Worst Christmas present

I feel ungrateful but also very disappointed. My husband is crap at gifting but this really takes the biscuit. I am a 53 year old woman and we have been together for 26 years. He bought me a periscope. Am I being unreasonable to be disappointed and ungrateful?😓

Struggled today with grief, but by heck this thread cheered me up. Thank you pp's 😊

Moonshine5 · 25/12/2023 21:18

Is he a good partner in other ways? Otherwise life is too precious

Blessedbethefruitz · 25/12/2023 21:23

You've won the award of being the first person to ever make me laugh out loud while co sleeping between 2 VERY over tired little ones.

A periscope. Absolute gold. Wtaf 🤣

At least it's comical, not an ex partners favourite perfume, or something half used and regifted, or absolute garbage. It won't make you sick (assuming no periscope allergies), requires no regular maintenance or ongoing costs or obligations. Just very very strange. I love it!

motleymop · 25/12/2023 21:23

This is such a cheering thread! Bloody hilarious!!

BarryStyles · 25/12/2023 21:24

Yeah my vests bought yesterday from Next (given away by the gift receipt!) now seem uninspired but at least they’re useful. I like the suggestion above to look at him round corners etc. I’ve decided to say let’s not bother next year and I’ll just get something nice for myself instead. Joking aside, the lack of thought is shit, hugs to you all.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 25/12/2023 21:25

I was over the moon to receive a periscope when I was 9. Hours of fun crawling behind the sofa and watching people. Not sure it would be quite as thrilling 40 years later.

StrawberryWater · 25/12/2023 21:26

One of my older sisters gave me half a pack of Christmas window stickers.

Then she had a strop because I didn't buy her some fancy perfume she'd asked for. I got her a book.

The reason I got her a small token gift in the shape of a book is because she has form for shitty gift giving and I don't engage with her any more. For my wedding she gave me a few pounds in loose change (I got her a kitchen aid for the record, something she asked for and something that cost me a lot of money). She's not short of money and neither is her husband.

I knew she'd give me junk again this year so there was no way I was spending anything other than a tenner on her. She's an entitled cow.

FraterculaArctica · 25/12/2023 21:29

Love the periscope.

I got three cheap plastic Chinese battery operated candles from my dad (a notoriously awful gift giver).

This was for OP!

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 25/12/2023 21:30

I'm seeing posts like this so much this year!

I got lube.
At first I thought ooh it's hand cream or something else skin care related and when I opened it I thought oh ok.
There were two other presents I got too, but the lube is all I could think about.
I was told to not buy him a Xmas present, I think I know why now, as him using the lube on me will be it won't it Biscuit

🙄😮

Motorina · 25/12/2023 21:34

A box of value shortbread.

From my parents.

It's the first gift they've got me in years and, honestly, I'd rather they hadn't bothered.

(For clarity, they are extremely wealthy - it is not a situation where this was all that they could afford.)

Sunshineismyfavourite · 25/12/2023 21:36

This made me laugh. I have to be very careful what I say to my DH as he has the most ridiculous memory for things I say. I'm a bit of a chatterbox and often just chat for the sake of it and say things like 'Oh I really need a ....' or 'Oh I saw X in the shop the other day...' I do this all year just idle chatter. Problem is he remembers and then I get it for Christmas. I can hardly ever remember saying I liked it but he is always so pleased with himself for getting me things that I (apparently) want or need. I think it's rather lovely OP that he has obviously thought about it and genuinely thinks you'll enjoy using it. Maybe you have said a few things in the past about stars/planets or something. Just embrace it and treat yourself to a book!

Aposterhasnoname · 25/12/2023 21:43

This is brilliant, I can just imagine the neighbours faces when a periscope pops out of the skylight.

unsurebut · 25/12/2023 21:44

But....but.....why does he think you want to peer out of the skylight??

Unicorntastic · 25/12/2023 21:44

My MIL got me soap, gardening gloves (and TBF), money. I’d rather have an actual present, she is generally a good shopper so just CBA I suspect.

Ladybirder · 25/12/2023 21:47

😂You’ve won the worst Xmas present award!! Oh dear OP! Try and laugh, maybe it needs a discussion that whilst you appreciate the thought you don’t have a need for a periscope so can you exchange for something else. Praying he has the receipt! I thought I had it bad with a travel mug!

Sirian · 25/12/2023 21:48

I got stuff that I wanted at least. My family asked for some gift suggestions a while ago, so DH literally clicked on the links I provided and bought stuff. No thought whatsoever. I provided the links so Great Aunty Nora who doesn’t know me very well didn’t waste her money and didn’t have to think too hard. Not for DH to thoughtlessly just click and buy.

So did I 😂

I don’t mind as our sex life has been really bad for about 13 years and is currently going through a revival. He also got me crotchless thongs 😂

I also received a bottle of wine from my in-laws and I’ve not touched a drop of alcohol since 2005.

DixonD · 25/12/2023 21:51

Forgot to add - he also got me a book about vulvas, which he cheerfully gave to me to unwrap in front of my family!

CornflakeGirl18 · 25/12/2023 21:58

This is hilarious OP!
I'll have to tell my DM75 as she was not happy that a friend had gifted her a car kit consisting of three sponges and an upholstery brush. This friend had also given her the same thing last year!

Left · 25/12/2023 22:02

Periscope allergies 🤣🤣 I choked on my citalopram when I read that! Is the skylight exceptionally high so you’d need a periscope to reach it? Or did he get confused and mean to buy a telescope?

They’re useful for looking out of armoured vehicles so maybe check that he’s not hidden a tank on the drive as a surprise 🙈

It’s so random OP, I hope you’re not feeling too fed up and that he makes up for this in other ways x

Ohthepressureofaname · 25/12/2023 22:09

ssd · 25/12/2023 20:50

Christ where did he buy a periscope?!?

Old navy?? 🤣🤣

Notsurehwhattdo · 25/12/2023 22:10

You'll need a microscope to try and see how much thought he put into your Christmas present.

chloechloe · 25/12/2023 22:13

I’m sorry for your understandable disappointment but this really made me laugh, it’s so random.

Last year I got a pair of ski poles from my brother and sister in law which I was quite puzzled about. Turns out my nephew had borrowed mine without asking and broken them so they decided to gift me a new pair.
