Watched a lot of Love Island Australia and MAFS Australia this year and follow a lot of the people from it now. Seeing all their stories all year and today for NYE, the sunshine, the beaches, the groups of girls all just having the best time being young in such a beautiful country with the best sort of lifestyle and it makes me feel sad!

I'm in my late twenties married with two kids, boring job, normal family life style but I look and think god could I of done that? Could life of been like that?

One of my old friends is currently in Australia so I'm seeing their insta stories all day everyday and it's made the pining worse than ever, I've never even been there and I find myself just wishing I could do life again and be born there Blush

Good! I’m a non racist, non misogynistic Brit/Aus but we don’t suffer fools in Aus, so you would NOT fit in 😂😂😂

@Ozgirl75 where in my post did I say I lived there?

You've not hit a degree in detective work have you?

I've family there, visited there, they're all racist and misogynistic!

Do you realise how dumb you sound, with your ridiculous assumptions.

Go back read my post, slowly and try your very hardest to understand it.....

Hmmm, reading comprehension failure. Maybe try reading @Ozgirl75 post again, slowly and carefully this time.

I do not think k the aborigines are racist, not one bit!

How could you possibly know that?

2024IWillBeNurturingMe · 01/01/2024 18:23

Are you laughing at the idea of going to Amsterdam? Really? Have you been? An amazing city to visit. Fremantle doesn’t nearly compare, sorry.

Yes, I have been to Amsterdam and I wouldn’t go there again.

Maybe it’s you who needs to brush up on your comprehension skills and go back and read her post slowly, trying your very hardest to understand it.

You come onto this thread to be highly disparaging about an entire country, and make yourself appear awful. You may not be awful, but you’re doing a good job of coming across that way.

What makes you think you’re so superior to the people you’re disparaging?

I think you meant to say, First Nation's People?

enchantedsquirrelwood · 01/01/2024 19:38

The Brits I met whilst working overseas: Where are you from? What school did you go to? Do you know XXXX, their great grandad was a Lord/ Brigadier/ made millions doing XXX. Where are you going on holiday? Depending on your answers, you'll be put in a class box, and then treated accordingly

yeah right - as if most British people are on speaking terms with a Brigadier (or their great grand kids)

Although you're right about holidays. If you go to Australia on holiday, or ski-ing, you are comfortably off. It's not about "class", it's about income,

Of course, it makes little sense to say that everyone who lives in the UK is the same, or even everyone who lives in England.

If you are partly Brit you'll know that it's a truism that Northern English people don't suffer fools gladly either. Or Scottish people, come to that.

All a stereotype, obvs

Ozgirl75 · 01/01/2024 19:46

I’m from the south of England so I do suffer fools, sometimes gladly, sometimes not.

TroglodytesTroglodytes · 01/01/2024 20:04

I see that this thread has moved on, but going back to the OP, I’ve really noticed all the social and mainstream media coverage of Oz At Christmas this year. It never used to be a thing, now it seems to have become an opportunity to print photos of women in bikinis.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 01/01/2024 20:52

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/01/2024 17:33

Indeed. Actually, a friend of mine who has lived out there said the thing she missed most was the "green" of England

And why is England so green? Did she also miss the rain/damp?

echt · 01/01/2024 20:59

I think it's the quality/hue of the green. Unless it's exotic trees in the urban areas, native trees are constantly in leaf so you don't get that spring rush of fresh green.

EasternStandard · 01/01/2024 21:01

I absolutely love eucalyptus and often the grass would be yellow in summer when we visited

But I also love the fresh greenness of the UK when returning

There’s beauty in both imo

LePanthere · 01/01/2024 21:03

EasternStandard · 01/01/2024 08:38

that said whe I was paying rent two years ago it was $600 per week

What’s your rent like now?

I own my own home, the mortgage payment is much less

Hesma · 01/01/2024 21:18

I lived there for 4 years and came home as I’d had enough. Racism, classism, not particularly welcoming people. I did enjoy my time there but chose not to go for permanent residency

LePanthere · 01/01/2024 21:27

Goodlard · 01/01/2024 17:42

In my opinion it's not a beautiful country! It may be sunny.

But I found the people

Misogynistic
Racist

They have no understanding of other cultures because it's miles from so many places, so they often can only travel to other cultures for a week or more, no weekends away in other cultures.

I think the way that the aborigines are treated is appalling.

I wouldn't live there if you paid me.

Over a quarter of all Queenslanders were born overseas. Another quarter has a parent born over seas. That means that around half of Queenslanders are culturally diverse.

i think your comments demonstrate your own ignorance here.

StartupRepair · 01/01/2024 21:28

Note for the UK posters 'aborigines' in lower case is offensive. Please write Aboriginal people or First Nations people.
I lived in the UK in the 80s and encountered many examples of unfiltered and more subtle racism. However I believe that UK culture has moved on since then, despite the eager embrace of Brexit.

Agreed. Also laughing at the idea that a weekend away gives someone an insight into another country's culture Grin

So unlike The Black and White Minstrel Show, which graced British TV screens in the 70s...

Iirc, it ran until 1978, a run of approximately 20 years. It had 16 million regular viewers in its heyday.

Despite some protests over the years, the BBC failed to understand how offensive it was, and it was only canned because by 1978 variety shows in general were less appealing to audiences than they had once been.

Love Thy Neighbour is another good example. Epitome of a racist TV show!

I don't even think the English are inherently racist, I'm just here to defend myself from all of these English people accusing me of being racist. So insulting!

Comfortablechair · 01/01/2024 23:08

I lived in Sydney for 10 yrs as well as having lived in NY briefly, raised in London and spent a lot of time in Paris due to spouse. So my thoughts:

  • The lifestyle in Australia is incredible easily the best in the world if you are an outdoorsy person - I don’t particularly like water but if you do you’ll be in heaven
  • IMO the police there are much more present and feared - this is good cos I felt much safer than London and much much safer than Paris. You do not mess with cops out there they come down hard
  • It is really far from anything and you get a lot less holiday (20 days) plus it takes a day to get out of country so it’s different
  • outdoors events are plentiful and the odd good thing but other than that a cultural wasteland - people there just don’t care that much about arts etc
  • it can feel one dimensional and superficial (see MAFS comment) - the guys and gals all seem very similar and conformist - eccentricity is not really embraced like LDN or NY
  • there is diversity (particularly Asian community) however broadly speaking it is a fairly mono culture
  • international news and affairs aren’t that big and so you can feel v disconnected
  • the people can be a little cliquey kind of like a mid sized Uk town vibe - some people have said it is hard to make friends def harder than LDN

if I had family there (mum or dad) or a partner from there with a good family I’d def be there in a heart beat - as I don’t and I feel very British I couldn’t stay long term - too much sacrifice hope this helps

I assume you're stereotyping here? I'm Australian, and I'm not a racist or misogynistic, and I don't personally know anyone who is.

Edited

I think English are inherently racist given the colonist history, superiority complex and the class system that still is prevalent today. Also there many people who have mentally evolved passed this and obviously not all English people are racist. Many are though. Especially on MN.

GlorianaCervixia · 02/01/2024 01:05

Sydney monocultural? That's genuinely hilarious.
