My turkey is still frozen

Got a turkey, it’s frozen still. Been in the fridge overnight. If I take it out and leave it on the side to defrost am I gonna give everyone food poisoning for Xmas?

Can you cook something else and have turkey tomorrow? I would prefer that to food poisoning personally. Tbh, I like all the trimmings and don't care what the meat is.

xmaspanic · 25/12/2023 10:03

I defrost mine outside the fridge. Might be a bit late but this website has good advice www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-to-defrost-a-turkey

One Xmas ours was still slightly frozen. I put it in cold water to help it along. Worked a treat and didn't posion anyone

toomuchfaster · 25/12/2023 10:04

No, I would have left it out all night! But apparently it works quicker if you submerge it in cold water, changed every 40 minutes or so.

Worldgonecrazy · 25/12/2023 10:06

If you can, cut it up into quarters. Place in tepid or very lukewarm water and change water frequently. It will be fine.

Frozen Turkey can take 4 days to defrost in the fridge!! I think you're best off having something else

BlueberryVelvet · 25/12/2023 10:08

Just start to cook it at a low temp and turn it up. Use a thermometer to make sure it reaches 80°.

Honestly people are far too cautious.

dementedpixie · 25/12/2023 10:11

Should have taken it out days ago!
Using the cold water method would probably be fastest

Exactly what I was thinking 😂

DappledThings · 25/12/2023 10:13

Nothing ever really defrosts in the fridge does it? I had a bottle of milk fail to defrost over 48 hours in the fridge last week. Definitely get it out now and cook it tomorrow.

AnnaMagnani · 25/12/2023 10:29

Take it out, put in cold water and change the water every hour. Really works.

Will be defrosted for tomorrow.

Honestly I leave everything out to defrost until no longer rock hard before putting in the fridge as otherwise even a salmon fillet takes days to defrost in the fridge.

Muchof · 25/12/2023 10:33

Turkeys should be defrosted in the fridge, but it would take about four or five days depending on how big it is.

dementedpixie · 25/12/2023 10:41

I defrost everything on the worktop. Takes forever to defrost in the fridge

MyLibrarywasdukedomlargeenough · 25/12/2023 10:50

We had that issue one year, DH lovingly bathed it for about 40 mins under running water that was warm. I was having kittens because you are not supposed to wash poultry though in days of old my Mothers generation did. We survived. We almost always have fresh though we did again have a frozen turkey last year and it took 2.5 days to defrost.

OnlyFannys · 25/12/2023 10:59

How are you at making carrot crush?

Ilikewinter · 25/12/2023 11:15

Do you have defrost setting on your oven bu any chance??

Mirrormeback · 25/12/2023 11:20

Put in the sink in tepid water and change the water every 30 mins

OnlyFannys · 25/12/2023 11:21

Good point, well made Jimbo!

festivetinseling · 25/12/2023 11:25

Mine is a relatively small one - 4kg, and that had been defrosting in the fridge since Friday, with a few hours here and there in the kitchen to kick start it.

There were still a few ice crystals in the cavity this morning, but not enough to worry about.

Housebuyer37 · 25/12/2023 11:36

I've never defrosted anything in the fridge in my life. Always the worktop. Never had food poisoning

Mynewnameis · 25/12/2023 11:38

Yeah Chop it up. Probably cook better anyway

picklepotage · 25/12/2023 11:43

How long have you been trying to defrost it in your fridge?

I'm not sure even leaving it overnight out of the fridge would have been enough time to defrost it.

Chop it up maybe put in a plastic bag and dunk in warm water for 20mins might work. Good luck

tuvamoodyson · 25/12/2023 11:49

Purpleavocado · 25/12/2023 11:15

With stork!

Cup-a-soup with a twist.

Stressedafff · 25/12/2023 20:40

I ended up cutting a leg off and putting it in the toaster, went down nicely with carrot crush and Mary pipers 😉

ended up leaving it on the side and having dinner an hour later. No ones got the shits yet so think everything went fine! Merry Christmas everyone
