Went into M&S today for a mocha and I was told by the lady that served me that it’s mokka? Have I been pronouncing it wrong my whole life? 🤣 I pronounce it mo cha

It's mokka.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/12/2023 15:39

It's pronounced mock ah

Friendfoe1 · 21/12/2023 15:39

You say Motcha? It’s Mocca as far as I know

Nopeit · 21/12/2023 15:39

It's pronounced with a K sound.

Verv · 21/12/2023 15:39

Pronounced mocka

Candycurrantbun · 21/12/2023 15:40

It's Mokka.

Friendfoe1 · 21/12/2023 15:40

Rhymes with Berocca 😂

ShakeNvacStevens · 21/12/2023 15:40

I’ve only ever heard it pronounced mokka (in England at least, other countries may vary)

Friedtofuandbeans · 21/12/2023 15:40

I say mokka - never heard it pronounced your way, sorry.

On the same theme, it is lat-ay or lar-tay? I say the former (Italian word, so surely it’s not lar-tay? but I hear it pronounced like that a lot) I’m not sure which is correct!

Lazytakeawaymum · 21/12/2023 15:43

Hahaha I’m not sure I can get on board with mokka. Feeling very embarrassed

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 21/12/2023 15:43

Lat-tay (ay is an approximation)

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 21/12/2023 15:43

It is both. Mocha is an Italian word; and in Italian "ch" is pronounced "k".So yes Italian mocha or English "mokka" is the correct pronunciation.

KirstenBlest · 21/12/2023 15:44

Mock-ah (o is slightly longer but not like in mow)

BranchGold · 21/12/2023 15:45

Mocka.

I think if I heard mo-cha I’d query if you wanted a mocka or a Matcha coffee

I was about to type this. My first thought went matcha.

NancyJoan · 21/12/2023 15:47

La-tay. Short vowel sound.

LauderSyme · 21/12/2023 15:50

It is Mokk-Ah with the emphasis on Mokk.

What do you mean when you say you pronounce it mo cha?

Is that mo rhyming with snow or mo as in moth? Is it cha as in the dance 'cha cha cha'? Or cha as in chaos? I need to know how wrong you've been getting it!

NoKateMoss · 21/12/2023 15:50

Don't beat yourself up. People still say expresso and can't pronounce ciabatta, bruschetta etc. You're not alone.

Yeah, in the US we say moe-ka.

Catza · 21/12/2023 15:51

It's named after Yemeni town Al Moka. So, pronounced with a K.

LolaJ87 · 21/12/2023 15:52

steff13 · 21/12/2023 15:51

Yeah, in the US we say moe-ka.

I'm in Ireland and say moe-ka too.

BoohooWoohoo · 21/12/2023 15:55

“Cha” makes me think of tea like matcha, chai etc

I can confirm I pronounce it as mokka

I don't think you can ever return to the M&S cafe after that 😂

It’s latt-ay with the same short vowel sound as “cat” but people try and reproduce the emphasis Italian puts on it and the closest they can get is to turn it into “lar”.

NoKateMoss · 21/12/2023 16:07

It is lat-tay. With a double beat on the t- sound.
