Its not about how long the shop is shut. Its about the traditions, the different meals, multiple courses, the picky bits. It's never been about how long the shops close, it's about making things special at Christmas.

This

Maybe because people want to relax and enjoy their break, and not go shopping again for a few days? A lot of people will have guests staying too - it's hardly 'panicking', is it?

Agree

Catza · 22/12/2023 20:57

Shopping on Boxing Day is great. You get all the fancy Christmas bits at 50% or less due to supermarkets overstocking. We have a tradition in the family of having a fancy dinner on the boxing day due to this. Christmas is a lot more relaxed for us and I haven’t done “the big shop” for years. Haven’t noticed shrivelled up veg on the 24th either. As I said, all the good stuff is still up on the 26th.

NonPlayerCharacter · 22/12/2023 20:58

I assume they're cooking much more food than usual and would prefer not to have to keep popping out. I don't think they're panicking over a couple of bank holidays.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 22/12/2023 20:58

I plan to live in my pajamas between Christmas and New Year so do a big shop so I dont have to go anywhere that requires public decency.

Tumbleweed101 · 22/12/2023 20:58

Many people are hosting extra people and probably buying differently to usual. I actually have less people to host this year so feeling pretty chill about it all but I don't want to go out between tomorrow and 27th so have made sure I have everything sorted food wise.

Notsurehwhattdo · 22/12/2023 21:00

Yesterday I bought enough to last me until the 27th, meals planned out etc. I have no desire to step back into a supermarket until the 27th or 28th of December. It was actually quiet when I went so I'm glad I missed the rush which was bound to happen today.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/12/2023 21:01

Meat, done; puds, done; chocs, cheese, biscuits, crackers for cheese, done; pickles done, gravy, pigs, etc, done.

I am planning to be at Tescos by 7 tomorrow for the fruit, veg, bread, milk, etc. I won't be going near a supermarket again until 30th. Shame really, usually I snap up lots of treaty things on Boxing Day for half price Sad.

Happy 🎄

OneHornedFlyingPurplePeopleEater · 22/12/2023 21:01

It's partially a vicious cycle - it's so busy and shops run out of stuff that you can't just pop in for something when you need it.

But is also:
More meals at home than usual (off work/school)
Extra people over
Visiting others and arriving back too late/leaving too early to go shopping
Closed for a couple of days so people whose normal shopping days are mon/tue need to go early, adding more people
Generally associating Christmas with eating more
Don't want to spend precious time off shopping

We're out both days, but still need food in the house for breakfast and for the days we're home after

Wexone · 22/12/2023 21:01

sprigatito · 22/12/2023 19:36

Is it "panic", or is it that people don't want to go shopping over the Christmas period, when they may have guests, or simply enjoy having a few days of uninterrupted holiday where everything is sorted and nobody has to go to a supermarket?

Panic buying is something else, I think.

100 percent this. I don't plan on stepping outside the door over Xmas. if need anything local shop that can walk to will do. I have stocked up on Nice little nibbles plus wine for the week. its been a shite month looking forward to doing nothing. now if here in Ireland they changed the licensing laws for Xmas week I would be there at 7am and cam buy everything I need in one go

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 22/12/2023 21:02

I work in Aldi, it's been so bad today I ended up having a panic attack in the warehouse. Absolutely ridiculous behaviour.

And don't even get me started on the customers complaining because we have to restock the bloody shelves that are being emptied every 5 minutes and have the audacity to be in the aisle to do.

Some are lovely though, we've had lots of goodies gifted to us by customers.

Good idea! Might go for a nosy myself and cook up a feast.

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 22/12/2023 21:09

@marychristmas22 it is!!

Lifeomars · 22/12/2023 21:10

I was in Asda yesterday and it was ok, I was quite surprised as I have known it be like a battlefield and just getting the trolley down the aisle was stressful. I don't think there is as much money around this year and the other thing I noticed was there wasn't much stuff that really tempted me. I like to get it out of the way so I can enjoy not going anywhere near a shop for as long as I possibly can. I menu plan and freeze loads of stuff. I am going to a friend's house on the 25th and we are all bringing contributions for a buffet, I am doing salmon, potato salad, macaroons and bringing a bottle of Cava and a bottle of Savigion Blanc. We are going to use paper plates and just relax

PuppyMonkey · 22/12/2023 21:10

i think the OP is talking bollocks, but I did just Grin at PP buying pickled onions “in case they’re required.”

Ifailed · 22/12/2023 21:10

For all those people who are cooking for many more people than normal, presumably those people don't need to buy food? Hence there should be less people shopping, but those that are buy more?

So there should be fewer people shopping?

wronginalltherightways · 22/12/2023 21:15

I went and bought lots of food today. Not panic buying, but ensuring I have enough food to feed 3 teenagers and a husband without needing to go back near a store until after Boxing Day. And they are all very snacky-oriented right now and want nice dinners.

But they may be hosting someone else in turn on another day!! Plus we all need the basics anyway!

How many days a year does anyone lay on a spread to the extent they do on Christmas Day?

It all makes perfect sense to me! It's finding a way to avoid the worst of the crowds that baffles me though...

AppleandSpice · 22/12/2023 21:18

If anything like me, it’s not panic buying it’s buying enough to see us through until January. I’m totally done in with the Christmas prep and the week in between Christmas and new year is my time to relax, chill and do the bare minimum and that’s what I intend to do. Not setting foot in a shop now until after new year.

That theory would only work if they live in one square mile of each other! We've got 10 guests arriving on Christmas Eve coming from Oxfordshire (we're Sussex) but there will be families in Oxfordshire who will be hosting more people than we are, so it balances itself out...

Tighginn · 22/12/2023 21:21

It's the roads, mayhem. Why are people not get delivery? It's like when we had a inclination the first lockdown was imminent...

You have to book a delivery slot many weeks in advance for Christmas.

christmaspawpaws · 22/12/2023 21:22

I was just doing my usual food shop as I'm back to work on the 27th and wanted to make sure I had stuff for work lunches etc

Lovemusic82 · 22/12/2023 21:22

I think it gets worse each year even though shops are now only shut for one day (some for two). I can understand it 30 years ago when shops were shut for a few days but now it’s just crazy.

Christmas dinner is just a roast with a few extras.
Turkey isn’t actually that special.
Theres only so much cheese you can eat in one/two days.

Probably no slots left and some people prefer to browse or choose veg themselves.
