Chest X Ray

I have had a cough now for 6 weeks, I don't cough much 2-3 times a day but when I do it sounds very wet. I also have phlegm stuck at the back of my throat and feel breathless.
I made a GP appointment yesterday and he checked my oxygen levels which were fine and listened to my chest which was clear.
He then told me that it was probably just a long lasting cold and some can last for up to 12 weeks.
He then referred me for a chest x ray. Is this normal if my chest sounded clear?

Not every problem in your chest would have auscultating findings, so he's probably being extra safe (depending on age, family/medical history and smoker's status) and sending you for an xray for a chronic cough, but reassusred you saying he thinks it's nothing.
