Someone at work hates me

Lighthearted though curious

Our secret Santa at work this year was to write your name and add some likes and dislikes on the piece of paper.

I got a candle, which I specified in my dislikes. They hate me don’t they?
Wonder who it was though!

Could they possibly have misread? (reaching!!)

estd1869 · 28/12/2023 15:19

or they simply didn’t bother to read it.

estd1869 · 28/12/2023 15:21

or perhaps that was the “joke”?!

widowtwankywashroom · 28/12/2023 15:21

They probably mis read it, or though there was something about candles, its a secret santa for gods sake, stop being dramatic

OP literally said it was a lighthearted thread. The only dramatics here are oozing from you.

I strongly suspect that they either didn't read or remember the list that well.
Then had produce a gift and remembered candle.

If we tell our brain don't think of candles, they will be the first thing we think of. It is just how they work.

BlazingWorld · 28/12/2023 15:24

They will have misread it. I can’t count the times when I have sent emails saying something like “I am available for a meeting any time apart from midday Thursday and two pm Friday” and get a reply saying “Midday Thursday will be great, let’s meet then”. People will have read , or remembered it as, “blah blah blah candles”.

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2023 15:25

They probably just had a (re) gift drawer and you got something from that. I'm fascinated by the range of presents you could have in your gift drawer and for how long for it to be worthwhile having one.

squashi · 28/12/2023 15:31

Whilst I'm sure PP are right about the misreading, it's intriguing to think that someone at work hates you and is letting you know via a candle. There's some sort of short story in that.

hidinginthegarden · 28/12/2023 15:38

This happened to me a few years ago. Specifically said I hate Yankee candles and was given the biggest size. It was deliberate by my boss at the time (!) who thought it was really funny. Saying that, his wife also made sure he bought a really lovely Christmas lantern to go with it. And that comes out every year and I smile at the memory and wonder what he's doing now (we didn't keep in touch!).

Atethehalloweenchocs · 28/12/2023 15:38

Its the same phenomenon as with hairdressers when they do the thing you tell them you dont want them to do.

meganorks · 28/12/2023 15:42

More than likely someone hates you. But it might be that someone picked the list, read it quickly, then forgot about entirely and lost the list. They then had a last minute panic the night before, remembered it said candle and grabbed that. (I am envisaging a bloke doing this, but might not be)

LlynTegid · 28/12/2023 15:43

Not everyone has the same sense of humour. Some people even think Mrs Brown's Boys is funny.

TripleDaisySummer · 28/12/2023 15:48

I was thinking making meeting arrangements when you say anytime but ...
and the but is when they make the appointment - had with with speech and writing so in end learnt not to be so flexible.

Grimpo · 28/12/2023 16:01

The giver was probably just being lazy and didn't bother to look at the list.

Bitchassmosquito · 28/12/2023 16:31

Its more likely they were just to lazy/careless to read the dislike list properly (or at all).

Milkand2sugarsplease · 28/12/2023 16:37

They had a candle already earmarked for the or SS gift as they received it last year and also don't like them...😂

Thriving30 · 28/12/2023 16:52

Sounds like they bought the gift beforehand and didn't want to purchase a different one

Heatherjayne1972 · 28/12/2023 16:54

It’ll be a regifting type situation
