To take this antibiotic for toothache

I've got a tooth (root canal that hasn't been completely successful) I prob have some tissue still there or a crack, no one can say for sure as a few dentists have checked it.

It's playing up now, content nagging pain rather than 'go and bang head against wall' agony. However, my gums are so sore on the side of the tooth and the upper bit of my tongue too, reaching into the left side of my throat so it hurts to swallow. I'm saving the painkillers for nighttime and using waterpik, plus salt water mouth rinse. It's been like this for a couple of days, I hoped it would go. To be fair it's not getting worse.

But I have some flucoscillian for a skin infection which I didn't end up using. According to google OK for teeth too.

Obviously I can't get any help or advice until at least Tuesday.

I don't like using antibiotics (resistance etc) but I am very tempted to.

Thoughts?

YANBU take the antibiotics

YABU Just sit with the pain

Take the painkillers properly and if you think it may be an infection call 111 and get something right prescribed if needed

Emergency dentists will still be available over the weekend, just ring your local one and they'll have an OOH contact.

I wouldn't take antibiotics when you don't know if you even have an infection.

You can get "anbesole from a pharmacy,or a clove type topical liquid.I found they work better than oral painkillers.

You don't really care about antibiotic resistance do you? Firstly it's not really the right antibiotics, secondly toothache isn't treated with antibiotics. Find an emergency dentist

Toothache is treated with antibiotics if the reason is an infection

I guess if I didn't care about antibiotic resistance, I wouldn't have posted? It's the inflammation on my inner cheek, tongue and throat that is making g me think infection.

Even if infection antibiotics are only indicated if there'd significant facial swelling or raised temperature. A minor infection would still be treated with extraction/rct or a gum abscess treated with debridement

Especially I'd your someone who cares about antibiotic resistance as OP does

Have you got a chemist or boots nearby. Oragel is amazing for deadening the area. It's supposed to be amoxicillin but I don't see why yours wouldn't help, they're both for infection anyway. Resistance isn't built up that fast

You've given a passing thought to antibiotic resistance

OMG, if you don't know what you are talking about, saying nothing is always an option.

DoAWheelie · 30/12/2023 16:11

Don't take antibiotics that haven't been prescribed for this exact issue. Do get it seen if you think it is infected though.

The antibiotics required will differ depending on what has caused the infection and taking the wrong ones will either do nothing, or help the bacteria get stronger and harder to kill.

wineandsunshine · 30/12/2023 16:24

Having just had extraction surgery for a failed root canal, don't take anything that hasn't been properly prescribed. As a PP has mentioned, they treat different things. I initially had amoxicillin which didn't help so they gave me one that targeted it differently.

Hope it settles - toothache is relentless x

I find garlic is an effective substitute for antibiotics. I take a couple of garlic capsules every two hours. My dentist has even prescribed them at times
