Would you consider reporting a neighbour for this behaviour

On arriving home last night at 12.30. Couldn't find my cat anywhere, eventually he came out from under the bed looking terrified.

Today I've gone out to my car and seen used fireworks all over the shared driveway. Obviously the neighbour has let them off.

We are both renting from the same social housing provider. They are not the sort of people I feel comfortable confronting. I have to keep my windows closed all summer because the smell of them smoking weed.

Do I report them or let it go as a one off?

I don't think u have a case for reporting people setting off fireworks

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 01/01/2024 15:29

What would you be reporting them for?

Setting off fireworks is completely legal so unless you think they did something horrible to your cat with the fireworks there would be nothing to report.

usernother · 01/01/2024 15:29

Report them for setting off fireworks on NYE? Why can't they do that if they want to?

SquirrelRed · 01/01/2024 15:29

Report them for what? Is it against the terms of your lease to set off fireworks?

Nicknacky · 01/01/2024 15:29

Report them for setting off fireworks? Is there something in your housing contract that forbids that?

Fifthtimelucky · 01/01/2024 15:29

I'm sorry your cat was frightened but I can't see that your neighbours have committed any offence.

Having said that I gather different local authorities have different rules on fireworks, so I'd check on their website just in case.

pilates · 01/01/2024 15:30

No

RoseAndRose · 01/01/2024 15:31

If they were doing it all the time, then yes.

But letting off fireworks on NYE won't be taken as a nuisance, as it's a one off entirely predictable time for it to happen.

Mygosh · 01/01/2024 15:31

I just think it's anti social that they've used my side of the driveway (I was out in car)to set off their fireworks and left marks all over my block paving. Suppose I'm annoyed because they generally don't give a shit.

NYE is a designated day where letting off fireworks is allowed until 0100 hours , along with Diwali and the Chinese New Year . Any report made won’t go anywhere until it’s specifically not allowed at any point by the housing provider.

BeaRF75 · 01/01/2024 15:38

People on this site are bizarrely obsessed with "reporting". Who would you report them to, for a start?
Just ignore, and get on with your life.

WashItTomorrow · 01/01/2024 15:41

You’ve got no case here. It’s NYE. The driveway is shared -I suppose that means you both have equal use of it.

Chickpea17 · 01/01/2024 15:47

But you have nothing to report!!
Imagine hundreds of fireworks got set off last night all over the country which isn't illegal

Chickpea17 · 01/01/2024 15:47

Don't have *

So who are you going to report it too? For all you know they could have been the kinda quiet fireworks. You weren’t in to hear them

sprigatito · 01/01/2024 15:50

Is it "your side of the driveway", or is it a shared driveway that they are equally entitled to use? What kind of marks do spent fireworks really leave, and is it a big problem?

It does sound like you are planning to make a spurious complaint because you don't like them, tbh.

Mygosh · 01/01/2024 15:54

I was always told you are only supposed to let fireworks off in your garden. But then I am ND and silly things upset me. The single ignition boxes are still on the driveway, which is between the two houses. I can only guess it was very loud. For people asking who I'd report them to, it'd be the housing association, but after reading your comments I'll just accept it as a one off. Thank you.

I hate the bloody things and think they should be licensed for organised public displays only. As things stand, though, your neighbours aren’t doing anything illegal.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/01/2024 15:57

If they've damaged the driveway, report to the houseing association so you don't get blamed for the damage. If the marks will wash off, then leave it.

Mygosh · 01/01/2024 15:57

I've lived here 3 years and have never complained about anyone for your information. I don't like the smell of weed. I don't like the fact they've used my side of the driveway to let off their fireworks. But I'm actually going to just let it go. The driveway is shared in the sense that it, goes from house to house without being divided, but one side is theirs, one is mine.

Understandably you are upset because of your cat and my dog hates them also but nothing you can do. New Year's Eve and everyone lets off fireworks but they should have done them away from your house but just let it go and give your cat lots of cuddles if she allows.
