What are ‘all the trimmings’?

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

Mash
roasties
carrots
creamed leeks
broccoli
sprout
parsnip
gravy
and Yorkshire puddings with pigs in blankets

Friedfriedplantain · 29/12/2023 17:51

I adore Yorkshires (and am from Yorkshire) but Yorkshires aren't for Christmas. No logic to it. They just aren't.

Two types of potato on the table is how you know it's Christmas 😁

CandyLeBonBon · 29/12/2023 17:51

'No Yorkshires' is a crime against humanity!

Bread sauce is nothing like gravy?

You have it with the rest of the meal + gravy.

Sure, but it is a sauce. So I didn't know if people have both sauces (bread and gravy) or one or the other. Hence the question.

I don't get having two runny sauces.

Yorkshires unless with beef should be illegal!

Elderflower14 · 29/12/2023 17:52

Turkey, Sprouts., Red Cabbage, Roast Potatoes and Parsnips, Bread Sauce, Stuffing, Gravy and Cranberry Sauce.

It's not really runny though? More like mash if done properly.

I forgot sprouts. DH is allergic and won't have them in the house but they are part of the ideal Christmas to me.

CandyLeBonBon · 29/12/2023 17:53

@DappledThings bread sauce is thicker in consistency than gravy.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/12/2023 17:53

Bread sauce is delish and I could eat it on its own.

CandyLeBonBon · 29/12/2023 17:53

I WILL fight you @DappledThings 😂

CommonOrNot · 29/12/2023 17:54

Trimmings were

  • turkey and beef
  • Sprouts with pancetta and chestnutes
  • honey glazed roast carrots
  • honey glazed roast parsnips
  • yorkshires
  • roast potatoes
  • mash
  • yorkshires
  • red cabbage in cider
  • stuffing
  • mac and cheese
  • turkey gravy
  • beef gravy
  • cranberry sauce
  • mustard
  • horseradish
  • (would have also done cauli cheese and broccoli but no one likes it)

CommonOrNot · 29/12/2023 17:55

Oh sorry pigs in blankets also

Ah, I didn't realise that. I've never seen it in real life!

TeenLifeMum · 29/12/2023 17:56

Normal roast and veg plus sausages and bacon rolls (pigs and blankets separate in this house), stuffing and sausage meat. Mum adds bread sauce but only for her.

yorkshires go with beef and red wine so that’s next week’s dinner. Love them but not with turkey, so wrong 😂

Racingadmin · 29/12/2023 17:56

Roast potatoes
Brussel sprouts with bacon
Honey glazed carrots and parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Red cabbage
Yorkshire puds
4 types of stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Gravy
Cranberry sauce

We had ham cooked in cola and roast beef as well as turkey ( plus salmon for sil)

Roastiesarethebestbit · 29/12/2023 17:56

Toned down year in our house. Trimmings this year were

roast potatoes
Braised red cabbage
Steamed green cabbage
steamed Brussel sprouts
caramelised carrots
honey parsnips
Bread sauce
gravy

muddyford · 29/12/2023 17:57

Turkey with bacon draped over it, parsley and thyme stuffing, sausages, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts, perhaps cauliflower, and my superb gravy. And cranberry sauce. But everyone is different.

Mrsgreen100 · 29/12/2023 17:58

Mystifying, why do people serve more than one type of potato?
and Yorkshires are with beef no

SecondHandFurniture · 29/12/2023 17:58

As a Yorkshirewoman, you don't need yorkies. They don't fit on the plate anyway and end up balanced awkwardly on the parsnips.

We always have root veg mash as I need something not roasted otherwise it's a bit dry - roast potatoes, parsnips, sprouts and carrots here. With pigs in blankets and stuffing.

Mirabai · 29/12/2023 17:59

We always have the same:

Stuffed Turkey and/or roast ham with Oxford sauce
Chestnut stuffing
Bread sauce
Cranberry relish
Devils on horseback
Pigs in blankets
Gravy
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Roast carrots
Brussels sprouts
Red Cabbage

Absolutely not :
Yorkshire pudding
Cauliflower cheese/leeks or other nursery food.
No Mediterranean vegetables like broccoli
More than 1 kind of potato

DungareesAndTrombones · 29/12/2023 18:00

Roasties
Honey roast carrots
Cheesy leeks
Cauliflower cheese
Pigs in blankets
Spiced red cabbage
Sprouts with chestnuts
Yorkshire puds
Stuffing x 2
