Ahh tonsillitis!

Started with the most horrific soreness and pain on one side of my throat last night and it's only getting worse today. No white spots yet but it's red and swollen on one side so I'm guessing the beginning of tonsillitis.

I'm doing salt water gargles and taking paracetamol. Really hoping it doesn't get bad enough for antibiotics as they really upset my stomach.

Has anyone else had this recently? Were you able to ride it out? At what point do you have to admit defeat and see a GP? Good old doctor Google informs me that even bacterial tonsillitis can sometimes clear up on its own but I don't really fancy starting the year feeling awful.

Recurrent sufferer here, it really is the most awful.

What I’ve found works is extremely high dose vitamin c (google this - to bowel tolerance), oregano oil capsules (natural antibiotic), echinacea drops (vogel do a good one) and an early night or two.

i have gone from being hospitalised on IV antibiotics 3 times in a year to being able to control it with the above

That's so helpful, thank you. I will get some vitamin c tablets and oranges tomorrow.

It's a strange thing because as in your case some people get really poorly to the point of hospitalisation and others seem to be able to fight it off on their own. I had it once years ago and was bedridden for days, really don't want that again.

I had a horrible bout of it at the end of November, and saw my practice nurse on the 2nd day when I saw how badly coated with pus my tonsils were. I was almost passing out sat in the waiting room and could barely swallow. She took one look and went to find a GP - they gave me a double course of doxycycline (I'm intolerant to loads and allergic to penicillin) and some uber strong painkillers so I could swallow fluids.

I am diabetic however, so I think they were just being over cautious.

I was surprised how bad it is when I had it. Haven't had an episode in a while, touchwood.

Really hope yours clears soon

FlyingCherub · 01/01/2024 19:23

Also forgot that gargling with peroxyl/hydrogen peroxide mouthwash seemed to really help speed up my recovery.

DH had it at Christmas. He was in bed with the agony - the only thing that touched it was Solpadeine. I always go to the Dr as soon as the white spots appear, as I'm sick of going when it's just inflamed and being told to wait it out in case it's viral. It never bloody is for me.

liveforsummer · 01/01/2024 19:27

You'll be lucky if they even give you anti biotics for tonsillitis these days. They'll claim it's the viral strain as long as they can. I've had huge success with covonia throat spray being someone who used to suffer with it recurrently. Don't remember the last time it developed to spots since using it as soon as I could feel it coming on

Banrion · 01/01/2024 19:32

Someone already recommended this but a high dose of the Vogel echinacea tincture. I am a recurrent sufferer. I used to have to take antibiotics all the time until I discovered echinacea. I'm not recommending you do this but telling you I do. I take a higher dose than what's recommended on the pack and its better after 2 days.
Edited to add do get the Vogel brand though.

I feel for you OP, I’ve hand tonsillitis many times OP and it usually absolutely floors me. I’ve had to get antibiotics every time bar the most recent when I got them but managed to go without them. I hate
taking antibiotics. Vanilla ice cream helps me personally with the sore throat and one of the few foods that doesn’t taste
awful. It really can be such an awful illness. Hope it is over quickly for you.

This was me this time last week! Started with a sore throat on one side. Every day was worse and worse until I eventually looked at my tonsils and saw they were covered in white spots! It's the most ill I've ever been - couldn't eat or sleep or do anything. Went to the doctor and she took one look at them and gave me antibiotics no argument! Wish I had gone sooner. I'm only just feeling better and white spots mostly gone on day 5 of antibiotics.
I've also been gargling salt water and antiseptic mouthwash regularly.

newyearnewmeandallthatjazz · 01/01/2024 20:19

I'm only day 2 so I will try and hold out a while first. No white spots yet just soreness on one side. Hurts to talk and swallow. I really hope it doesn't get too painful again I hate taking antibiotics.

Lemon squash or lemon barley water helped me when I had it bad. Salt gargle makes me heave. Vitamin c and zinc should boost your immune system and help you fight it off quicker??? Good luck x

MadeOfAllWork · 01/01/2024 20:25

I get it all the bloody time.
My best cure is as soon as I get that tightness I have a shot of neat vodka straight from the freezer. See the bastard try and survive that.

Mehmeh22 · 01/01/2024 20:26

I once got struck by a very sore throat to the point I lost my voice and couldn't swallow without agony. The doctors refused to give me antibiotics. Had it three weeks and reoccurring for 6 months before I insisted on a swab. Turns out it was strep throat. I've had it regularly since and the doctor doesn't dare suggest its viral now. Infact I'm just recovering now from another bout. Good ideas though for future...thanks!

Moversnotshakers · 01/01/2024 20:46

I had tonsillitis on my wedding day... was so ill .Couldnt cancel so had to just go thru the motions. Couldnt eat apart from couple of spoonfulls of ice cream. Wanted to go home but had to smile and speak to guests etc. I was also 22 weeks pregnant and felt rotten... The pain/headache and weakness was worse than labour. I sailed through that a few months later... luckily never had it since. So get an odd sore throat but like my wedding day.. its just horrible.

dothehokeycokey · 01/01/2024 21:08

Ah op I feel
Your pain

One of my dd came down with it really badly two weeks before Xmas bless her and she is a regular sufferer but said this was the worst she's ever known it.

8 days of antibiotics and salt water gargling for her.

I woke up Xmas day morning with a raw sore throat and horrendous sinus pains.
Went to gp on day three by which time I literally couldn't swallow and my head was so painful
To touch.

Although mine weren't quite at the full pussy stage it was starting but it was horrendously painful.

A high dose of anti biotics and she also recommended extra vit c all year round as well as echinacea

So five days later and it's only today I can't feel any soreness and can swallow and I still have a small sinus headache but much better than it was.
