Sick note question

user1299918 · 28/12/2023 20:22

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question but i have never needed a sick note before.
I have not been feeling well for the past month had a bad cough but the last week I have had more symptoms - sore throat, tiredness, breathless and haven't been able to work.
I am going to make a GP appointment tomorrow as I am getting worried about the cough now and also because I feel unwell with it.
I don't see myself been well enough for work so will need a sick note, do I just ask my GP for one? I feel silly having a sick note for a cold.

Yes, just explain that you don’t feel well enough to work at the moment and could you possibly have a note. You can then send a copy in to work (we just photograph and email them in). The sick note is your property so don’t feel obliged to send in the original. The GP will generally decide how long to sign you off for.

Yes, you just ask for it. And you keep the original, only provide a copy to your employer (it says this on the form).

Have you already phoned in sick for a few days? You can self certify for 7 days and then after that you need a Fit Note.

@Lougle my 7 days will run out on Tuesday

So yes, you can go to the doctor tomorrow and they might either offer to write you a fit note then, or to call you on Monday and have one ready for you for Tuesday.

You do just ask GP for one, but they can say no if they deem you are fit to work, or they could say you are fit to work following certain advice. It’s not a guarantee that just asking for one will get you one.
