Turkey emergency

Buffypaws · 24/12/2023 17:07

Mumsnet is my only hope now.

Father having gone on about not wanting a turkey has left it too late to buy one.

Is there any chance anyone in the Reading area has accidentally bought too many and needs to offload one??? Will pay obv.

Post on a local site on Facebook. I’ve seen quite a few excess turkeys up for gifting in the last 24hours.

SonicAllanKey · 24/12/2023 17:14

Our Sainsbury’s up north is open until 7pm tonight. Worth a check near you at any open supermarkets??

Sunshineandrainbow · 24/12/2023 17:14

Could you try some smaller express shops?

TinselTitts · 24/12/2023 17:14

Yes, a local site would be much better.

Although you could also ask MNHQ to put 'Reading' in your thread title, if anyone's around.

Sunshineandrainbow · 24/12/2023 17:15

Download olio app. Some might go on there later!

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 24/12/2023 17:16

All my local supermarkets are open till 6pm

Mirrormeback · 24/12/2023 17:17

M&S has loads in

SisterMichaelsHabit · 24/12/2023 17:17

Our co-op is still open. Have a Google for one near you. Otherwise if you can't find anywhere, your father will have to take the consequences, and maybe not stop everyone from buying a turkey in good time next year (or, shock: buy one himself).

Buffypaws · 24/12/2023 17:23

Thanks everyone. Found a Turkey in a coop. The issue is it seems to want a 40 hour defrost.

can I put it in water and do it quicker??

OP posts:
Jessforless · 24/12/2023 17:26

Put it in cold water and change the water every 30/40 minutes.

cook it as soon as it’s defrosted.

SmudgeButt · 24/12/2023 17:26

do you have a defrost setting on your oven? Otherwise I'd keep it well bagged up and in hot but not boiling water for a couple of hours. Then unwrap it all and ensure it's place so that air can circulate inside as well as the outside. It only needs 40 hours if that's all wrapped up and in the fridge. Unless it's actually the size of an ostrich.

Don't worry if it still feels a bit cold or frozen deep in when you go to cook it just take that into account.

gavisconismyfriend · 24/12/2023 17:30

Yes, as @Jessforless says, thaw in cold water, change water every 30 mins. Internet suggests thawing it breast down, still wrapped in plastic completely covered in water, and allowing 30mins thawing per pound.

Ours closed usual Sun time. Pretty sure Sun trading doesn't allow.

DragonMama3 · 24/12/2023 17:34

Good luck with the turkeys

MorrisZapp · 24/12/2023 17:34

My sister takes the legs off hers and cooks them the night before. Then main bit needs less defrosting/cooking time. Nice juicy legs, not a dried out husk as the enormous breast part cooks.

Win win.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 24/12/2023 17:35

Just left M&S and they had lots left reduced to £25 from over £100

Tinselunderthetv · 24/12/2023 17:43

Co-op? Had loads earlier

Fulshaw · 24/12/2023 17:46

Why are you running around last minute to appease someone who has randomly changed their mind?

Buffypaws · 24/12/2023 17:56

I’m not! He doesn’t want turkey, I do! I’m not having that twat ruin Christmas dinner.

anyway it’s in a pan of water in the sink now. We’ll see what happens! But by hell or high water that turkey is getting served.

But then why didn’t you get one anyway, before now? Who is hosting - you or him? I’m confused how this situation came about!

Anyway, hope it defrosts in time and you enjoy a yummy turkey!

All of this! Curious to know too.

(Anyway hope defrosting goes ok!)

DeedlessIndeed · 24/12/2023 18:50

@DragonMama3 - not everywhere in the UK has the old Sunday trading hours! Everything I come to England I get caught out!

I’m at my parents’. My mum said every year she gets a Turkey then dad gets another one cheap last minute and she gets annoyed because there’s too much. So she didn’t get one. So he didn’t get one because he’s a troll. He said he was going to get one and that Waitrose was open until 6. Then he came back saying oops it was shut. I have no idea why mother allowed this.

I didn't know that!
