I was really taken in by the thread about 'cut by words from a friend', well at first I was but as it went on it seemed a bit ridiculous! I've never reached out to anyone but I did to her, I even pm'd her as I was concerned. Its now been deleted.
AIBU to think that it's pointless reaching out to some posters who come across as desperate or is it part and parcel on these threads?

The problem is you never really know who is behind the screen, it might be a legitimate and authentic poster who is genuinely in need or it might be someone who is making it up for attention or is just bored. MN don’t always get it right with the threads they zap but there are sometimes hints if the OP isn’t engaging with any questions or keeps piling on more ridiculous details. I think it’s best to show empathy but not get too sucked in.

I’ve been here for over 10yrs and have never felt the need to private message anyone. If you ever find yourself getting emotionally invested in a thread, best just set your phone down.
