How much is your grocery bill

Helphum · 20/12/2023 20:07

We are a family of 3. DC is toddler. Our grocery bills used to be £40/week until last year but now it's almost £80. We eat veggies & fruits mostly and one portion of fish/chicken each week. We find it unbelievable really how bills have gone up so much for grocery shopping. We mostly shopped at Lidl but even that feel very expensive.
How much were your grocery bills until last year and how much they have gone up now?

@Pottedpalm I'll get my receipts up when I've got a minuteXmas Grin

OzziePopPop · 22/12/2023 08:22

£150-180 per week for 4 - 2 adults, 2 teens (one DS who eats for two)

CharlottePimpernel · 22/12/2023 09:29

@Pottedpalm ok. This is a £41 shop - I use ocado because the fruit and veg lasts so much longer and is better quality.
I already have a good stock of flour, rice and tinned fish/beans so this was topping up those.
I've got an allotment and every year I freeze masses of plums, soft fruit, beans, pumpkins and peas, and they last all winter.
I make all our jam and chutney and I've got enough to last till next autumn.
I don't drink alcohol or smoke which cuts down on cost.
We don't have squash or juice.
I only have meat maybe twice a month and other than £2 for ham every week DD doesn't eat meat at all.

Family of 4 & 2 cats.

I normally got to Aldi and then Tesco/Asda to get what I can't get at Aldi and it's normally between about £110-£130 a week, but then small top ups throughout the week of milk, bread etc..

It used to be under £100.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 22/12/2023 09:46

Probably about £180 per week, mostly from Tesco with Waitrose bits too (family of 4 plus a dog). That includes alcohol and toiletries. We usually get a takeaway on top of that most weeks

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 20/12/2023 20:30

Ours is ridiculously expensive.

But we eat lots of fresh healthy foods like salmon, avocado, strawberries, blueberries, lots of veg etc which contributes.

Plus DP and DS have bottomless pits for stomachs so are constantly snacking.

We are similar, £200 a week.

LaSpuddle · 22/12/2023 11:08

We spend around £600 a month. Family of 6 plus whatever extras we have round. I do two big £200 shops and the rest is fresh stuff for the other weeks plus odd bits here and there.
That keeps our cupboards quite well stocked, I can do a couple of cheaper weeks but not many as we start to run out of stuff.

Used to spend around £80 a week, that crept up to £100 then jumped to £130 and now averages £150. We can afford it but we have stopped buying organic dairy and vegetables because that just takes it a step too high.

Caspianberg · 22/12/2023 11:17

@CharlottePimpernel - but where’s all your other basics? I mean what from that list do you have for breakfast? Most people would need bread with the eggs, or oats and milk with the fruit from freezer, or yogurt etc.

We buy things like oats, rice, pasta, bread, cheese, granola, yogurt, flour, stock cubes, nuts, condiments ie mustard, in most weekly shops. Not all items every week but several always need replacing. 1 tin of tomatoes wouldn’t last us a week if we are mainly eating soups, bean dishes.

My 3 year old eats a banana every day alone. So 6-7 bananas only covers him eating them, we probably buy 15 ish a week for 3 of us

sunights · 22/12/2023 11:21

50% increase on last year.
Haven't changed where we shop. If we purchase all same quality as a year ago it's more like 80% increase!

CharlottePimpernel · 22/12/2023 11:24

@Caspianberg I did mention I've got a good store in of flour, rice etc. Milk I get from the corner shop when I need it.
Some of the things on that list I've posted are one item, some are 4/5. 5 tins of tomatoes for example!

Like I said I have a lot of produce frozen from my allotment. And I have big tubs of dried stuff which only ever needs topping up.

I make all our bread, cake, pastry etc. I've always got a big stock in of sugar. There's 4 packets of butter on the list there, and I've always got cooking oil in.

I've got a large tub of oats that I top up, DD has an apple or a banana at lunch and I have fruit I've frozen or dehydrated from what I've grown.

Edit: We have bread and jam for breakfast or porridge.

Caspianberg · 22/12/2023 11:38

@CharlottePimpernel - buy where does your stock come from? You must either buy bulk or have higher weekly when you buy? We make lots of our own bread/ cake/ and grow a lot, but it still costs to replace supplies whether that’s in weekly shop of a 20kg bulk top up

The stock in cupboard isn’t free

We probably use 2kg flour a week minimum between bread/ baking/ pizza dough etc.

Caspianberg · 22/12/2023 11:39

And milk from corner shop is still in weekly cost.

CharlottePimpernel · 22/12/2023 12:16

Of course it's not free.
But it's not a big expense in my average weekly shop.
In my first post I said I get top up bits in the week.
Baked beans, ham, milk.

The list above is typically what I spend a week on my "big shop."
About £40.

I don't buy 20kg at a time because I don't have room for it. I'm in a tiny council flat, inner city. I'm very lucky that I've got an allotment at all.

I never run out of the stuff I have in stock because I top it up every week. Couple of bags of flour, or sugar, or oil, or a sack of rice- one of these a week or when I think it's getting low.It isn't a big expense that way.
I can show you pictures of my store cupboards if you fancy Xmas Grin

pinkspeakers · 22/12/2023 12:23

£40 per week sounds incredibly low for last year!!! And a surprisingly big increase, though I know some prices have gone up a lot.

We are mostly just two adults and spend about £100 Ocado every other week. £25 veggie box alternate weeks. £15 per week milkman. So about £75-80 per week on average I think?? We're not short of money and eat very nicely but not much meat, fish. I'm always quite proud of my ability to get through the non-Ocado week using everything up!

ShortColdandGrey · 22/12/2023 12:24

Ours was about £47 thanks to my Tesco vouchers. Husband is out getting the few bits we couldn't find so will probably be about £60 in total. My fridge and cupboards are full with all the food we can't eat until Monday 😁

SevenOnTheLabel · 22/12/2023 12:44

We spend about £180 per week for 3 adults and a teen, our animals food is not included in that.

Our house has 2 meat eaters, 1 vegetarian and one vegan. Oldest is at uni so it’s usually a bit less now although I send him back with food when he comes home or send him an online shop sometimes.

indecisivewoman81 · 22/12/2023 12:59

2 adults 2 teens and 2 cats and I reckon we now spend about £140 a week mainly in Morrisons.

jammysocks · 22/12/2023 13:14

Family of 6. 2 adults, 4 kids and a cat. Can vary from £140 to £220 a week. All 4 kids have packed lunch at school. And this includes all cleaning and hygiene products and specialist cat food as he's poorly.

Used to be up to £140 a week before everything went up

Pottedpalm · 22/12/2023 19:26

@CharlottePimpernel thank you, and fair enough as the question was what do you spend on a big shop.
To get a true picture of your spending would be complicated.
