To think Center Parcs really isn’t middle class

Just spent a few days there for the first time. It’s expensive and the people there seem to be v affluent in terms of clothes/cars, but middle class? I was surprised.

OP posts:
Gallowayan · 30/12/2023 22:30

Should have written "middle class" not working in my last sentance. Sorry for confusion.

Beezknees · 30/12/2023 22:31

I'm working class and been to Centre Parcs. Cost me £299 for 4 nights.

Seymour5 · 30/12/2023 22:39

@PrincessHoneysuckle its not pretentious. Its a safe environment that suits all ages. The beds are comfy, we’ve never not enjoyed our stay, and we’ve been a few times over the years.

Gallowayan · 30/12/2023 22:45

@palygold I think you may have failed to notice that this is an ironic thread. The OP was certainly a wind up😆

Most people are middle class. 70% of the population. People like to pretend they are working class cause its way cooler. But usually their lying LOL

It's alright to be middle class. Accept and embrace it

Wrong!

Most people, some 80% are of the population are working class. Yes there are gradations of the the working class, not all are in receipt on benefits, in council houses, tattooed and loud in a region accent sort of way.

Maybe 19% or so are middle class, and again there are gradations of it but what unites us a a focus on education, professional careers and traditional values. There are many new middle class families that have apired their way to climb the social ladder and they certainly wouldn't think being working class is "cool"!

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 30/12/2023 22:51

Middle class / lower class / upper class who cares.

it’s way way overpriced and full of kids. It’s a firm no from me.

I'm 100% working class! No question.

I don't think most middle class people pretend they are working class?

dingledells · 30/12/2023 22:23

The situation and family to which you were born largely dictates which class you are in. You can just change class in one lifetime!! Even if someone fell on extremely hard times, claimed benefits and couldn’t afford a bean they would still be middle class!! It’s nothing to do with loosing or gaining money in your life.

Would Carole Middleton really still be working class though?

Why would Carole Middleton be working class? Sorry if I’ve missed a post

My BIL is obsessed with CP, he’s definitely WC he thinks going there makes him appear wealthy. It doesn’t. The one time I went it was full of Porsches and Bentleys, I imagine it’s a convenient break for the wealthy but not a main holiday. For my BIL it’s his main holiday. I’m sure he thinks it’s MC.

It’s nice he enjoys it - which I guess is the point in the end. I wouldn’t but I’m glad he does. And who knows: I might be missing out. 🤷‍♂️

It's low-brow. But then the middle class almost always is. Parochial, unimaginative and fearful. Center Parcs is perfect for them.

Love this 😂

Gallowayan · 30/12/2023 20:39

The middle class signifiers used in mumsnet (NT car stickers AGA etc ) are ridiculously stereotyped.

MC people are just as likely to appreciate end of pier commedy (with plenty of nob gags thrown in)

This sort of entertainment would certainly bring in more "solidly middle class" punters to Centre Parks IMO.

Hah! Quite! I know a handful of incredibly posh people (am in law in the City so it’s kind of inevitable), and most love Mrs Brown’s Boys, and the old Carry On films!

The issue is he has for years complained he can’t go on ‘holiday’ because he spends so much going there 2 weekends a year. Probably surrounded by people who don’t think it’s very expensive. He’s very ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ though.

Oh no! Were there non-Guardian readers there? People who graduated from a non-Russell Group university? Those who, for some reason, drive an expensive car but have never read any Hilary Mantel novels? People who live in a period house in a naice area but have never put a "VOTE REMAIN" sticker in their bay window? Those who don't seem short of cash but have an estuary accent? Dreadful. Look into counselling.

What do people read other than The Guardian? 😕

This is the most insane thread I think I've ever read on Mumsnet and that's saying something.

You're not trying hard enough.

Anything written by grown-ups.

Centre parcs is for people who like idea of being outdoorsy without actually being so.

Actual outdoorsy people are hiking the fells somewhere, staying in a tent or cottage or camper van, not cycling 2km round ready made paths through a few trees.

Centre parcs is fantastic for those with disablities, disabilty access lodges are very well equipped, and all areas of the parks are accessible. It’s the only place a very close friend of ours can actually access everything on holiday.

If it's at CP, perhaps the Racing Post?
But on their phones.

EasterGleeba · 10/02/2024 22:56

Am currently at CP and just googled "chavvs at CP" and this thread came up. I can confirm it's full of the worst tattood chavvs anyone has come across. How they can afford it is beyond me!

logo1236 · 10/02/2024 23:00

Only in the UK is class determined by things like your accent instead of your financial status, it's bizarre. I have heard someone refer to Wayne Rooney as working class, the man is literally a millionare...

Ostu · 10/02/2024 23:58

Oh I'm pretty sure all countries have societal/cultural class markers. Trump, for example, isn't considered upper class and neither are the Kardashians.

Children and future generations of Rooneys may be middle class, their education, peer groups and life opportunities will be significantly different from their parents. Wayne isn’t.

Accent, grammar, taste, attitudes to education, employment are often class markers. An overt display of wealth isn’t. CP is relatively expensive so there will be a mix. People will find their own tribes there!

So in your mind, anyone with a tattoo is poor? 🤔
You’re not at CP for long - you should be having fun and not wasting all of your time being nasty & judging everyone else.
