep having to slow down so they can keep up, which irritates me

We now meet for meals / coffee, and I do my marching walking on my own with my headphones and an audio book

I too am a fast walker, I only have one friend that matches it and we often walk and talk. Otherwise it’s me and audible!

I can't get on board with it 😂walks should have a purpose. We should be walking somewhere because we need to go there 😝

That's what country pubs are for...

Namechange1008 · 01/01/2024 20:26

Weepingwillows12 · 01/01/2024 18:56

I like them. Don't like sitting still much. It feels more relaxed and less formal.

This!

I find it so much more awkward having a social catch-up sitting down in a pub or cafe. Just too much multitasking, having to worry about the practical logistics and wider social etiquette... Plus any silences are definitely more awkward...

Also I find the endorphins of exercising and being out in nature energise me and therefore my conversation.

Zanatdy · 01/01/2024 20:27

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 01/01/2024 20:21

It's because there were quite a few people who were singing the praises of no eye-contact on walks..so I thought they were shy or something.

Some people probably prefer a serious conversation not looking directly at the person. Teens tend to respond better when in the passenger seat for serious chats. You still look at the person when walking though, I do. Thinking about our walk today I definitely made eye contact a lot with each person I spoke to. I think we have more personal chats in the pub, maybe more relaxed then. It’s a good mix though, and I personally love seeing more of the countryside on our door step and getting healthier at the same time

Ellie1015 · 01/01/2024 20:27

I like walking with a friend or listening to a podcast. Fresh air and getting a bit of exercise puts me in a good mood.

I also like a coffee shop.

Cycling or horse riding don't appeal to me but I can understand why others do. There is no right or wrong way to chat.

RedVanYellowVan · 01/01/2024 20:29

About 80% of my social life is walking with friends. Love it, and so so my various friends.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 01/01/2024 20:13

Oh I see. We do that too. But we also just like looking at green spaces and flowers.

tbh I’m not sure what it is you don’t like, but I generally don’t go for leisure walks if it is windy or raining. I think maybe a leisurely walk in the sun with a friend might be something you’d like?

we do generally go to a pub after.

Summerbay23 · 01/01/2024 20:30

I’m the opposite, my friend and I have great chats while out walking/walking the dogs/kills two birds with one stone as neither of us have much time just to sit and chat. Plus I enjoy the exercise and fresh air.

369damnshesfine · 01/01/2024 20:32

I absolutely love walking, especially with company.

There’s nothing better than strolling through a woods and having a chat and feeling so good at the end.

I can’t stand just sitting still.

There’s one friend I refuse to walk with though, as her natural pace is like a power walk and I can barely keep up, let alone have enough breath to try and chat.

colourfulchinadolls · 01/01/2024 20:37

I actually prefer a walk/drive if I want to have a proper chat, there's less eye contact than a coffee and because talking is less of a focus and more of a by product it seems to come more naturally to me. I love a social walk.

Walks don't have to have a purpose or fixed destination imo.
