To want Christmas to be over after Boxing Day

Butterflyfluff · 26/12/2023 16:16

Just that really.

Yes, I put my tree up early because for me, it’s the run up to Christmas I love - after Boxing Day I feel Christmas is over and want the decorations down.

I get the religious aspect of the 12 days of Christmas but that’s not for me.

Just interested in what the split is nowadays.

YANBU - Christmas is over by 26th December

YABU - Christmas starts on 25th December

For me Christmas is from around 9th/10th ish December until 1st January. I normally put my tree up then and start my nights out around the same time. I also see a lot of people in the in-between week, usually a night or two in a hotel and a couple of meals out and do something nice for New year too.
So for me the trick is not to start the festivities too early.

JustFrustrated · 26/12/2023 16:55

I would normally have mine down on the 28th, but as we're having a mini Xmas day on the 29th with a friend, they're staying up until NYE.

I must have them down by NYE in order to go into the new year happy.

And I love Christmas. I love my decorations. I love it all.

But I need a clean, tidy and clear house to function well.

Desecratedcoconut · 26/12/2023 16:58

Neither, I like the run up to Christmas - although I only put the tree up the first weekend in December - and I enjoy Christmas week.

The run up is enjoyable prep and events and this next week or so is catching up with all our friends and family and having guests to stay. The tree will go down after NYD.

ChilledToTheBone · 26/12/2023 16:59

Im the same. I love the build. We do a lot of lead up to xmas activities. But by this evening i am done, I want space without the tree, extended dining table etc to play their toys. After hosting 2 days I feel I want to clean and freshen everything. Ready to see NY in all fresh.

Dh said the same And s said about taking decs down when dcs are in bed. But I'll hold off until Thursday evening. As we're busy Thurs, Fri and week end. Plus NY day. Then dh goes back to work 2nd with dcs And it's way to much to do alone

Its what works for us.

CaineRaine · 26/12/2023 17:02

The older I get, the shorter I want Christmas to be. I look forward to my children getting older so I have less responsibilities for making it magic, doing all the activities in the run-up etc and distilling it down to fewer days.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 26/12/2023 17:03

I’m more of a third option…
Tree up 1st December.
Festive events throughout the month.
Christmas really begins when we break for the holidays - 20th this year.
Lots of catching up with family and friends, a few days away and NY celebrations.
Tree down the Saturday before back to school (6th this year).

JaninaDuszejko · 26/12/2023 17:04

Hate the run up, now is the good bit. Having family for Hogmanay and don't have work or school until the 8th. Love the relaxing first week of January. Tree has only been up a weekand will come down the 6th or 7th.

CurlewKate · 26/12/2023 17:04

I'm not remotely religious, but it's January 6th for me.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 26/12/2023 17:05

We have people coming tomorrow but as soon as they have left and the kids are asleep, the Dec's are coming down ready for my big annual pre nye clean/declutter. I personally cannot wait to get them down (apparently I'm a right grinch).

luxuria84 · 26/12/2023 17:10

Never understand why people want to gallop through their lives so fast..

Well for me, my birthday on NYD so I like to actually celebrate that than be surrounded by Xmas. I get enough unwanted Xmas gifts as presents anyway. I like the house to be deep cleaned in time for NYE and my birthday so I can relax and enjoy the day. I have always been the same, even as a kid.

MintyfreshSW · 26/12/2023 17:14

I love Christmas. Decorations now go up on the 25 November. Absolutely love both the run up and the week after Christmas. Genuinely upset when it’s all over and have to start focusing on fresh starts and spring flowers to distract myself.
I do Christmas really well though and really limit overly stressful commitments.

ClottedCreamScone · 26/12/2023 17:17

It’s ok for you to do what suits you.

I don’t personally celebrate all the way up to 12th night but I do keep the decorations etc up until about the 2nd of January. I like those slow, gentle days between Christmas and new year.

It definitely seems to be the trend now to put decorations up very early and then take them down as soon as Christmas Day is over. It’s not for me but can see why some people want a fresh start and everything nice and calm once the day is done.

Fundays12 · 26/12/2023 17:23

It ends for me before New year. I much prefer to have my tree down and house back to normal by the 1st January but really from tomorrow onwards we tend to go back to eating less junk and day to day life. I hate New year so I think that's part of it

VivaVivaa · 26/12/2023 17:27

I love the spell between Xmas and NYE. I find Xmas day far too much and I much prefer everything around it. I also like having the decorations up for New Year’s Eve. They don’t go up in our house until 1-2 weeks before Xmas so I’m not sick of them. Will take them down on the 1st/2nd I reckon.

stargirl1701 · 26/12/2023 17:27

Now is Christmas for me. The tree went up on Christmas Eve, the house is so clean and tidy, there's lots of lovely food and we're catching up with friends and family for the next fortnight. DH and I are off work and the DC are not at school.

Time to relax, read, play board games, complete jigsaws, watch films and walk the dog with no time pressure.

This is best part of the year for me. It's so calm.

RM2013 · 26/12/2023 17:34

I prefer the run up to Christmas. Personally never been a massive fan of Boxing Day but very grateful to have the time off with family. I’m back to work tomorrow. Tree will stay up until after New Year’s Day but I will definitely have had enough of it by then!

RuthW · 26/12/2023 17:48

Christmas is over when we go to bed on Christmas day. Back to work tomorrow and won't have time to take tree down until new year's day. Spent today clearing up.

Missingmyusername · 26/12/2023 17:51

I love the run up- the last week of November onwards! (When my tree and decs go up). I’m not a fan of the bit from 28th-30th Dec. 31st Dec we do another roast, have some games etc. 1st Jan my decs come down.

MumPod · 26/12/2023 17:57

I'm the same. I love the run up to Christmas but by Boxing Day I'm done 🤣 I'm already getting fidgety and wanting to take the decorations down. It also hasn't felt like Christmas this year. With one thing or another, it felt underwhelming and looking forward to the spring and warmer days.

WickedSerious · 26/12/2023 18:02

I start taking things down on the 2nd of January.but I don't do it all in one go because the house looks so bare and miserable.

Iwishiwasasilentnight · 26/12/2023 18:04

Rosebel · 26/12/2023 16:53

Really ends for me the weekend before school starts. We take the tree and decorations down and get prepared for school /work. We used to do it 12th Night but much easier this way.
I prefer the bit between Christmas and New Year. I feel too stressed before hand.

Me too. I love from 27th onwards. I’m looking forward to a lazy day in the house tomorrow.

x2boys · 26/12/2023 18:06

Ah I was waiting for. Tha,annual.,I'm taking all.my Decorations down on Boxing day and declarings Xmas over thread 😂
You do you ,I only put my decorations up.a few days ago so won't be taking them down u till after new year

mogsrus · 26/12/2023 18:09

Couldn’t wait to get back in to the cinema on Boxing Day, seriously busy, Christmas Day I’ve always found absolutely nothing

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 26/12/2023 18:17

In Scotland the Festive period continues through till Hogmanay and New Year's Day. 2nd January is last lazy day and then the new year gets started properly on the 3rd.

I find it depressing reading about (some English) people taking the tree down on Boxing Day. Probably the same people who put their trees up
In November
