walked in on my swedish au pair in my bedroom yesterday going through my handbag. she said she was looking for keys to the food cupboard...but the key for that is not in my handbag and i'm sure she would know this. she has been working for us for 6 months so far and all has been good, the dc's love her. this is the first time anything like this has happened. should i fire her? dh thinks i shouldn't.

I had to sack my ap recently, she got the day to pack, and was out the same evening.

3NAB · 16/03/2008 18:43

I agree, she should go tmw.

expatinscotland · 16/03/2008 18:45

tbh, if she was in your handbag, i wouldn't want to keep her round another week in case she nicks your stuff.

3NAB · 16/03/2008 18:47

What has she got to lose once she knows she is going?

Rosbo · 16/03/2008 18:48

I don't trust her round the kids really now
but who else is there to look after them?

can an agy provide short term cover until you recruit? would you consider nursery?

QuintessentialShadows · 16/03/2008 18:49

You or your dh, or another back up plan till you find a replacement.

A pain, but there you go.

Rosbo · 16/03/2008 19:14

True true, thanks for all your help everyone

She might have been just nosey. I've had a sneaky peak in various friends' handbags over the years. I don't want to give the impression that this is something I do regularly!, and in fact, I can't think of any specific occassion now, but I know I have looked into another woman's bag, with no intention of stealing anything!

When it comes to being nosey though, I'm busted. Sorry.

scottishmummy · 16/03/2008 19:33

you furtle about in other women's hanbag?.eugh god do you stroke about in their underwear drawer when visiting.gross

expatinscotland · 16/03/2008 20:04

There's being nosey and violating someone's privacy. Personally, if I caught my so-called friend rifling through my bag, well, let's just say I'd cut her a wide berth.

If I were that curious, well, I'd ask my friend what she had in her bag rather than riffle through her personal stuff.

Not that I'd be that curious.

MadameCh0let · 16/03/2008 20:11

Jeez!! Luckily my friends are more laid back than to cut me dead for being nosey.

It's not something I've done for maybe ten years, but I'm sure I have done it in the past, that's all I'm saying! And no, I've no interest in underwear, unless it's still in the shop.

So if you're babysitting for a friend, and she has a row of cards on her fireplace, doyou not read the messages??

yooooz are lyin'.

messagedeleted · 16/03/2008 20:16

ooh i am nosy
i dont see ti as sucha big deal
when i was an au pair i used to haev a good rootle whent hey went away

expatinscotland · 16/03/2008 20:16

that's not the same thing.

teh contents of one's bag isn't displayed on the mantelpiece in the living room.

no, i really don't have interest in digging into my friend's personal stuff unless she asks me to go get something out of there for her.

because i respect my friend's privacy and stuff more than my 'curiosity'.

scottishmummy · 16/03/2008 20:17

have a word with yourself!you admit rumamging in other folk handbags.that is total bampot, heidbanger, nosy cow behaviour. No excuses

SSSandy2 · 16/03/2008 20:17

I would fire her for that and I would not keep someone I had fired working unsupervised in my house for a week, in particular if I suspected her of being dishonest. I mean that's asking for trouble really.

Did you find her via an agency? If so, call them ?

chelsygirl · 16/03/2008 20:19

this thread is a wind up folks!

spicemonster · 16/03/2008 20:19

I would never, ever look in another woman's handbag! My mum sometimes asks me to get her phone out if it beeps and I always find it really embarrassing - it's so private to me - even worse than going through a knicker drawer.

But I would look at cards on the mantlepiece - not remotely the same thing. One are on display, inviting examination, the other is a personal possession.

Quattrocento · 16/03/2008 20:25

Run that past me again

Keys to the food cupboard?

Rosbo, is your family living in a university halls of residence?

Do you have separate milk bottles in the fridge?

With a piece of mouldy cheddar?

MadameCh0let · 16/03/2008 20:27

Did I make excuses for myself?!

Yeah I'm nosy! But if the OP's au pair's wORST character attribute is being nosey, then she could be a really good au pair.

The first au pair did not nose about in your handbag, but slep with your husband, is that right? Or was that bit a freaking joke?! Jeez, if my au pairs had variously, slept with my husband, had a peak in my handbag, I think I'd have a little less revulsion towards the one who peaked in my handbag.

By the way, because now I know it is considered socially unacceptable, I would never do it! But I'm pushing forty now. If a twenty year old did it, I'd think less of it.

expatinscotland · 16/03/2008 20:28

I actually do know a lady who lives in a home where there are keys to the cupboards and fridge.

One of their children has Prader-Wili Syndrome, however.

GermaineSneer · 16/03/2008 20:30

GOD FOLKS I ROOTLED and nosied.
iwas the nosiest au pari int he land

expatinscotland · 16/03/2008 20:35

Well, I know you were, Germaine!

But you certainly wouldn't go through a pal's handbag whilst sober, no?

GermaineSneer · 16/03/2008 20:37

not unless i needed a pen or somehting or ehtir phone was going

Rosbo · 16/03/2008 20:56

Excuse me chelsygirl, who the hell do you think you are?!
