Disgusting cold of doom

Had a dry cough for the past week but didn't feel too unwell with it. However I had a bad night last night and woke up today feeling shocking. Sore throat, headache, soreness/heaviness behind my eyes, earache and joint pain. I just want to curl up in bed but I have a toddler and a million things to do before Christmas.

Is this the horrid illness everyone else has had recently? If so how long did it last for you and any tips to speed up recovery? I've no appetite and that won't do at all for Christmas Sad

Me too. Mild cough for a week or so but not feeling too bad, and bam last night high temp, full blown cold, achy, headache. Arghh

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 21/12/2023 08:14

Probably not helpful but the best thing you can do is rest and sleep as much as possible. I was over the worst in 5 days but it lingered for ages, and just when I'd got over it I either relapsed or came down with a new one.

LostSocksBrigade · 21/12/2023 08:15

I started like this and now I have pneumonia 😞

marychristmas22 · 21/12/2023 08:17

My body is crying out for rest, I've had such a hectic week at work with very long days and then coming home to kids commitments and Xmas prep. But there's no chance of me getting a break today, I have toddler dd on my own as dh is at work and I need to do the Xmas food shop.

I can cope with the cough it's just the aches and pains that are killing me.

I know a few people who've had pneumonia recently. It's quite worrying.

Is there any chance of your DH getting time off work so he can look after the toddler and do the shop? Honestly, you need to be in bed - the more you rest, the quicker you will get over this.

PlipPlopChoo · 21/12/2023 08:29

I have been up and down with this for a couple of days. A cough that has been painful when unproductive but when I manage to cough up phlegm it is such a relief. I went to sleep in lots of layers and got 10 hours last night.

I woke up at 7am with a headache probably due to dehydration which has eased off after taking on lots of fluid. I feel less achy and weak today so perhaps it is nearly done with me.

Probably some mutated version of covid doing the rounds. The cough has been horrid at times.

marychristmas22 · 21/12/2023 08:35

I would love a full nights sleep. Unfortunately aforementioned toddler likes to get in bed with us and often wriggles, pulls hair, chatters so there isn't much chance for rest even at night.

Dh has already set off for work and has a busy week ahead. I will cope I just don't want it to escalate into anything else before Xmas.

It's covid. I don't know why everyone's always on about some mystery cold, I mean come on.

justanotherlaura · 21/12/2023 08:43

I've been ill for 2.5 weeks now and it just won't shift! I'm 10 weeks pregnant and have a 1 year old that is ill too so sleeping around 4 hours a night. So over being ill and we're so behind with Xmas prep because we've been ill since 3rd Dec :(

Had it for a week now, no signs of shifting. I have heard rumours it can last three weeks 😔

It's covid. I don't know why everyone's always on about some mystery cold, I mean come on.

Because people are testing negative.
There have always been colds, there’s nothing out of the ordinary about there being a particularly nasty one going round just before Christmas.

Of course it’s possible that this is a strain of COVID that isn’t picked up by the tests but it’s more likely it’s just a cold like we used to have before COVID came along.

Shadow1986 · 21/12/2023 08:45

Sounds exactly what I’ve had - i tested positive for covid.

Lateral flow tests have always been unreliable with false negatives, lots of people don't test positive until day 4 or so, some not at all. I caught covid off my husband when he had it, it was obviously covid because I hadn't been anywhere else but I never tested positive myself.
Also most people aren't even testing.

marychristmas22 · 21/12/2023 09:03

It might be covid, it might not. Even if it was the outcome would be the same - ride it out and hope for the best. People don't tend to test because there are no restrictions anymore.

I started feeling poorly about 10 days ago, but I've been off work the last three days. It is horrendous! I haven't found lemsips/cold and flu tablets make a difference although I'm persevering! I haven't tested for covid, purely because my work doesn't require any test to return back. Hopefully I will be back in tomorrow for the busiest day.
What I find the worst is having to do something (make tea, wash up, put washing on etc) and all of a sudden I'm roasting hot, dizzy and feeling awful again!
Try and rest as much as you can, snuggle in on the sofa, put a Christmas film on and do your shopping one evening or early morning when it's quiet 🤫

Have a lovely Christmas 🎄

toastedcrumpetsrock · 21/12/2023 09:12

Day 5 of feeling awful for me, ds recovered after 6 days, dh had a day off work sick for the first time in 6 years- even when he had Covid he wfh through it, I can't buy paracetamol and calpol quick enough

It might not be. We all had a horrendous virus 4 or so weeks ago, sounds very similar to what OP and PP describe. I had covid in September, DH is currently positive and toddler has started snotting this morning so likely has it too. We all tested negative during the virus a few weeks ago, but DH is very much positive now (and much less ill!)

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 21/12/2023 09:28

My DH was floored y it last week. Couple of days in bed and unable to eat. I started with a headache on Saturday followed by sore throat and streaming nose. I cancelled social engagements at the weekend and taking it easy this week (still working sadly). luckily my DC are teens now so don’t need hands on care.

OP can you simplify the Christmas food shop and make short cuts? Is click and collect and option? We put too much pressure on ourselves at Christmas. I hope you feel better soon.

RedPony1 · 21/12/2023 12:15

Me too!!

Except its the busiest period at work and i still have the horses to do twice a day so rest is not optional, so taking a while to get rid of it 😔

marychristmas22 · 21/12/2023 18:42

I powered through today on coffee and McDonald's and still feel crap but have managed to at least be functional.

Had a gin and tonic about half an hour ago (don't hate, it's Christmas) and it's done nothing to me. Is this another sick symptom of the lurgy? Not being able to get drunk? Is there a medical reason why booze doesn't touch you when you've a cold?

Perhaps if you ate and drank better you might have shifted it by now.

BloodandGlitter · 21/12/2023 21:55

I'm on week 3 of it and it's finally showing signs of going away, although I did wake myself up coughing again last night.

Perhaps so 😂😂😂

Alas it's not celery I'm craving at the moment, it's carbs, stodge and escapism.
