To think Center Parcs really isn’t middle class

Just spent a few days there for the first time. It’s expensive and the people there seem to be v affluent in terms of clothes/cars, but middle class? I was surprised.

OP posts:

It’s not always about money!!!!!
Why on Earth do people equate what class you are with how much money you have or don’t have?
If a working class person won the lottery they would not become middle / upper class overnight!!! They would never be anything but working class. Ditto if a middle class person became bancrupt! They would always remain middle class!!

It’s not all about money but nor is money completely irrelevant. If someone who is born into a middle class family but becomes poor in adulthood such that they have to rely on benefits, struggle to afford to heat their home and feed their kids, then they are most certainly no longer middle class.

They may wish to still think of themselves as middle class as a ‘safety blanket’, as someone put it upthread, but they’re not by most people’s standards.

fixies · 30/12/2023 17:54

It's certainly middle class prices! It's basically premier inn in lodge form with motorway service station vibes with the food snd drink. So it's not highly aspirational on either of those fronts.

The setting is nicer though and the activities are fab (if expensive). The spa is the only thing I'd rate apart from that. It's really quite high level.

OhmygodDont · 30/12/2023 17:54

A family member had their hen there… its basically a boring Butlins for those who think they are above Butlins.

Much better places to go and have lodge stays these days.

StaunchMomma · 30/12/2023 17:55

DuplicateUserName · 30/12/2023 16:13

It's about as middle class as Butlins and just as expensive.

Lolling at the idea that CP is 'as expensive as Butlins' 😂

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 30/12/2023 17:58

Yes, I was very disappointed. The pool had all sorts of working class scamps running about. Pirate Cove was like a council estate nursery. They also had a place called a ‘sports bar’, whatever that is.

And in the quiz they had questions about football and soap operas!

Verbena17 · 30/12/2023 17:59

Bunny2607 · 30/12/2023 17:52

It smelt like an old people’s home tbh. And the fact they have black boxes they must know there is an issue!
it didn’t help that on the 2nd night both my children were sick which obviously isn’t their fault but they couldn’t get any cleaning products to us. I didn’t expect them to
clean sick up we were happy doing it but all we had was fairy liquid and a mop which was already there. So it couldn’t be disinfected or properly cleaned it was awful. They came again the morning after to mop but it still stank.

Hmm, well I guess the sick smell really didn’t help. I always take anti bac and bathroom cleaner in case I need to redo anything but which Village were you at? I do think some of the older villas are sometimes a bit damp and so can smell a bit like that.

I do think they should wash the shower curtains after each stay because that does often smell sweaty 😬

notfeeblebutPhoebe · 30/12/2023 18:00

Always on MN why do we insist on putting people in "class" brackets is almost 2024 FFS.
Might that be because so many people here are aspirational. They are trying to work out what they have to do to improve the life chances for their families. They are observing closely those who are making it and those who are not quite.
If education, talent and hard work fail. Is it class that is holding them back?

fuckssaaaaake · 30/12/2023 18:01

I should probably point out that my DC are/were state educated, as was I. But if we weren't tied to the usual school holidays (as families with children in private school aren't) I would definitely not be paying school holiday prices for the exact same trip.

Don’t worry Pob: I don’t mean it unkindly. It’s just a silly thing for everyone to be discussing. It’s a holiday camp. It isn’t going to be sophisticated and beyond that what does it matter? One person’s tantruming toddler is as bad as the next surely?

Desecratedcoconut · 30/12/2023 18:04

Can I just say that I don't find it very middle class at all? I mean, there are people there who are actually enjoying themselves and who aren't contorted with anxiety about whether an activity can be considered worthy or enriching. Some aren't counting up the air miles on their dinner and some arrive as a pack with people they call friends, even though they don't necessarily bring any cultural capital to the party. Dreadful.

chickenpieandchips · 30/12/2023 18:04

We've just come back from CP.
Not sure which one you went to OP but we found an Atticus and a mum tried to tell a bemused looking boy off for pushing in on the rapids 😂.
We decided it was too expensive (restaurants especially) and far better value to go elsewhere!

Lemonfoxtrot · 30/12/2023 17:15

Most MN thread ever…

but I think I get what OP is trying to say…

we all know that many ‘working class’ jobs pay way more than some traditional middle class jobs. ( I’m sure many builders earn more than an out of London/ non magic circle law firm)

I’m imagining that rather than the quiet middle class types who cycle to work, shop at Boden and eat couscous, the place is now full of plumbers and their beauty therapist wives who drive Range Rovers ( leased obvs!). The type whose dream holiday is Disney rather than camping in a chic little campsite in the Dordogne.

as a pp has said, lots of swearing in queues, smoking, and poor grammar.

I post without judgement or comment! It takes all types to make a world! 😁

DH is self employed in the building industry and makes very good money. And rather than being a beauty therapist, I have a professional-ish job. I don’t drive a Range Rover and my dream holiday is probably the Amalfi Coast.

I wear Boden and definitely don’t swear. I do lots of Pilates and am a season ticket holder at our local football club.

its amazing how people have misconceptions about builders and their wives.

Begsthequestion · 30/12/2023 18:06

Calliopespa · 30/12/2023 17:50

Gosh! What kind of un-classy toddler would do that?

😧 surely not a middle class one! They'd take after their parents, who often have unusually tight sphincters, which helps hold those sticks in place😂

I agree.

I’ve always thought it was like Butlins for people who are too posh to go to actual Butlins.

Poblano · 30/12/2023 18:07

It's fine @Calliopespa. As it happens we're going next week - the older DC are at university now but have many happy memories of CP from when they were younger and still enjoy a break there while they're home for Christmas.

No idea what class we are, have no plans to survey our neighbours on what class they are either. Just hoping for some nice family time, an afternoon in the Spa with DD and a sizzling fajita stack at Huck's 😁

We were at Sherwood Forest stayed in Maple 8.
yeah in hindsight i should have taken some cleaning products and its a lesson learnt but i also thought that paying £1300 for three nights it would be immaculate 😂 it was quite old fashioned too i thought. We booked a “new style” lodge expecting it to be modern, all we found was a turd brown sofa, a tv no bigger than a postage stamp and a filthy rug 🤮🤮

Marchitectmummy · 30/12/2023 18:08

If you want middle class, camp. Campsites are full of the middle classea, not CPs.

Hiddenpeople · 30/12/2023 18:08

Dolphinbus · 30/12/2023 17:07

I don’t disagree with you OP! Can you be more specific about what you mean tho? I find it is priced to keep out the riff-raff, as purely money driven holidaymakers will go to butlins or haven instead since CP is expensive, but I find the standard of the accommodation isn’t up To middle class standards 😳 it’s gone downhill the last couple of years. I suspect the group that owns it are in financial difficulties.

Also, money doesn’t buy class… someone still took a $h!t in the pool when we were there last, closed the place down for half a
day while they cleaned it and emptied the water and refilled it.

Same thing happened when we went 😂 at least they are thorough.

kitsuneghost · 30/12/2023 18:09

No center parks is working class
Middle class is a cottage in the cotswolds

WombatChocolate · 30/12/2023 18:10

CP isn’t mc, it’s expensive because it’s an easy holiday for people who can’t face organising their own activities on holiday and want it all laid on and so pay more for it. Similar things which are actually quite expensive but not necessarily a class-based thing are cruises, buying carpets from Carpet - Right, kitchens from Howdens, and any other expensive object from an all-in kind of place that supposedly makes it ‘easy’ for those lacking the imagination or ability or contacts to look into independent suppliers and find a better range and probably a better deal.

It’s like all-inclusive or package holiday…although doesn’t include food. You book, turn-up and don’t have to think much about it. So you don’t have to check-out what activities are in the local area, how far it is to the shops or restaurants, or argue with your kids about what to do each day or put them in the car, or go on a genuinely long walk anywhere. It is a sanitised Butlin’s without the Bingo for people who want something similar, but think Butlin’s is beneath them and who can cobble together more cash.

There’s a big market for this stuff. Plenty of people are actually reasonably well-off or will get into debt to go on holidays like CP, or Disneyland. It works for small families or multi-generational groups and is carfefully marked to suggest it’s aspirational. So people go and don’t feel embarrassed to say they’re going to CP whereas they might with Haven. They could get a beautiful cottage or holiday home in a genuinely beautiful location, with stunning beaches, surfing, walking, countryside around and fabulous local restaurants, but finding the accommodation would involves some research or knowledge of places and some effort to organise activities and find places to eat out each day. And lots of people don’t seem to have the capacity to do these things or are willing to pay for the package which has everything on site.

It’s a different kind of holiday and often for different kind of people (although actually, lots of people who would organise their own holidays too often goo too) and CP has found a winning formula. People keep paying the increasing prices and seem to like it and have a good time….so like with Butlin’s in the 60s,70s and 80s, who is to complain really if people enjoy it. No-one has to go. Its moment will probably pass, but for now it’s doing well and people enjoy it and will pay. Anyone who didn’t enjoy it doesn’t have to go again.

I suppose one of the things about a ‘camp’ or ‘village’ location is that you can’t really avoid the other people there…esp at peak times. At the pool or even just about you will see and hear the masses. For some people, they only feel comfortable with those ‘like them’ and this is where mass gatherings don’t work for everyone. Lots of people want seclusion on holiday which is why cottages and genuinely independent holiday homes where you aren’t 3ft from next door or constantly seeing the same family everythwer you go are popular. But it’s a consequence of going to a camp, whether it’s Butlin’s or Center Parks or a Cruise or an AI resort….you’re stuck with the people there.

Carouselfish · 30/12/2023 18:10

Middle is very broad though isn't it? I thought the thread would be about it being full of wealthy chavs rather than being upper class!

Just1MoreMinute · 30/12/2023 18:15

No. In fact, it’s the new money who are filling up private schools these days. Most of the kids going to private school these days are ‘first generation’ in private school.

Wealth doesn’t define class; how you spend it defines class.
