What are ‘all the trimmings’?

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 29/12/2023 16:56

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

We're a mix of vegetarians and non vegetarians so do:

Chicken (everyone hates turkey) or Quorn roast
Roast potatoes
Pigs in blankets (+ vegetarian version)
Yorkshires
Stuffing (vegetarian)
Cauliflower cheese
Roast parsnips with honey and wholegrain mustard
Carrots
Sprouts
Peas (for those not liking sprouts ie ASD child)
Gravy, apple sauce, cranberry sauce, mint sauce.

Ilovecleaning · 30/12/2023 18:54

Whoever said ‘baked beans’ is taking the piss.

Elisi · 30/12/2023 18:54

Christmas specific trimmings? One bottle each of sherry, Black Label whiskey, Grey Goose vodka, Bombay Sapphire gin, JD bourbon, a box each of red and white wine, cola, lemonade, tonic water, fresh oj, lemons and ice. Serve with hot beef/turkey sandwiches if peckish. In my experience, nobody wants to cook a Christmas meal, by the time it's done everyone has had a couple and sitting down trying to look appreciative at a positive mountain of food is difficult, the cook (ie me) is sweaty and stressed and has missed the fun, I refuse to cook them any more!

Completelydonechick · 30/12/2023 18:58

Pigs in blankets
brussels and chestnuts
honey glazed parsnips
heritage carrots
apricot, garlic and coriander stuffing
bread sauce
cranberry sauce with port
red braised cabbage and apple
sweet potato and red onion mash

it’s all about the trimmings at Christmas!

chaosmaker · 30/12/2023 19:04

We always had Dubonnet, just a tiny sherry glass full just before dinner when I was a child. Anyone know if they still make it?

Tryingtogetonwithit · 30/12/2023 19:06

We had:
Turkey obviously
Gammon
Stuffing
Roasties
Mash potato
Carrots and parsnip/turnip mashed or roasted
Brussels
Pigs in blankets
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Pickled onions
Braised red cabbage

Christmas pud
Alternative pudding/cheesecake/pavlova
Brandy butter
Cream

RolyPolyLilBatFacedGirl · 30/12/2023 19:29

Roast parsnips & carrots
Cabbage & leeks in cheese sauce

And just about every condiment known to man!!

Reesescheeses · 30/12/2023 19:32

basics:
pigs in blankets
stuffing
parsnips
carrots
gravy
cranberry sauce
bread sauce

extras desired by me:
cauliflower cheese
red cabbage

extras DH thinks are necessary:
chipolatas
beef
gammon

Harls1969 · 30/12/2023 19:35

MIL's: turkey, gammon, pigs in blankets, stuffing, roast potatoes, roasted parsnips, carrots, Brussels with bacon and chestnuts, red cabbage, gravy, bread sauce, cranberry sauce

Mine: turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing, Brussels with bacon and pine nuts, roast potatoes, carrots, Yorkshire puddings (I've had Christmas dinner in Yorkshire and they had puddings!), gravy and bread sauce.

Rhaenys · 30/12/2023 19:35

I’d say:

Turkey (or plant based alternative)
Stuffing
Roast Potatoes
Pigs in Blankets
Carrots (roasted, boiled or mashed with the parsnips)
Parsnips (either roasted or mashed with the carrots)
Sprouts
Broccoli
Cauliflower Cheese
Peas
Gravy
Cranberry Sauce

I personally wouldn’t include that much if I wasn’t cooking for a load of people though.

I also made braised red cabbage and now have loads in the freezer which I'll chuck out at some point because it won't get eaten 😂

sprigatito · 30/12/2023 19:40

Pigs in blankets, sprouts, carrot and swede mash, gravy, stuffing, caramelised parsnips.

No mash or Yorkshire puddings here; they go with the roast beef dinner on 27th for us. No bread sauce either because we aren't deviants.

So...a bellyful of hard liquor and nothing to eat but a sandwich if you can be arsed? Doesn't sound like much of a Christmas.

PrinnyPree · 30/12/2023 19:53

On top of the bird we had

Yorkshires (essential to make the best gravy ever)
Pigs in blankets
2 types of stuffing
Roast potatoes (maris piper & sweet potatoes)
Potato dauphinoise
Roast carrots and parsnips
Sprouts and savoy cabbage cooked with bacon and chestnuts
Cauliflower cheese
Steamed tenderstem brocoli, petite pois and carrots
Gravy made out of the meat juices, veg water bisto best, stock cube and a bit of left over yorkshire pudding batter
Cranberry sauce.

I've done a butternut squash, pecan nut and blue cheese wellington for veggie guests in the past too.

I think if my husband wasn't served pigs in blankets for Christmas dinner he'd walk out.. 😆

Waitingfordoggo · 30/12/2023 19:54

All that booze and a sandwich sounds like a really depressing Christmas to me. Just goes to show how different we all are!

Waitingfordoggo · 30/12/2023 19:58

Ooooh, Yorkshire batter in the gravy you say @PrinnyPree? Would never have thought of that! How much do you put in and what does it do for the gravy? Is it more about the taste or the texture?

One year my FIL dropped (and broke) the glass dish of pigs in blankets en route to the table.. I did that thing where you smile and say ‘don’t worry, we’ve plenty to eat without those’ while secretly thinking he had ruined Christmas 😂

No piss take . It’s DH’s home too. If he wants baked beans added to the groaning table of food we are paying for, as hosts, he gets baked beans. Heinz of course. Makes little odds if you choose not to believe it.

Shanda5 · 30/12/2023 20:03

We had

Turkey
Gammon
Roast potatoes
Parsnips
Carrots
Broccoli
Gravy

We also had (and these I would consider 'the trimmings)

Sprouts cooked in pancetta

Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce
Braised red cabbage

For me, I don't know why you would have any potatoes other than roast potatoes. They all pale in comparison. Just have more rosties!

MondayMania · 30/12/2023 20:10

We served:

Turkey
Ham
Roast potatoes
Honey roasted carrots and parsnips
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings
Cauliflower cheese
Broccoli
Peas
Cabbage
Sprouts with pancetta
Cranberry sauce
Pickled onions
Gravy (copious amounts!)

Elisi · 30/12/2023 20:21

@sprigatito It was a light-hearted reply. We tend to have quite a houseful on Christmas Day, and cooking a turkey crown and a joint of beef to go with artisan bread from our local specialist baker shop, sliced and set out on the dining table with accoutrements goes down well, we've found. Not everyone drinks as there are young children around, including my 2 grand-daughters, 2 great-nieces and my great-nephew. Everyone is fed well, no-one is sweaty and missing out on the children enjoying themselves, it's lovely.

Thefsm · 30/12/2023 20:31

Turkey, glazed ham, roast potatoes, sprouts (this year just halved, seasoned and drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and roasted with garlic, so nice!) Swede and turnip mash, peas, sweet corn, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, gravy, sausagemeat sage and onion stuffing balls, pigs in blankets (we missed those this year as there were no breakfast links left in the shops)… think that’s everything.

it’s effort to make as we are in USA so have to make from scratch most of the stuff I used to rely on Paxos and Bisto and aunt Bessie’s, but I guess it has made me a better cook :)

Ohhoho · 30/12/2023 20:33

Two different stuffings, carrots, sprouts, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, bread sauce. And really good gravy.

lol 😊. Good for your DH. X

Glitterinthegrey76 · 30/12/2023 20:47

No turkey, because none of us like it.

We had: roast beef, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, parsnips, honey glazed carrots, Brussels with bacon, tender stem brocolli, sausage meat and chestnut stuffing, horseradish and gravy. Oh, and Yorkshire puds, obviously!

Plus a good bottle of red 🍷 for those that do, and a non alcoholic Prosecco for me.

Jimmer253 · 30/12/2023 20:48

My dad is a creature of habit and has not changed our Christmas dinner AT ALL, for the 17 years he has hosted (he loves to host btw, and has invited varying numbers for this duration).
Turkey, Pork, Sausage meat, stuffing, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, mashed Sweden sprouts, runner beans & gravy. He will not tolerate a Yorkshire pudding unless it accompanies beef!
Next year my brother is hosting, so it’ll be interesting to see if he mix’s it up, but he is definitely turning into our dad, so I’ll guess it’s a no 😂.
I host and cook everyone at mine, multiple times throughout the year, and don’t let anyone lift a finger, so don’t feel guilty. I also put myself forward to tidy away, wash up/dry up after said Christmas dinner at dads (my bro and I do it together, and have proper giggle)
