To want Christmas to be over after Boxing Day

Butterflyfluff · 26/12/2023 16:16

Just that really.

Yes, I put my tree up early because for me, it’s the run up to Christmas I love - after Boxing Day I feel Christmas is over and want the decorations down.

I get the religious aspect of the 12 days of Christmas but that’s not for me.

Just interested in what the split is nowadays.

YANBU - Christmas is over by 26th December

YABU - Christmas starts on 25th December

The best part of xmas, for me, is between Xmas day and nye. Nothing to do, nothing to stress about. PJ s only on boxing day, eating leftovers. The other days are simply lazy do as you wish days.

I wish! It's over for me, 2 days off work and back in tomorrow
Feels like a normal weekend TBH
Dreading the hundreds of emails and how busy it will be

How come? Do you not have to go to work?

UnimaginableWindBird · 26/12/2023 21:26

For most of my adult life, I've worked in jobs where the run-up to Christmas is one of the busiest and most stressful times of the year, so going back to work afterwards still feels a lot calmer than the rest of December.

I know Epiphany isn't really celebrated in the UK, which I think is a shame. It's nice to have little activities to do throughout the 12 days of Christmas and a special festive day at the end as well as the start.

I don't object to other people taking their decorations down, but it annoys me when they talk about it terms of being clean and tidy and fresh, which makes me feel like I'm being judged as dirty and messy and lazy for following my family's tradition.

Grapewrath · 26/12/2023 21:26

I dint mind the run up but find it stressful. I love Boxing Day and beyond but no, it doesn’t feel Christmassey it just feels balancing and restorative.
Nothing better than taking the tree down and having a good clean. It doesn’t have to be a negative though- I’m always feeling really grateful for a successful festive season and memories made

I've never heard of anyone in real life putting their tree up on 24th December

I didn't quite do this but nearly. The tree was up in some fashion by 19th, but barely decorated. No other decorations.

I did most of the decorating on 24th. Didn't feel very Christmassy doing it. Every year I mean to start earlier but just so busy.

Tumbleweed101 · 26/12/2023 21:35

I love the Christmas week for just being home and relaxing as my work place is closed so I don't need to worry about having to cover others. I like the decorations down before I go back to work though as back to the grind again then.

My relatives do.

user1471453601 · 26/12/2023 21:38

Ahh @daisypond work, I remember it well. I tried it for 40 years, didn't like it, so stopped. Daughter still has to do it, but her office closes down between Xmas and new year. Her partner is retired too. So we just all sit around between Xmas and nye.

I'd feel a tad guilty, if I hadn't put in my 49 years😀. But I have.

Neither of the options you've set up for us to vote on works for me.

I LOVE advent.
I love going to services, concerts, nativities. I love parties. I like "this is the last meeting before Christmas, lets bring some nibbles and socialise a bit". I love carol singing. I like seeing Christmas lights. I love going to things that are Christmassy (eg we go and listen to a brass band playing carols and Christmas songs in a pub near here).
So Christmas certainly doesn't 'start' on 25th.

BUT
I really love this time between Christmas and NY, when everyone relaxes a bit. We meet up with family we didn't see on Christmas day. I catch up on the TV I've missed. Boxing Day is for sporting events and going to 'watch the match' . We usually spend one day going out for a day's walking. I get to spend time with dc home from University. It's just a lovely, relaxed time when you can appreciate the presents you've had and enjoy seeing the decorations and cards whilst having a week off - not just from work, but all commitments that stop over Christmas.

Eggsley · 26/12/2023 21:46

Our decorations go up 1st December or thereabouts, and I take them down the weekend closest to 6th. My office is closed between Christmas and new year so it's a really lovely break and it does feel festive to me. I like coming home after work in the first week of January and the tree and lights still being up. The run up to Christmas is always really busy at work so it's good to have some time afterwards to enjoy being at home.

MissingMoominMamma · 26/12/2023 21:49

I worked until the 23rd- both day and evenings. I’m looking forward to a few days just having long dog walks, followed by snuggling down with DH, watching films in the sitting room full of twinkly lights. I only put the tree up on Christmas Eve though.

User69371527 · 26/12/2023 22:45

I’m middle ground, 6th Jan feels too late, Boxing Day too early. And I like having the Xmas lights up for New Year’s Eve so for me it’s New Year’s Day everything comes down

Bloom15 · 26/12/2023 22:56

YABU

As an adult I don't really get excited for the build up. But I love Christmas. Seeing how happy my son has and spending time with him and DH.

I always have time off between Christmas and New Year. Love relaxing and having lie ins

We start late as husband likes to have his birthday out the way before tree goes up so all still a novelty for us. Wedding anniversary on 28th and always have a few days away between Boxing Day and NYE - all our small family off to holiday house in borders tomorrow. Family birthday NYE and not back to work til 8th so for me at least just getting started

That sounds lovely

BlackAldi · 26/12/2023 23:22

It’s a free country and you can do what sparks your joy (The birth of Christ is a season for joy!).

Tree came in on 22 Dec, would like up keep it up until candlemas (2 Feb) but it might need to go back in the garden earlier to survive!

Me!

We spent a lot if time in Europe.

Here, putting the tree up is a family event, when the DC’s arrive home, in-laws and my family arrive. A lively festive thing to do together.

‘When do you put your Christmas tree up?Traditionally the Christmas Tree is only put up on Christmas Eve, occasionally it became another “gift” to give to the children. Either in an event for the family to decorate together, or for the parents to assemble and place all the presents underneath, to surprise the children with’

We always decorate the tree on Christmas Eve. It's great for keeping the DC busy.

I would love to keep it up until Candlemas but DH would not! Twelfth Night for us.

MyDogsPaws · 27/12/2023 12:45

I hate having the Christmas tree up after Christmas, I’m itching to get it down but the dc would protest. They are going to their dads tomorrow until new year so I’ll get them all down and have the house back to normal for new year! I know people find it nice and cosy to have the tree lights etc but prefer the tree to be away and just have some nice cosy candles etc in the evening. Last year I left some fairy lights up around my fire place until spring which was nice but nothing Christmassy!
