What are ‘all the trimmings’?

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

More than one type of potato?
Who has more than roast potatoes?
Why?

Agreed. Completely baffles me. Unless the roast potatoes aren't that good? Badly cooked roasties are a bit grim.

Amana · 29/12/2023 18:54

Stuffing - at least 2
Roast potatoes
Mash
Yorkshire puddings
Roasted carrots and parsnips
Braised red cabbage
Sprouts with bacon and chestnuts
Cauliflower cheese
‘Fried’ leeks
Home made gravy ( frozen beforehand) - Chicken wings, smoked bacon lardon, sweet potato & other root veg, stock, roast garlic, safe, rosemary
Homemade cranberry sauce - with port and orange juice.
Pigs in blankets
Sausage meat balls

We don't have Turkey tho, this year two large chickens and a roast leg of lamb

I think I’ve just had one of those brain exploding moments!

I always thought people put out a large horseradish sauce with Xmas dinner!!

It must be BREAD SAUCE! And I had no idea!!! 😂

I never tried it, as I always have cranberry. But it looks exactly the same!

I am going to buy some tomorrow!

Don’t buy it! Make it! Use good quality bread and cloves. Consistency is everything, not runny but not too stodgy. DH is a master, I wouldn’t eat it before I knew him.

timtam23 · 29/12/2023 18:55

Vegetarian Xmas main here but we still like some "trimmings". We had:
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Peas
Braised red cabbage
Mashed swede
Apricot & chestnut stuffing (home made so there was a huge amount of this)
Veggie gravy

BIossomtoes · 29/12/2023 18:55

I really don’t understand why anyone eats bread sauce.

Because it’s the food of the gods. If it tastes like bread and milk you’re not making it right.

JustAnotherManicMomday · 29/12/2023 18:55

I dis Turkey, beef, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, Cauliflower, 🥦, 🥕, Cabbage, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, bread sauce, honey glazed Parsnips, stuffing, gravy, Cranberry sauce

venusandmars · 29/12/2023 18:56

The 'trimmings' must include:

  • sprouts
  • roast potatoes
  • parsnips (in some form)
  • sausages wrapped in bacon ('kilted sausages' in our house)
  • cranberry sauce
  • stuffing
  • gravy

Then other things can be added - carrots, peas, other kinds of potato, yorkshire pudding...

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/12/2023 18:56

With Turkey:

Mash potatoes
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Stuffing balls
PIB
Sprouts
Carrots
Peas
Red cabbage
Cranberry sauce
Gravy

We also had beef this year so also Yorkshires, mustard and horseradish

I normally do a veggie main for myself with the non-meat trimmings and gravy .

Itslegitimatesalvage · 29/12/2023 18:57

We had turkey, ham, haggis, dauphinois potato, mashed potato, roast potato, pigs n blankets (and pigs without blankets), sprouts, carrots, parsnips, peas, broccoli, butternut squash, black pudding stuffing, chestnut stuffing, black eyed pea casserole and wilted greens. Various gravies, whisky sauce and redcurrant jelly.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/12/2023 18:59

I normally include chestnuts as part of my veggie main course .

SadCelticBunny · 29/12/2023 19:00

We had
Red Wine and Mushroom En Croute
Nut Roast

Roast potatoes
Celeriac and Potato mash
Roasted carrots and parsnips
Mushy peas
Frozen peas
Cauliflower Cheese
Stir fried Brussels sprouts and chestnuts
Brussels sprouts
Leeks in white sauce
Red Cabbage
Yorkshire puddings
Lashings of homemade Gravy
Cranberry Sauce
Apple sauce
Horseradish sauce

It was wonderful and we had Fry Up for the next two days.

We are having something similar on Sunday on a smaller scale!

I have only been out for Christmas lunch once, it was not that good!

Partyatno10 · 29/12/2023 19:00

Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Roast potatoes
Roasted carrots and parsnips
cabbage and Sprouts with bacon
peas and broccoli
Yorkshire puddings
Gravy and sauce - mint, cranberry, etc

Autumn1990 · 29/12/2023 19:00

Gravy, cranberry sauce, bread sauce, 2 types of potatoes, 2 types of stuffing, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, sprouts, carrots and parsnips. Other types of veg can be added as can veggie options.

Wintersgirl · 29/12/2023 19:01

We had:

Pigs in blankets
18th century chestnut stuffing (really yummy!)
Parsnips in honey and wholegrain mustard
Carrots marinated in orange and whisky, finished with chopped parsley
Brussel sprouts and bacon
Roast potatoes cooked with goose fat
We also have luxury mini stuffing parcels from Tesco finest
Cranberry & Port sauce
Bread Sauce.
Gravy
We don't have Yorkshire puddings at Christmas.

NotSorry · 29/12/2023 19:02

RebelMoon · 29/12/2023 17:39

Roast potatoes, roast carrots, roast parsnips, stuffing, sprouts, pigs in blankets, gravy.

I don't see the point of more than one type of potato, certainly not croquettes! Can't abide cranberry sauce (aka jam), don't like any sort of fruity accompaniment with meat. Yorkshire puddings belong with beef in my opinion.

You must have been at my house on Christmas day as we had exactly that plus brocolli - 👋at one of my children

Noseybookworm · 29/12/2023 19:03

We had:
Turkey
2 kinds of stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings
Cranberry sauce
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Carrots
Mashed swede
Brussels sprouts
Red cabbage
Cauliflower cheese
Gravy
Vegan turkey roast and vegan stuffing balls/pigs in blankets

Had no room for pudding!

Roasties and possibly mash
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Veggies (to include parsnips and sprouts)
Cranberry sauce

Yorkshire puddings have no place on a Christmas Dinner 😁

Wonderfulstuff · 29/12/2023 19:06

This year we (9 people) had
Turkey
Roast spuds
Roast parsnips (I consider it a parental win that DC6 thinks these are roast dinner chips!)
At least 4 types of steamed veg
3 types of stuffing
2 types of pigs in blankets
Chipolatas
All the sauces
And probably other stuff I've forgotten. It's a collective effort and the table was heaving and none of us would have been satisfied if it wasn't.

NB - If some of the Irish family had been with us we'd have had at least 1 more type of potato

somethingisnotquiteright · 29/12/2023 19:09

Silverbirchtwo · 29/12/2023 17:01

Roast potatoes, new potatoes, Peas, Carrots, brussels, Chestnut stuffing, sage and onion stuffing (sometimes), cranberry sauce, bread sauce, gravy, maybe another veg or two.

Edited

Peas!? On a Christmas dinner!?

Ours was a sad affair. My in laws tried to put sweetcorn on mine..I politely declined. But there was no cauli cheese, no broccoli, only one cocktail sausage sized pig in blanket each, 2 tiny roast carrots each, translucent 'roast' potatoes and the most watery gravy you ever did see..😢

I'm cooking next year..

Lemon1111 · 29/12/2023 19:10

We had turkey, Ham, sausage meat stuffing, roast potatoes, pigs and blankets, celeriac and carrot mash, roasted parsnips and carrots, sprouts, gravy, bread sauce and cranberry sauce. I usually do a cauliflower cheese or cheesy leek/ gratin type thing but couldn’t be bothered this year as we had ham as extra

Cmonluv · 29/12/2023 19:10

We had roast rib of beef for. Xmas dinner because we'd not had one in years, it's unjustifiably expensive usually but for Xmas dinner for us and the pil it was no more expensive than turkey.

The kids just had trimmings as they don't like roast meat of any kind.

So we had beef
Yorkshire puddinga
Mash
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Sprouts
Chipolatas (as the kids like them but don't like pigs in blankets and this was their protein source)
And gravy

The kids didnt like the Yorkshire puddings or roast potatoes but had everything else on a Christmas picky plate and were delighted.

Hesma · 29/12/2023 19:11

Pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, stuffing, carrots, sprouts. Cranberry sauce, gravy

Karrak · 29/12/2023 19:11

Cyllie33 · 29/12/2023 18:49

This exactly @FairisleFairy

For Christmas it’s

stuffing
pigs in blankets
roast potatoes
bread sauce
cranberry sauce
gravy
carrots and parsnips

Nevermind your Yorkshire’s and mash! Those are delish but for other meals!

100% I agree. And with your 'sprouts obviously' afterthought. This is what Christmas dinner is about in the context of the season and the solstice. Root vegetables are key, I would only add chestnuts which were and are available this late in the season.

Peas, cauliflower cheese and broccoli - not traditional. Strictly, neither are potatoes, but these have now become so with everything.

Growlybear83 · 29/12/2023 19:12

I always serve roast potatoes (for everyone but me as I hate them), roast parsnips, sausagemeat, pigs in blankets, gammon, two different stuffings, sprouts with pancetta, carrots, cauliflower cheese, sweetcorn, bread sauce, gravy, and cranberry sauce. I have to do two lots of gravy and sprouts because my daughter is a Muslim, and I also do her a halal version of pigs in blankets using beef bacon and sausages.
