MDF built in wardrobes

We got a quote from a local carpenter to do wardrobes. He said they’ll be MDF and unpainted. Is this fairly common?

So are all built-in wardrobes first built and then painted? Don’t they come in many colours like IKEA ?

Yes they are built and then you paint them. Unless you go sharps etc which are presumably built to order and painted before being shipped and fitted. Joiners work with wood not paint!

If he's a carpenter, he'll presumably be building them from scratch rather than using pre-cut, pre-sized pieces, so it will be bespoke - his job as a carpenter is to build the furniture, not paint it. If you want something more IKEA-ish that's made from pre-coloured and fixed size pieces, maybe try a fitted bedroom specialist? Some places that do fitted kitchens also do fitted wardrobes.
