To be scared that I’m still marked by the crows?

ChoccyOrangeYum · 31/12/2023 23:14

A couple of years ago I walked the dog on a local field. I know nothing about birds but I was later told it was their breeding season.

Anyway we must have got too close to their nests as they suddenly started flying around irrationally, making a hell of a racket screaming etc and then started dive bombing the dog. The dog thought this was fun so started chasing the crows. All hell broke loose basically and we were suddenly surrounded by crows going mental. We made a quick exit!!

I left it a few days then took the dog back on the field but after speaking to locals about the crows I stayed away from the back of the field (where they’re breeding) and kept dog in lead. As soon as we stepped on the field the noise started up again and the crows appeared and started dive bombing again! There was someone else on the field with a dog who the crows were totally ignoring!

We left and after a bit of research I found that crows remember faces and don’t forgive easily 😬 so we didn’t go back on.

A whole year later we went back on assuming the old crows won’t be there anymore but we were on there 5 minutes before it all started again. These birds are not bothering anyone else on the field, just me!!

Anyway my neighbour has suggested we go for a walk in the field tomorrow morning but I’m shit scared of the birds. Will they still go for me if I don’t have the dog?! Will they ever move on from the incident 2 years ago or am I banned from the field for life?!

Bit worried about the whereabouts of the OP.

Ivecomeoutoflurking · 01/01/2024 11:56

I've just stumbled across this fantastic thread but slightly worried that it seems the OPs update time of an hour has been and gone. Has anyone started a search party??

MissIndecisive2023 · 01/01/2024 11:58

This thread is fascinating! I’ve learnt so much! Hope all is well OP and you are on the road to redemption!

A new colony ? of crows try to set up at my house every Spring. They seem to be a splinter group from a nearby farm building. Every year as the new fledglings emerge from the nest the neighbouring crows kill them. We've tried so many ways to try and prevent this but they're brutal to the extent that they tap the roof and cause disruption to scare them out of the nests.
I agree with offering food, it's probably all you can do.

SkySecret · 01/01/2024 12:03

Ahh this is brilliant and hilarious 🤣 I love birds, they’re so clever. I have pigeons rather than crows, mine know their own names, often come when called and absolutely recognise different people.

Unicorn34 · 01/01/2024 12:05

They are incredibly intelligent and remember you! Sorry. You need to take some treats for them a few times and make amends.

Ok DH has been, crows were there watching he says but no assault. I’m just about to meet neighbour now and will update in either -
10 mins - it did not go well and I legged it home

1 hour - I’m now at peace with the crows

wish me luck! 🦅

Seems like all is well in that case! 😂

It's a murder of crows, I think.

It's a murder of crows, I think.

Appropriate in the circumstances, it literally is a bloodbath which happens above my conservatory every year.

spackleplumb · 01/01/2024 12:24

So can we assume OP has been taken in by the crows as a warning to others and won't be back on this thread?

Thindog · 01/01/2024 12:24

I love the crows, we feed them kitten biscuits, they appear when they are called.I have also seen a crow steal an egg from an hen and go and wash it in a puddle! In Spring they will sit on my very hairy pony’s back and help him moult by plucking loose hair. Wonderful creatures.

The crows are cross with you, they know your husband isn't you, I don't understand the logic here

Sunshineofyourlove · 01/01/2024 12:27

I'm worried that OP has been carried off by the crows.

😂😂😂😂😂

WhataPlank · 01/01/2024 12:32

At what point do we send out a search party for OP, who has clearly been kidnapped by the Crows?

seethebrightside · 01/01/2024 12:33

This definitely should be in classics.

WHERE IS THE OP???? I AM WORRIED!!!

Vicliz24 · 01/01/2024 12:34

I'm definitely thinking someone should check the crow field .

Almostalwayshappy · 01/01/2024 12:39

Very invested in this tale. My sister and I were dive bombed by crows in a park while we were walking our dogs. We call the path where it happened 'Crow Road' and don't walk there any more. It was really scary - she had to crawl away with her hands over her head. I will go back and leave a peace offering.

My Dad used to groom our stinky Lab by the back door. When he checked the bird box in the garden after the blue tits vacated it he found a nest entirely lined with our dog’s hair.

My parents had a mobile dog groomer and used to release the fur in the garden and the birds took it for their nests.

Crows remember. And they remember for a long time. Im Im not entirely sure but I think they tell their kids too.

One summer I heard a terrible commotion in my back garden, and looked out and there were crows bombing the lawn and a terrible racket with magpies, crows and jackdaws.

I got closer and noticed that my cat was there, holding a magpie at arms length - he had madee the mistake of catching it and didnt really realise what he was letting himself in for, and was now scared to let it go. All the magpies in the area had put out the warning cry, and they had then been followed by the crows. I got to him, held the magpie and let him escape to the house, although a flying magpie did get a good peck in as he fled. I checked over the magpie I had and he was fine, and I released him.

But from that moment onwards we always knew when my cat was coming home, as you could hear the magpies shouting at him as he came over the fields, up the lane and through the fence to the back garden. They completely ignored his brother who was able to go around in peace, because he hadnt been so stupid as to try to catch one of them. This continued for about 3 years until he sadly died 2 years ago.

They are no fools. They kept away from my father in law because he would shoot at them. Now he has been moved into a care home the crows and Jackdaws take great pleasure in sitting on the roof of his old house and cawwing. I guess they think they have won
