This is a genuine question please don’t accuse me of trying to be goady or whatever the hell people say on mumsnet:

my question is countries like USA who literally took over the country from the natives therefore have no right being there, how can they talk about immigrants taking over their jobs, their country etc? Also the UK how can they talk about immigrants etc. when they invaded lots of countries with the British empire and took all the wealth and gems etc and killed thousands of people who opposed them then complain that the same countries try to come over to make their lives better.

It's a mix of smoke/mirrors. Propaganda and ignorance op.

Beezknees · 26/12/2023 14:47

YANBU.

RubySundayy · 26/12/2023 14:49

YABU not to put the topic in the subject line thus forcing people to click and find it out.

but no, YANBU!

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 26/12/2023 14:51

YANBU. People are selfish.

FuckOffTom · 26/12/2023 14:51

I mean, well done for not being a bigot?!

Whygobald · 26/12/2023 14:53

The other side of the coin is how can people from places like Ireland be xenophobic towards immigrants, when millions upon millions of Irish people have emigrated all over the world to escape poverty for generations? People don't need their bigotry to be logical.

AllAroundMyCat · 26/12/2023 14:54

This question applies to so many countries, provinces etc.. all over the world throughout history.
The Roman Empire, The Middle East, Australia and New Zealand...

It's like these people go 'well we're here now, our army is bigger than yours, it's ours now and no one else is welcome unless it's for our good.'

Time and time again.

Begsthequestion · 26/12/2023 14:55

The USA's current most prominent anti-immigrant figure is married to an immigrant.

Racism is illogical, and this is just the extreme end of it.

Welcome to Mumsnet OP.

Where has the OP stated they're new to Mumsnet?

questionsICantAskInRL · 26/12/2023 14:57

Thank you everyone! I was dreading this going the direction many threads do on mumsnet. My question originated as we have a relative from one of these countries and she was going on about how the “immigrants” are making the place bad. I had to bite my tongue and stop myself saying “we’ll the poor natives that were killed etc.” DH said I will sound stupid if I say that as it’s not as simple as clear cut as I’m making it.

OP posts:
WallaceinAnderland · 26/12/2023 15:01

The answer is that there is a difference between immigrants and invaders. I think this is what your DH means.

questionsICantAskInRL · 26/12/2023 15:02

apologies if I’m wrong but if “everyone does go back to where they came from” like lots of racists say then all the people living in Australia and American etc. who are descendants of English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish etc. who are living there what will happen then?! And how would they all fit back in the UK?

OP posts:
MissBuffyAnneSummers · 26/12/2023 15:02

Lots of issues mixed up in there. Some questions

Do you think every inhabitant of current USA and UK are responsible for the sins of those in previous centuries?

What about Brits and Americans whose own ancestors were impoverished and badly treated?

Do you believe in any immigration controls or do you think there should be unlimited immigration?

This is not the other side of the coin. It is the same side of the same coin

She hasn't. That poster is troll hunting.

Because we are not responsible for the behaviour of our ancestors, nor should we base policies of what happened hundreds or thousands of years ago.

I am NOT anti-immigration but this is such a weak argument

Two things, firstly the OP not appearing to know the usual terminology: "whatever the hell people say on mumsnet" being a fairly hefty clue, and secondly, first post with this username. So either new poster, or - possibly more likely now you come to think of it - deliberately namechanged in order to start controversial (some might say goady) thread on Boxing Day of all days.

Oh and in case the OP is reading this - it ain't just the USA and the UK, not by a long, long way. History is full of it, the world over.

If you think that report it instead of being snide.

KylieJennersMakeUpSponge · 26/12/2023 15:14

Also owning land is not an inherent quality. Since the beginning of our time humans have been digging a stick into the ground and saying ‘mine’. Land was often acquired through aggressive and murderous means and I don’t think this should be a basis for which land belongs to which set of people thousands of years later.

zaazaazoo · 26/12/2023 15:15

@KylieJennersMakeUpSponge it's not about blame, it's about the illogical hypocrisy of migrants and descendants of migrants condemning current and future migrants as bad, the route of all problems, negative to a country etc.

I see a difference between invaders/colonisers and asylum seekers/refugees, even economic ones. Neither can reasonably block further immigration, agreed.

Oh yes I agree on that point - it’s often the same Americans who proudly declare “I’m Irish” (or whatever they perceive to be a ‘white’ heritage). They do this because their great great great grandparents emigrated from Ireland. They’ve never been to Ireland or have any relatives living in Ireland. But frankly the answer is <drum roll please> racism! ‘White’ immigration from ‘cool’ European countries is endearing. ‘Black’ immigration is a threat

Because the English would have to go back to Norway and other Scandinavian countries via the Viking invasions, as well as Italy following the Romans, France following 1066 and the rest. So there would be plenty of room, everyone would just love round countries

randomstress · 26/12/2023 15:19

It is not particularly rational to state that the foreign policy of a country in one century has to dictate that of the current or future time.

All countries change through time and their policies internally and externally will change as well.
