It was ever thus. Never really understood why myself.

PeppaPigOinkOinkOink · 22/12/2023 19:35

Its not about how long the shop is shut. Its about the traditions, the different meals, multiple courses, the picky bits. It's never been about how long the shops close, it's about making things special at Christmas.

sprigatito · 22/12/2023 19:36

Is it "panic", or is it that people don't want to go shopping over the Christmas period, when they may have guests, or simply enjoy having a few days of uninterrupted holiday where everything is sorted and nobody has to go to a supermarket?

Panic buying is something else, I think.

Serene135 · 22/12/2023 19:36

I think people always find a reason to panic buy - Christmas, Easter, Bank holidays, snow forecast etc.

girlfriend44 · 22/12/2023 19:37

Where have you been op?

It's been like this for years.

SocksAndTheCity · 22/12/2023 19:37

Maybe because people want to relax and enjoy their break, and not go shopping again for a few days? A lot of people will have guests staying too - it's hardly 'panicking', is it?

OhmygodDont · 22/12/2023 19:37

It’s more that we change our eating habits for Christmas no?

Though I’ve got everything I don’t need fresh fresh now anyway. I’ll brave the shops tomorrow for the last bits.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 22/12/2023 19:38

We buy a lot of food because there's a lot of people coming over the Christmas period and we don't want to spend any of that time in the supermarket. One shop for the lot.

Exactly this.

I went shopping yesterday and bought more than I normally would on a Thursday as I don't want to go back to the supermarket if I can avoid it. I felt vindicated when I drove past earlier and people were circling the car park.

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 22/12/2023 19:38

Ah yes, we get variations of this thread every year.

Although the shops may be open, perhaps people don’t want to have to go to them and want to do other things?

perhaps peoplE want to buy special things/more food than usual simply because
its Christmas?

lots of different reasons, OP. It’s not hard to think of them.

Come on, it’s all good. Money sloshing around the economy, businesses doing well, no one is going short. It’s hardly the bog roll crisis of 2020.

This!

I find the mild hysteria of “Tesco substituted my cranberry stuffing with sage and onion and now Christmas is RUINED!!!” both odd and amusing tbh

AhBiscuits · 22/12/2023 19:44

No panic buying here. We need a bit more food with kids off school and us off work for a week. It's nice to buy a few treats and more special things as is customary at Christmas.

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of those threads this year.

I hate food shopping at the best of times, Christmas is really just something else though.

Willmafrockfit · 22/12/2023 19:47

i agree, people dont want to go shopping on 24th december

marychristmas22 · 22/12/2023 19:47

Yanbu and I'm guilty of it myself. I get so anxious about us not having enough to eat not just on the day itself but in the days after. I love to have days of picky food and always worry that we'll run out. It's harder to plan for that than meal plan.

It's bloody stupid though and I do the same thing every year.

Willmafrockfit · 22/12/2023 19:48

and i dont want to go shopping on boxing day either!

Ridiculous. Most of it gets binned.

Jeannie88 · 22/12/2023 20:02

It's mad but I've come to realise that the few days before Christmas is when you can your fresh veg so that explains supermarket being crowded. Also no matter how organised I try to be there are always a few things I need to get, especially with family birthdays Christmas eve amd boxing day! X

DanceMumTaxi · 22/12/2023 20:03

Many people will be having relatives to stay so will need more food than usual. Plus no one wants to be going backwards and forwards to the supermarket.
