To be annoyed with my mum

She insisted on helping with the buffet and was in charge of the cooking of things. I was getting together all the other bits and the drinks for people arriving.

She told everyone that the food was ready and my two eldest kids ran to get some. I went after them to help my youngest and get something myself and realised that the prawn party selection hadn't been cooked. I went to double check no one had eaten them and my daughter had already eaten one.

I'm pretty anal about cooking thoroughly because I'm emetophobic and I'm so annoyed that she made out she could do a better job and ended up doing this and so worried that my daughter will be ill.

I'm not sure how bad they'll be but I'm so worried now.

You should never eat raw prawns as they do carry a high risk of food poisoning bacteria. Was the prawn platter definitely raw? And not a pre-cooked cold platter? Those platter things are often pre-cooked to be eaten cold.

I'm sure everyone will be absolutely fine. It was an error. She is only human. I'm sore she didn't do it on purpose.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/12/2023 19:40

Perhaps she thought they were already cooked items? She obviously didn't do it on purpose, next time if you're so anal about these things you cook and she can do the other bits and drinks.
Fingers crossed your daughter doesn't fall unwell.

KnowledgeableMomma · 25/12/2023 19:42

I mean, it was one dish? It wasn't like your mum did it on purpose.....just forgot to cook one thing. Put the platter away or get it cooking now. Watch your daughter for any signs she's not feeling well and get on with the day would be my advice.

Candycurrantbun · 25/12/2023 19:43

Were the prawns pink? If they were they were already cooked.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 25/12/2023 19:47

What colour were the prawns? Were they white/translucent or pink? If they were pink then they are cooked even if they are cold. I think it would be pretty difficult to eat a raw prawn - it would taste yuk!

Menomeno · 25/12/2023 19:50

Don’t worry, those things are always pre-cooked. You just bung them in the oven for a few minutes to heat them through.

Pepsipasta · 25/12/2023 19:52

I would have liked to have done the cooking but she shooed me out of the kitchen with some waffling about doing buffets for years etc.

Im a bit rubbish with food. It's not my forte but it's these. They do look a little pink but does say they need cooking for 13 minutes.

The prawns are already cooked. The ‘cooking’ is just to heat them up and crisp up the outside coating. You really need to relax about this; your daughter will be perfectly fine and your mum’s mistake has zero consequences so cut her some slack.

these two comments don't make sense.

What @ManateeFair said !!

KrisAkabusi · 25/12/2023 21:09

Massive overreaction. Your mother was just trying to help and missed one thing.

ComfyBoobs · 25/12/2023 21:13

Those are cooked 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hope you haven’t gone off at her because you have the wrong end of the stick.

festivepains · 25/12/2023 21:16

Calm your farm.

She won't have set out to serve you raw prawns.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 25/12/2023 21:24

Yep agree with others. Definitely cooked but won't be at their best as the pastry will be a bit soggy and meh! Won't poison anyone though so don't worry OP!
