What are ‘all the trimmings’?

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 29/12/2023 16:56

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

I dont like turkey but I do all the same whatever meat it is. I don't care if it 'goes'.

Meat
Roast potatoes
Yorkshire puddings
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Dh likes cauliflower cheese, I don't like it with gravy
Gravy

If having veg:
Peas
Possibly roast carrots
Possibly sweetcorn (hot)

Happilyobtuse · 30/12/2023 21:00

I think it really depends on who is hosting! For starters we had smoked salmon and a cheese board with crackers. I made turkey with bacon lattice served with gravy, roast beef with mushroom and ale sauce, roast potatoes, honey glazed parsnips, buttered carrots, brussel sprouts with pancetta, pigs in blanket and stuffing. We don’t like yorkshire pudding so didn’t do that.

Readinstead · 30/12/2023 21:15

Roast potatoes, roast parsnips and carrots, sprouts, peas, stuffing, cauliflower cheese, pigs in blankets, yorkshire puddings cranberry sauce and gravy. Usually there are also mash potatoes and/or croqettes but not this year. My dsis, who is a vegetarian, brings her own lunch because she doesn't want her quorn roast and veg cooked in the same oven as the turkey. She also has onion gravy and mustard. One Dgs had a birdseye chicken in breadcrumbs thingy because he doesn't like roast meat or sliced meat as he calls it and no gravy or sauce of any description.

Readinstead · 30/12/2023 21:17

Forgot to add that other 2 dgc also had tomato ketchup (as did at least one of the adults)

Mrschristmasqueen · 30/12/2023 21:31

Late to the party but we had;

Mash
Roast potatoes
Turkey
Beef
Yorkshire puddings
Roast carrots and parsnips
Broccoli
Sprouts
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Gravy
Cranberry sauce

And, I'm not ashamed to add, mushy peas AND pickled beetroot (Ok, the beetroot part is just me and DS but everyone else had mushies!)

facepalmdaily · 30/12/2023 21:31

We have 3 bird roast, beef, sprouts, pigs in blankets, stuffing, carrot and swede mash, roast potatoes, yorkies, peas, roast onions, honey roast parsnips and carrots, rich gravy, cranberry sauce, horseradish sauce.

I would have had cauliflower cheese and mash too if anyone else liked it.

ASongOfRiceAndPeas · 30/12/2023 21:37

We eat lamb and turkey and a LOT of trimmings. Braised red cabbage, stuffing, cranberry sauce, Yorkshire pudding, goose fat roast potatoes, steamed sprouts, honey roast carrots and parsnips, macaroni cheese and lots of gravy plus rice & peas obvs. All homemade

LJH001 · 30/12/2023 21:37

Mash
Roasts
Parsnips
Carrots
Peas
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire pudding
Sausage meat stuffing
Gravy
I also have lamb as not a great turkey lover so mint sauce too

blimmy · 30/12/2023 21:43

I hate the expression "all the trimmings" 🤢 it makes me think of bits being cut off or shaved off... But that's by the by.... For Christmas dinner I cook:-
Turkey
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Carrots
Broccoli
Red cabbage
Cauliflower cheese
Sprouts with bacon
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
And Yorkshire puddings for the kids!

pollymere · 30/12/2023 21:44

We didn't have all the trimmings this year but did have sprouts, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings (optional), roast potatoes and a boiled bacon. I'd expect some or all of the following too: stuffing, carrots, parsnips, cranberry sauce, bread sauce, gravy, cabbage.

pollymere · 30/12/2023 21:45

Oh and cauliflower cheese... 😋

Banana34 · 30/12/2023 21:48

Our list would be:

Turkey
Stuffing
Stuffing balls
roast potatoes
mash potatoes
cauliflower cheese
broccoli cheese
pigs in blankets
roast parsnips
carrots
sprouts
red cabbage

Then gravy (Instant and fresh turkey) and whatever sauces people wanted - apple, cranberry, mint…

threatmatrix · 30/12/2023 21:56

Pigs in blankets, parsnips, Yorkshire pudding cauliflower / broccoli cheese, chestnut stuffing, chestnuts in gravy , 3 meats, bread sauce, cranbury sauce. Rich jus, champagne, glazed carrots, copious roasties in goose fat, I don’t understand mash as my father always told me it was a filler or those who couldn’t afford meat. Starters of oysters, lobsters, prawns and smoked salmon.

Lianne1977 · 30/12/2023 21:58

Yorkshire puddings should be with any “roast dinner” it’s the law! 😂

Ladymeade · 30/12/2023 22:13

Loads of different veg and pigs in blankets (although doing it all is a massive ball ache) so we went and bought the M&S veg selection

Topsyturveymam · 30/12/2023 22:15

In addition to the turkey/ nut toast …

  • mash
  • steamed potatoes
  • roasties
  • carrots
  • celeriac
  • sprouts
  • peas
  • parsnips
  • red cabbage
  • brocolli
  • cauliflower cheese
  • stuffing
  • Pigs in blankets
  • sauces (bread, cranberry, gravy)

Have a lot of veg but 2 vegetarians sitting.

Gowlett · 30/12/2023 22:16

Turkey & baked ham, with…

Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Carrots
Brussels sprouts
Parsnips
Stuffing
Marrowfat peas
Cranberry sauce
Gravy
Mustard

Gowlett · 30/12/2023 22:17

And asparagus

Ilovecleaning · 30/12/2023 22:25

For those who dislike the expression ‘all the trimmings’, how do you feel about the expression ‘guzzwiths’?
I knew a woman many, many years ago when I was in my teens who thought she was so funny when she described accompaniments as guzzwiths - because gravy goes with beef, stuffing goes with chicken etc. I hated her. I wanted to bloody kill her!! 🤣

Missingpop · 30/12/2023 22:34

For Christmas dinner I keep it very simple you eat enough crap over the festive season so mine is:-
Turkey
sausage meat sage & onion stuffing made into balls.
Oinkers in bacon
Crisp & crunchy roast tatties cooked in goose fat.
Bread sauce
Brussel sproups
thyme roasted carrots
honey glazed parsndip
broccoli
lashings of think turkey gravy

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 30/12/2023 22:35

@Ilovecleaning looking at all the different replies in really glad I did ask and will be letting everyone know exactly what is on the menu next time we host, so no one is disappointed as everyone has different views of what makes ‘all the trimmings’.

Blackalice · 30/12/2023 23:16

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 30/12/2023 23:18

Pigs in blankets ( full size sausages) roast potatoes, mash, roasted parsnips. Cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, carrots, Brussels fried with pancetta, broccoli and baby corn. Yorkshire puddings, gravy, stuffing balls and bread sauce.

we had roasted rib of beef and roast turkey. So also cranberry sauce and horseradish was available
