To be slightly annoyed at nephews comment

mrsaxos · 24/12/2023 14:31

My DS who is in his early 20's is a similar age to his cousin. Recently DS commented on a social media post by his cousin which included a photo of said cousin smoking a cigarette, DS commented "don't smoke, you're so crazy" His cousin then commented back saying "Did your mum hack you".

I am very anti-smoking and I have to admit nephews comment just king of irked me a bit. Am I being unreasonable, DH who doesn't smoke as well thinks I am."

Tbf the cousin’s reply was politer than what I’d get from my cousins if I posted something like that!

If your son is in his early 20s he probably shouldn't be commenting on other peoples choices. If he was 15/16 I could understand. Your son has made his (sensible choices) but has to respect other peoples.

This. I hate smoking. Saw my mother suffer with emphysema. But it's absolutely none of my business if others smoke and I'd never comment on it. Your son shamed his cousin. His cousin shamed him right back. Rightly so

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/12/2023 15:04

How utterly ridiculous.

GettingStuffed · 24/12/2023 15:06

Now vaping is commonplace kids are reverting to cigarettes, they've missed previous generations dying from smoking related illnesses. I'm impressed your son called him out on it.

Chickpea17 · 24/12/2023 15:06

This got to be a wind up!!

GrandParade · 24/12/2023 15:07

So your son made a judgemental comment, his cousin came back with a mildly bitchy, misogynistic retort, and now you’re ‘irked’ about the retort?

Maybe you should all step away from social media for a while.

LakeTiticaca · 24/12/2023 15:08

A word of advice. Stay away from the younger generations Social media.
Especially family members.
Then build a bridge and get over it 😅

Get a fucking grip.

Peoplehelppeople · 24/12/2023 15:13

YANBU. Smoking is disgusting and I wouldn't hesitate to tell a family member or friend so.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 24/12/2023 15:14

They're both in their 20s so old enough to make their own decisions and have their own arguments. If your DS had been 10 you might have had a point.

Sugarsun · 24/12/2023 15:14

What are you so offended about?

Your DS tried telling his adult cousin what to do/not to do and so the cousin rightly sent a response saying he’s acting like a mum.

Is your DS offended or just you?
Because it sounds like DS and his cousin are playing around and you’re trying to make it into something it’s not.

pinkyredrose · 24/12/2023 15:14

crumblingschools · 24/12/2023 14:41

Not sure why it is okay to blame mum for a comment. It feels a bit misogynistic to me

It's not misogynistic, the Op is fiercely anti smoking and it's obviously rubbed off on the son.

porridgeisbae · 24/12/2023 15:16

It was just a joke/teasing

porridgeisbae · 24/12/2023 15:18

Nothing wrong with what your DS said (good for him for trying to discourage someone from smoking. But your nephew's comment wasn't awful either

widowtwankywashroom · 24/12/2023 15:18

For Christ sake.
It's Christmas eve😅 have you got nothing else to worry about
Sit down with a fag and a gin and unclench!

whynotwhatknot · 24/12/2023 15:18

YANBU. Smoking is disgusting and I wouldn't hesitate to tell a family member or friend so.

And I'd tell you where to stick your opinion.

Underthesea65 · 24/12/2023 15:20

🙄

AnneValentine · 24/12/2023 15:22

Yabu

LifeonMarsnotVenus · 24/12/2023 15:23

I can't work out why my previous post was deleted?

I said YANBU and essentially that Mumsnet is full of alcoholics and smokers and so most of the replies will reflect that? You only have to read a few threads talking about alcohol consumption and what people think is normal, to know this.

Stating facts is hardly offensive. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Velvian · 24/12/2023 15:24

Yabu, but good for your son. It is pretty dim to take up smoking nowadays and it does affect other people.
