To want Christmas to be over after Boxing Day

Butterflyfluff · 26/12/2023 16:16

Just that really.

Yes, I put my tree up early because for me, it’s the run up to Christmas I love - after Boxing Day I feel Christmas is over and want the decorations down.

I get the religious aspect of the 12 days of Christmas but that’s not for me.

Just interested in what the split is nowadays.

YANBU - Christmas is over by 26th December

YABU - Christmas starts on 25th December

You can't just relax and enjoy it when you're working though, which is what many people have said they enjoy doing.

Thanks @NoWordForFluffy - you said it better than me!

Darby3785 · 26/12/2023 20:35

My DM was at work today and she was worried about it all day yesterday
I'm at work tomorrow and it kind of over shadows boxing day! I'm going to do a tiny bit of sparkly make up tomorrow as its still the festive period.
Tomorrow evening we have festivities at my SILs and I'm going straight from work for it after 12 hours I'll be ready for a glass of fizz 😆
If people didn't start the run up to Christmas in September then we wouldn't be sick of it by the period itself!

pavillion1 · 26/12/2023 20:36

if we wasnt going away early tomorrow then id be taking mine down.

brawnthesheep · 26/12/2023 20:40

@NoWordForFluffy I've worked in retail and an office between Xmas

& new year and as I've said I still felt relaxed and festive as it's not like I was working a full week. But obviously enjoyment depends on your job and colleagues.

I know very few people who work full-time and get an extended Christmas break. Unless your workplace closes or you can use annual leave, it's business as usual for most once the Bank Holidays are over.

I'm talking statistics though not about people I know, I just don't think most people in the UK are working tomorrow, some? Yes but most? I think only about 25m people work full time in the first place.

getthemfromlidlme · 26/12/2023 20:40

I like the bit between Boxing Day and New Year's. Seems to be an overall feeling generally that less is expected of you and it's all very 'floaty'

Even those in office seem to say it's more of a just ' be there for emergencies' type of set up if you're in between now and January 2nd.

I like it.

Really, really, hate the mess afterwards. I don't host, and yet the packing away endless boxes and finding homes for things does my head in.

I don't like Christmas trees and decorations. They annoy me. I like routine and my usual surroundings. I lump it for everyone else but it's hard.

Got there between us. Xmas Grin

Heronwatcher · 26/12/2023 20:42

My kids didn’t even finish school until the 21st! And I love “twixtmas” when you’ve done all the drudge work and trips to annoying relatives and can just chill out, go for a walk, go on holiday etc. I’ve never understood people who put a tree up in late October and then get the whole lot down on boxing day- bloody January is long and miserable enough as it is!

brawnthesheep · 26/12/2023 20:44

@Heronwatcher same, it felt really late!

eatdrinkandbemerry · 26/12/2023 20:44

Mine will be taken down tomorrow and I didn't put them up until the 18th.
Autistic kids who have done absolutely amazing being out of routines but I'm going to give them some normality.
And i need the space to put the new toys that the tree is taking up 🤣

TammyJones · 26/12/2023 20:45

Saturday I cleaned the house from top to bottom
Sunday I sorted laundry and caught up with last minute jobs.
Monday (Christmas Day) I did a full Christmas dinner
Today - Boxing Day has been rest and relax - as I am back work tomorrow.

I certainly did not spent time taking down the tree. Where do you get your energy from?
It's all perfectly tidy and relaxing here, with the family, eating and watching films.
It will come down Sunday / bank holiday and I will enjoy it till then.

I have a stressful job, so working isn't relaxing. And I find being at work for cover 'just in case' terminally dull and frustrating. Also not relaxing!

brawnthesheep · 26/12/2023 20:50

@NoWordForFluffy my point is simply that it isn't the same for everyone. DH and I have stressful jobs but they aren't stressful between Xmas and NY because everything slows down. Obviously this isn't the same for everyone but likewise not everyone who does work tmw has a stressful day. Even when I worked in the retail and the shops were packed with bargain hunters it was pretty fun.

Daisychainsandglitter · 26/12/2023 20:52

YANBU- I hate the week between Christmas and New Year. So boring.

Yet you're labouring the point about how you find it fun, and fail to really fully appreciate that others don't. Many people won't be relaxed simply because they're working. Not like you can put your feet up with a Bailey's and watch TV.

I detest slowing down. It's boring and the day goes too slowly. I don't want to sit and twiddle my thumbs on my own at home (or in an office, if I had to go in).

Equally, I still have Court and client deadlines which don't vanish because it's Christmas, but trying to get instructions is a nightmare as so many people are off. Makes it hard work!

I'm not labouring the point that I find it fun any more than you are labouring the point that the majority return to work and don't enjoy it. I literally said "Obviously this isn't the same for everyone" so I'm not sure how you have interpreted that to mean it's the same for everyone 😆.

A load of a certain sort of person put the tree and decorations beginning or mid December. Of course they want it down now the 'big day' is over.

Traditionally many of us put the tree up on 24th and left it up until Twelfth Night, and oddly not always religious.

I don't think it's as simple as religious or not as some will have advent decorations up at end of Nov beginning of Dec.

StrawberryWater · 26/12/2023 21:07

Our tree went up on the 5th of December and we usually leave it up until 12th night but Christmas has been utterly shite this year so I doubt I'll wait to take it down until then. Will try and make it to New Years but we'll see.

I've never heard of anyone in real life putting their tree up on 24th December

I put mine up on 24th. When the DC were younger, we put it up the day after they finished school, but now they’re older, I like the traditional way of 24th.

SiennaMillar · 26/12/2023 21:12

I want my house back! There’s a tree shedding needles and bloody cards everywhere! I just want to stick it all in the bin now, to be honest! And, for what it’s worth, I absolutely LOVE Christmas. But once it’s over, I’m done. Looking at summer holidays

Really? I know of many who do, or just before in time for the 24th as that's often quite a busy day. The greenery would be dead by Christmas if it went up too soon. We also have a real garland on the mantle. The fresh stuff goes up last.

SauvignonBlanche · 26/12/2023 21:14

YABU, there’s 12 days of Christmas 🎅
The 3 kings haven’t arrived yet. 👑
I only put my tree up on the 23rd, I won’t be taking it down until 12th night 🎄

MrsRetriever · 26/12/2023 21:14

I like a couple of extra chilled days if I’m not working, but I do like the tree and decorations down before NYE.

Unlike many people I do like the first few weeks of January. It always feels very calm and nice & I enjoy hibernating a bit, eating healthy food & going to bed early.

FictionalCharacter · 26/12/2023 21:15

I leave the tree up for a bit because I like it, and we’ll be eating the Christmassy snacks for a while. But you’re right - Christmas is a two day festival, it’s Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

TrixieFatell · 26/12/2023 21:16

I hate the run up so we put our tree up mid Dec and then take it down new year's day. Everyone does it how it suits them.
