To be embarrassed I left present at work?

Ri888girli · 23/12/2023 10:39

I broke up from work yesterday and my one of my work friends bought me a present to which I said I would open it after I got back from my meeting and placed it on the windowsill. I then completely forgot about it and went home and now the present will be sat on the windowsill unopened until January. I’m really embarrassed about it and hope she didn’t see it.

“Broke up from work”?!

“Broke up from work”?!

OP might be a teacher. I’m a teacher and still think of it as breaking up from work for the holidays just as I did when I was a pupil at school.

oneflewoverthe · 23/12/2023 10:42

It depends on your workplace and how far away you live. You could go back and get it

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 23/12/2023 10:48

I mean you forgot it on the windowsill, you didn't chuck it in the office bin by her desk..... What is there to be embarrassed about?

Valhalla17 · 23/12/2023 10:49

Go and get it?

10HailMarys · 23/12/2023 10:51

Just message her and say “Aaarrggh, I accidentally left your present at work! I’m such an idiot, I didn’t realise until I got home! Will it be OK until new year?” and I’m sure she’ll be perfectly fine about it. It’s really not a big deal.

YouAndMeAndThem · 23/12/2023 10:51

I'd probably message ah shit left my present as work, what a dumbass! I'll get it in Jan!

CalistoNoSolo · 23/12/2023 11:16

Why are you embarrassed? Bit of a weird way to feel about a really minor mistake.

TootsyPants · 23/12/2023 11:18

I broke up from work this week too. Just saying...

Doesn't your work lock up and put the alarm on during their Christmas shutdown?

UndergroundPenguin · 23/12/2023 11:21

Also OP just apologise to the person who gave it to you if they see that you left your present behind. I'm sure they won't assume you decided their gift was unimportant, but rather that you just forgot.

Mine doesn't because it's a hospital and doesn't have a Christmas shutdown. I'm non clinical and the doors to the building I work in might be locked till Wednesday because the majority of people who work in it are off till then, but my swipe card will let me in. The building doesn't have an alarm. I'd definitely be able to go and rescue a forgotten present.

OP I'd ask the giver if it will survive till you're back at work, and if not and you can access your workplace just go back and get it. Otherwise just open it when you're back.

“Broke up from work”?!

I work in an FE college. We finished up on Wednesday and won't be back until the 8th January, so it feels like breaking up for a school holiday!

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 23/12/2023 11:55

I had a colleague who used to say 'broke up' - large corporate with no shutdown period - just a phrase some folk use to mean starting holidays.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 23/12/2023 11:58

Awww for some reason the image of the unopened present on the windowsill sounds cute. These things happen.

“Broke up from work”?!

really helpful input

Just go in early on the first day back and get it then before she gets a chance to see it, then make sure you mention to her 'thanks for your present by the way I really loved it,' when you have your 'nice christmas?' catch up. Even if she left work after you and did notice it was still there when you finished it's unlikely she'll remember 10 days later. She won't care when you opened it, just whether you liked it.

Why can't you go and fetch it?

@UndergroundPenguin no, my office is still available (with security) all this weekend and is then closed fully for Xmas and boxing day. Appreciate not all will be open, but if it's open I'm sure OP could get it!
