How much is your grocery bill

Helphum · 20/12/2023 20:07

We are a family of 3. DC is toddler. Our grocery bills used to be £40/week until last year but now it's almost £80. We eat veggies & fruits mostly and one portion of fish/chicken each week. We find it unbelievable really how bills have gone up so much for grocery shopping. We mostly shopped at Lidl but even that feel very expensive.
How much were your grocery bills until last year and how much they have gone up now?

Family of four (two older teens) and a dog. Probably (including popping down the shop for anything fresh needed during the week) about £120/£140.

hopingforbabyy · 20/12/2023 20:14

£100 pw for two adults. Don’t drink or buy much meat. Includes laundry and cleaning and household items. Quite easily!! Everything’s very expensive, we used to be able to do it for 60.

Mountainhowl · 20/12/2023 20:17

Family of 4 (10&3yo) and we spend £80 most weeks but really that's only for about 5 days worth, so more like £100 weekly.

It was £50-60 a couple of years ago, even after my youngest was weaned, some of the extra cost now will be him eating more but not that much

Melodysmum12 · 20/12/2023 20:18

Two adults and one 5yo and we spend £100 a week. It’s gone from about £75.

DontGoGran · 20/12/2023 20:21

Family of three (soon to be four) here, DC is 2. Our bill is much the same as yours, used to be £45-£50, now closer to £90-100, although that's slightly inflated maybe as we're buying wipes and nappies for both babies even though one isn't here yet, to try and spread the cost a little over the last few weeks.

Scottishdreams1991 · 20/12/2023 20:24

I always wonder if people are telling the truth as we are a family of 5 3 dc under 11 and spend 300 and we dont drink or buy anything fancy 🤔

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/12/2023 20:25

Family of three with a cat. Shopping costs about £70 a week not including stuff like washing powder, toilet roll, cat litter.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 20/12/2023 20:29

2 of us and a weekly shop was about £60 last year and is nearer £90 this year.

About a third of meals are veggie. Majority are cooked from scratch with something like a charlie bigham meal at the weekend. Our shopping bill also includes things like protein yogurts, cleaning products and toiletries.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 20/12/2023 20:30

Ours is ridiculously expensive.

But we eat lots of fresh healthy foods like salmon, avocado, strawberries, blueberries, lots of veg etc which contributes.

Plus DP and DS have bottomless pits for stomachs so are constantly snacking.

Amba1998 · 20/12/2023 20:31

£90 per week ish, for 2 adults one toddler. Toddler in full time nursery and barely eats mid week evenings. This also includes top ups of toilet roll toothpaste dishwasher tabs etc

we eat meat daily. We eat out or takeaway on Friday and Saturday though

i make everything from scratch don’t use jar sauces etc

Absolute truth from me. Where do you shop? We are mainly ALDI and then to the Co-Op or Sainsburys for the odd bits. It's never anywhere near £300 and I wouldn't say we budget really. £140 includes all washing stuff and cleaning bits as well. I don't buy toiletries or dog food from the supermarket so that's the only thing that would be an add on but that's probably once a month and not a fortune.

Buttercup176 · 20/12/2023 20:31

Was £100-120 now £140-160

2 adults and two primary kids, one cat.

S72 · 20/12/2023 20:32

Family of 2. Weekly shop around £65 excluding pet food. Used to be around £40.

I think people are too ashamed to post what they actually spend when there’s someone who’s apparently feeding a family of 5 and two large dogs for £80 a week.

MightyGoldBear · 20/12/2023 20:34

Family of 5/6 (my mum lives with us but she gets half her own food) £90-£100 a week. Don't drink or smoke that includes cat food some cleaning supplies.

RandomButtons · 20/12/2023 20:35

Around £140-150 a week including toiletries and cleaning stuff. family of 4 with some complex dietary restrictions. Barely ever buy alcohol. Genuinely can’t work out how to reduce it.

CharlottePimpernel · 20/12/2023 20:37

£40 a fortnight and top up bits in between- milk, ham and baked beans (DD will only eat them from Asda and I don't do the big shop at Asda!)
Me and five year old DD.

Notimeforaname · 20/12/2023 20:39

€50-€60 per week. Two adults.

Ireolu · 20/12/2023 20:39

100/week on average. We bulk buy a fair amount. Meat and fish for 4-6 weeks bought from the butcher/fish monger is cheaper than at the supermarket. One online tesco shop a month. One big shop from costco a month. We typically need a top up shop every fortnight for milk and vegetables. Family of 3.

MadAboutThat · 20/12/2023 20:40

Family of four, two adults and two children, although eldest is away for half the week one week and three days the next week on a rotating basis.

I shop at Asda and I try to keep it between £80 and £100 a week.

That includes fresh meals for five days, with meat and fresh veg and two 'cheat' meals and I try to alternate cleaning supplies on the week where the eldest is away longer.

The only thing I don't provide is lunches for everyone, the kids have them at school, and I try to take leftovers to work. DP has lunch stuff.

We also don't buy fizzy drinks or alcohol or anything like that, but if we want something for a special occasion I can usually work it into the £100 budget.

BigGlenda · 20/12/2023 20:42

Family of four and a dog

mix of Aldi and Tesco

£180 a week including toiletries, dog food, cleaning stuff as well as food. But I absolutely do not top up. That lasts us packed lunches and dinners for a week with one day eating at my parents house.

we don’t buy anything particularly fancy but we have a few “non negotiable stuff” such as proper butter, certain shampoo etc.

Edit to add:
when we had just one DC three years ago it was £60-80 a week, but I did top up with fruit and veg from the greengrocer

PianPianPiano · 20/12/2023 20:42

£100 a week which includes 3 Gousto meals. Two adults, one primary child and two cats.

Helphum · 20/12/2023 20:45

We stopped drinking so that helps save some money on grocery bills and we do buy some fruits etc additional to the bills from our local green grocers. I don't buy toiletries in the grocery shopping as I buy that separately from Amazon etc. Hence it feels like a lot just buying groceries at £80-90 per week.

We are vegetarian and I must say it always astounds me how expensive meat/cheeses are if my mum ever asks me to pick some up for her

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 20/12/2023 20:46

About £120 for five used to be £70-£80. It would be more now but I’ve given up alcohol so that saves a tenner a weekish. Also switched mainly to Aldi, their cleaning stuff/ toiletries are cheaper than Tesco. It is just more expensive now even for basics milk, cheese, bread, pasta all up substantially not to mention meat and fish are now £££. I would say we eat well though. I’d prioritise good food over treats like going out to eat or occasional takeaways.

It is a bit depressing I work about 50 hours a week and earn decent money. Bills, petrol and food shop pretty much wipes me out.
