To think Instagram is incredibly boring

Everybody tries to outdo each other, whether that's people I went to school with or Love Island contestants, or people from TOWIE.
Endless people posting pictures of their 1 year old child surrounded by 25 million presents under the tree, as if they'll know what most of them actually are.
Matching pyjamas..
Huge fake smiles with gleaming white teeth, fake tan, long hair extensions, microbladed eyebrows, huge lips, the doll look basically.
Paid partnerships with some crappy toothpaste brand nobody's heard of.
Those daft make up tutorials where they have to wave each item at the camera like we've never seen it before.
Bottomless brunches with the girls.
Date nights with 'this one'.
Huge OTT proposals that just happened to be caught on camera.
It's just all the same, a carefully curated image. I used to feel inferior for not being like this but now I can see exactly how fake it all is. Does anyone else find this?

OP posts:
Dixiechickonhols · 25/12/2023 16:48

Depends who you follow? I think it suggests people you may like so if you follow lots like that it features those. My account isn’t like that and I follow some nice people. I’m more into walks, over 40s fashion, home baking etc.

Willywanker1 · 25/12/2023 16:49

No I don't find that but I don't follow a load of vacuous cunts

LinnieM · 25/12/2023 16:50

Wtf is wrong with microbladed eyebrows?!

BriocheForBreakfast · 25/12/2023 16:52

Depends who you follow. Doesn't sound like my Instagram at all

😂🤩

BlueberryVelvet · 25/12/2023 16:54

My Instagram is full of people with cats, people with houses that are being done up and ski reels.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 25/12/2023 16:55

I deleted Instagram because I just didn't gel with it. I do still love Facebook, but it really does depend on who you follow.

LeroyJenkinssss · 25/12/2023 16:55

Sorry OP that’s based on who you follow 😂

mine is mostly knitting, art and DIY and whilst it does make me feel like I should actually do something they do seem a lovely bunch.

FriendsDrinkBook · 25/12/2023 16:56

Depends what you use it for. I sew my own clothes so follow hundreds that do the same. Its great to find out how a pattern I want to sew looks on different women.

Mcemmabell · 25/12/2023 16:58

This is the reason I deleted Instagram. It's engineered to make you feel insecure. Everything is advertising. People only show the best parts of their lives. Which is a rubbish thing to see when you're having a stressful time. And it's all fake af.

Not to mention people who share and share images and videos of their children for clout. So wrong.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/12/2023 16:58

This is why though I’m on Instagram I hardly post anything and even if I do I’ll be damned if I’m competing with someone I barely see as to whose house/tree/presents are better than each others.

PonyPatter44 · 25/12/2023 16:58

Same as any other social media- follow better people. I dont use IG much but the accounts I follow are mostly dance, elephants and make-up (don't ask...). On FB I follow my friends and none of us are naff piles of presents people.

The whole point of social media is that its like any relationship and its meant to make your life better. If it isn't making your life better, cut it loose.

imho99 · 25/12/2023 16:59

Vacuous cunts 🤣🤣🤣

Jacfrost · 25/12/2023 16:59

LinnieM · 25/12/2023 16:50

Nothing in isolation, but the OP is clearly describing a particular vacuous look

megletthesecond · 25/12/2023 17:00

Yanbu. It's very slow and fake. I was dipping into it for months before I realised those stupid stories existed. I don't have time to wait to watch that nonsense. I've never posted.
At least facebook was fast and comments and pictures all pinged up at the same time.

Askforwisdom · 25/12/2023 17:02

My Instagram is full of recipes, psychology content, patenting pages, comedy, motivational stuff. I don't follow anyone like you.

Yes I agree with you here but as @FriendsDrinkBook I follow similar people for sewing or crochet people plus I’ve got a few vintage people I buy from or get inspo from and there’s cat videos!

The kids/babies one really winds me up, so many of them post either with or without parents consent them, sometimes they put hearts or cartoons over their faces but a lot don’t. Or they make up a story about their kids and don’t post photos of them, to gain traction. Why??

SkyBlueBoy · 25/12/2023 17:02

Deleted IG and Twitter a couple of months ago as it does nothing but make you feel inferior to other people. Also deleted Fb just over a week ago for the same reason.

I don't particularly miss it, but I do still pick my phone up quite a bit, realising I have nothing to look at 😂

Echobelly · 25/12/2023 17:02

It doesn't really do anything for me. I moved to it two years ago as a place to share my photos when FB just became clogged up with rubbish that stopped me seeing my friends' feeds, but I couldn't find many contacts on there so I can't really use it as a social platform in the same way as FB. I just get shown a lot of the same stuff (usually funny animals) by the algorithm, but it just isn't engaging, especially as it makes it relatively hard to find stuff you've liked - I don't know why, maybe it's trying to encourage people to share/engage more actively.

Have never followed any influencers or 'look at my perfect life' types, so can't comment on that.

I miss FB as was - I genuinely really liked it as a place to connect with friends, as i have friends from lots of different contexts and it was useful having one place to connect with all of them, but FB decided that it would just fill my feed with loads of (usually wrong) recommendations, meme pages and adverts

Testina · 25/12/2023 17:03

You seem a little bit late to this realisation 🤣

Why have you filled your Insta with people like that? These are your choices. You’re throwing shade here, but nobody forced you to follow them.’

My SM is nothing like that!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/12/2023 17:04

I’m wondering what we all did before social media but then I’ve known or seen kids of my age/their parents/me even who were all about point scoring. Just the thing back then was it was just the locals in the streets around you who knew about this.

Magnificentbeast · 25/12/2023 17:07

Mine doesn't look like that. I have a bit of fashion/stying, cooking, parent stuff.

Maybe start unfollowing some people.

You can do what I did and just delete Facebook for 2-3 years. Now I’m back on it (to access messenger as I’ve got friends I speak to via there and when I got a new phone it was hard to get to messenger without reactivating my Facebook account. So I might wish people Happy Birthday but I hardly post anything there apart from the odd funny video. I don’t get people saying they missed me (like they did when I deleted my account a long time ago, work bullying) but I don’t care!

APurpleSquirrel · 25/12/2023 17:09

Mine doesn't look like that - mine is full of cats, soap makers, crafters, gardening, cooking, friends & brands/shops I like.
You create what you follow; IG then makes suggestions based on that.
Don't follow those accounts, it's really not differ complex.

Yes - people have always found ways to compete with each other.
