What are ‘all the trimmings’?

HurricaneZeldaAndToto · 29/12/2023 16:56

After a slightly disappointing Christmas dinner at a relative’s house, I wondered if my idea of ‘all the trimmings’ was massively out of whack with the rest of the world?

If you did turkey dinner ‘with all the trimmings’ what did you serve?

AIBU to suspect this means very different things to different people?

I do love them. I stuff them with goats cheese and give them a bit of maple syrup. Decadent and they don't last!

underneaththeash · 29/12/2023 18:38

We had sprouts with bacon and chestnuts,
Roast potatoes in goose fat, duchesse potatoes
Carrots,
Parsnips with honey
Stuffing
gravy,
yorkshire puddings
bread sauce
cranberry sauce
pigs in blankets

Tryingtomoveforward · 29/12/2023 18:38

Definitely not Yorkshire puddings with turkey - that would be a crime in our house.
We had roast potatoes, stuffing, pigs in blankets, sprouts, carrots, broccoli, parsnips, gravy, bread sauce and cranberry sauce.

Bellyblueboy · 29/12/2023 18:38

The trimmings are I think additional to the Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and roast potatoes?

this year I cooked and we had stuffing, honey roast parsnips, honey roast carrots, Brussels sprouts with chestnuts, cauliflower cheese, cranberries, cranberry sauce and of course gravy

and of course pigs in blankets!!!!!

Zamazenta · 29/12/2023 18:38

Our "trimmings" were
Roast Potatoes
Porkand herb stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Sprouts
Broccoli
Carrots
Cauliflower cheese
Mashed swede
Turkey Gravy
Cranberry sauce no-one ate 😂

Hopingforno2in2024 · 29/12/2023 18:40

For me bare minimum is:

pigs in blankets
stuffing
roast potatoes
red cabbage
brussel sprouts
yorkshires
cranberry sauce
roast parsnips
gravy

Mmmm19 · 29/12/2023 18:41

  • Yorkshire puddings

  • sprouts
  • red cabbage (delia recipe)

Definitely adding dates in bacon next year!! Might also chuck in a butternut squash..

Prunes in bacon are much nicer. Dates are too sweet.

theweewestie · 29/12/2023 18:45

We had

Turkey
Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Carrots
Broccoli
Sweetcorn
Cauliflower cheese
Yorkshire puddings
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Sprouts (well, one of us did)

I confess to never having tried bread sauce. What does it taste like?

Karrak · 29/12/2023 18:46

If chestnuts are not a side dish with a Christmas Day turkey, then I am a bit disappointed. Chestnuts are traditional and seasonal. They go well with the meat and a cranberry sauce. Plus some of the other meat trimmings. Pork and chestnut served together are a grand combination.

I will probably be the only one to say this, but with turkey the perfect wine is an unoaked Chardonnay.

If someone says to me 'Oh ABC' then I know they know little about wine and nothing about flavour pairing. Chardonnay is a perfect match to turkey with its honeyed tones and sweet nutty flavour. It needs to be a good make and the bottle left in the fridge unmoved for at least a week.

Notimeforaname · 29/12/2023 16:58

Mash, croquettes, sometimes roasties, broccoli, stuffing, carrots/other veg, gravy, sometimes Yorkshire puddings.

Mash. No.

Fartooold · 29/12/2023 18:47

The trimmings are the extras, so meat, veg and gravy are the norm.
Extras are pigs in blankets, stuffing, yorkies ( although these are ALWAYS the norm in my house), bread sauce etc., Its what sorts Sunday lunch from Christmas lunch 😁

enchantedsquirrelwood · 29/12/2023 18:47

We usually do turkey with gravy, roast potatoes, veg including carrots and sprouts, and pigs in blankets. Also stuffing and cranberry sauce.

theweewestie · 29/12/2023 18:47

Oh, and stuffing

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/12/2023 18:47

I always think of a Turkey dressed up in lace and ribbons. They’re trimmings too

Alaperchoine · 29/12/2023 18:48

We had..
Turkey
Roast potatoes
Carrot and sweade mash
Sausagemeat stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Braised red cabbage with apples
Cauliflower cheese
Carrots
Broccoli
Peas and green beans in mint butter

maybein2022 · 29/12/2023 18:48

We had turkey with:

roast potatoes
roast parsnips
pigs in blankets
stuffing balls
Yorkshire puddings
red cabbage
cauliflower cheese
peas
carrots
broccoli
bread sauce
cranberry sauce
gravy

Tbh we didn’t need to do so many extras! But was very nice.

Threewheeler1 · 29/12/2023 18:48

Gravy, cutlery, plates, a paper hat and a nice serviette.
Tada! All the trimmings...

Actually, I'm feeling a bit inadequate now 😶😬

Cyllie33 · 29/12/2023 18:49

This exactly @FairisleFairy

For Christmas it’s

stuffing
pigs in blankets
roast potatoes
bread sauce
cranberry sauce
gravy
carrots and parsnips

Nevermind your Yorkshire’s and mash! Those are delish but for other meals!

Cyllie33 · 29/12/2023 18:49

Oh and sprouts obvs!

crazyaginglady · 29/12/2023 18:50

Pigs in blankets
stuffing
roast potatoes
mashed swede
red cabbage
cauliflower cheese
sprouts
carrots and parsnips
gravy
cranberry sauce
bread sauce

I ditched cabbage and swede this year as there weren’t that many of us.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 29/12/2023 18:51

I served roast potatoes, gravy, stuffing, sprouts with bacon, honey mustard parsnips, garlicky carrots, steamed broccoli, Yorkshire puddings and cranberry sauce. That was for four adults alongside a turkey crown. I definitely think you need 3-4 different veg and a couple extra sides as well. I know some people like pigs in blankets, but I’m not a massive fan.

Meowandthen · 29/12/2023 18:51

I really don’t understand why anyone eats bread sauce.

I’ll make it if enough people want it and apparently my version good but to me it just tastes like soggy bread in milk. That’s what it is really but the milk is flavoured and the sauce seasoned.

Mind you, it was only a few years ago that I discovered people had things like mashed potatoes and Yorkshire puddings with their turkey. My husband is from Yorkshire and even he thinks the puddings should only go with beef.

SharonEllis · 29/12/2023 18:52

Our 'trimmings' are quite modest but we buy really good quality. We have roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, plus steamed sprouts. Turkey has sausagemeat stuffing plus we have homemade cranberry sauce & giblet gravy. Keep it simple - the food will be better than if you over complicate it!
