I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t want to have to do any shopping, not just food, for a week after Christmas.
So what with lovely leftovers, buying plenty means I don’t have to.
And none of it will be wasted.

NonPlayerCharacter · 22/12/2023 21:23

Theres only so much cheese you can eat in one/two days.

WimbyAce · 22/12/2023 21:24

I need to go tomorrow but that's our normal weekly shopping day. Won't be buying too much. I actually like nipping to the shops after Christmas as gets me out of the house for a breather.

Believe it or not OP, the vast majority of the country are cooking a big meal consisting of mostly the same stuff on the same day of the year. It’s not about how long the shops are shut 🙄

😂yes, this! You put it better than I could

Plus, I don’t really want to go to the supermarket at all between 23rd and 28th, but in that time I am hosting at least 3 different sets of family and friends for different types of meals on different days.

3 trolleys of stuff... mental

How many people do they have visiting over Christmas? How big is the party they're having?

Wintersgirl · 22/12/2023 21:27

Tesco today was heaving, there was a massive queue to get in the car park! Sainsbury's were busy too but you could move about a bit more...

ssd · 22/12/2023 21:29

Willmafrockfit · 22/12/2023 19:47

i agree, people dont want to go shopping on 24th december

I going then

Namefleeting · 22/12/2023 21:30

Makes perfect sense to me that people would buy more. Nowt to do with shops being shut for a day, and all to do with having lots more people to cater for. While my family are staying, I want to do things with them, not go grocery shopping.

Yes down here they were queuing to get in Tesco and nowhere to park in Morrisons. Hoping it's better tomorrow, I only need basics as am elsewhere Christmas day and Boxing Day and have already bought goodies.

mn29 · 22/12/2023 21:31

Veg, cream, fresh things have to be bought last minute. It’s often for a large crowd on Christmas Day and/or boxing day. There’s more food than usual on those days, so it seems like a lot. I don’t know that it’s necessarily panic buying.

2Rebecca · 22/12/2023 21:32

Most people eat the same things at Christmas and shops do run out plus xmas eve shopping is miserable. Why would you not get it all bought in advance?

AllAroundMyCat · 22/12/2023 21:32

I think most people have pre-prepared but, like most people fresh stuff needs to be gotten as late as possible, given that so much of the prepared foods expire before Christmas Day!

Off out at 6am tomorrow to get salad bits and more fucking wine!

Sirian · 22/12/2023 21:33

I know the shops are only closed for one day but I don’t have time to go shopping again. I have to visit family, and bake multiple cakes and pies and loads of other time consuming shit, and clean the whole house (and keep it clean because people will pop in).

Also I need specific ingredients and I can’t afford to risk them being out of stock, I need to get them now so I know I’ve got them. Imagine if I went to the shop on Boxing Day and couldn’t get any custard for the trifle, or they didn’t have the sort of bacon I like for sandwiches! Everything needs to be safely in my fridge now.

StragglyTinsel · 22/12/2023 21:34

Of course the supermarkets were busy today. There’s a set date for Christmas and people are looking to shop for that. It’s always busy just before Christmas.

It will be even busier tomorrow. And busy on Sunday too. There will be queues for the car park. The tills will all be queued out and people with have multiple trolleys. It’s always like that.

I was in M&S today getting a turkey and pigs in blankets. The self service queue was enormous. But I knew it would be before I went in. It’s Friday 22nd December.

Annoyingly I forgot to put bin bags and salt in my Amazon delivery (came this morning) and I have none of either. So I will need to do some shopping tomorrow. I think I’ll go to the corner shop because I know the supermarkets will be bedlam. And no one needs me wandering around in there picking up bin bags.

Differentstarts · 22/12/2023 21:35

I do a big shop for Christmas not because the shop is shut for a day but because I'm catering for 18 people over 2 days and it's not possible to do a long time in advance because of the dates on fresh food. I don't think people are panic buying

Sirian · 22/12/2023 21:35

Also, people drink over Xmas. Which means they can’t drive to the supermarket. It’s no good having two glasses of sherry then realising you’ve run out of butter.

Hedjwitch · 22/12/2023 21:36

Other than turkey and associated trimmings, its a normal shop for us. Thsnk God I dont have room to.host anyone

If you go early you should be ok?

Wow, that's a ton of food and drink required!

Not necessarily, if you're feeding your whole family three meals a day, every day plus hosting an extra family or two on Christmas day.

Yep thankfully it's only once a year

BobnLen · 22/12/2023 21:41

I think tomorrow will be the worst, we went today, didn't have to buy too much as I had a Tesco delivery on Wednesday, it was the latest I could get but of course no good for a lot of the fresh stuff. We went into M&S and then Waitrose, both busy but I'm glad I went today. Don't intend to get any food shopping now until Tesco comes next Thursday.

BrandyandGinger · 22/12/2023 21:44

Most of the year my weekly shop consists of healthy food plus some microwave popcorn and a few packets of biscuits for the teenagers. Today I attempted to buy enough Pringles, Doritos and chocolate to last them a week. I probably didn't succeed (they are bottomless pits with hollow legs) but in my mind I'm enjoying the idea that I won't be in a supermarket for a week.
