To cancel on them again..

I've been trying to meet up with old workmates for a meal. I cancelled last time just before Christmas as DD was unwell so we arranged for tonight.

DD has been away with her dad since Tuesday and is back tonight so it means I won't see her until morning, I'm full of cold myself and I'm exhausted. My car is broken meaning I'll have to get a lift there and back. But I don't know if I can cancel on them again.

What would you do? Shall I just go?

Of course you can cancel, there is no "have to go" about it. If I were the other person though, I wouldn't rearrange. I guess it depends whether you want to see them or not.

It’s really rude to cancel at such short notice - all the reasons you’ve given you’d have known about for a little while so just sounds like you can’t be bothered at the last minute. Which is fine, but expect those you’re meeting to know that too.

ilovesooty · 29/12/2023 14:08

Of course you can cancel if you want, but don't expect them to be in a hurry to make any further arrangements with you.

Rumplestiltz · 29/12/2023 14:08

Of course you can cancel but you are making it clear to them you can’t really be arsed so if I was them I wouldn’t bother with you again. If you are happy with that outcome, cancel.

How many are going and will they still meet if you don't go?

Peoplemakemedespair · 29/12/2023 14:10

I’d just go op. You can’t keep letting them down, and your reasons are just inconveniences really. It’s only a meal, it’s not like you have to stay out most of the evening

BliniLover · 29/12/2023 14:11

If I was your pals I would not think the DD excuse and the car excuse were very good tbh. The cold might be a good reason and it might not. Are you coughing occasionally with a runny nose/mild headache/sore throat? Or are you coughing continuously and/or unable to really hold a conversation?!
It also depends if you are often flaky or if cancelling is completely unprecedented for you.

theduchessofspork · 29/12/2023 14:11

If you want to maintain a relationship with them, then go - however if you have a cold you could give them the option.

If they are meeting as a group it is fine, as you are just one amongst many.

TBH I'd rather you cancelled than turned up to spread your virus!

I wouldn't mind if you cancelled me twice, life happens like this sometimes.
