How much is your grocery bill

Helphum · 20/12/2023 20:07

We are a family of 3. DC is toddler. Our grocery bills used to be £40/week until last year but now it's almost £80. We eat veggies & fruits mostly and one portion of fish/chicken each week. We find it unbelievable really how bills have gone up so much for grocery shopping. We mostly shopped at Lidl but even that feel very expensive.
How much were your grocery bills until last year and how much they have gone up now?

2 adults, 2 teens, 1 preteen, 2 dogs and a cat. We spend 250-300 each week, including cleaning products, pet food, wine and toiletries. That’s a weekly Waitrose delivery, meat and a few other bits from the local farm shop and a couple of top-ups at the local Co-Op.

We eat out perhaps once a fortnight as a family, and at least weekly individually. Entertain fortnightly. DC all have a hot lunch provided by their schools.

BigGlenda · 20/12/2023 20:49

One thing I will say is that Aldi Organic Prosecco is a bargain and 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Doggymummar · 20/12/2023 20:49

2 of us. We spend about £200 a week in Tesco, but that includes 100 cigarettes. We have two freezers full and the cupboards are full too. Like 20 jars coffee 20 tins beans, soup tomatoes etc, meat comes from the farm monthly and is about £100 a month just chicken. I'm terrified of running out but we could go without shopping for several weeks really.

ArcticBells · 20/12/2023 20:52

One adult and two cats: all in including work lunches and wine £50-60 a week. I find this quite shocking

whirlyhead · 20/12/2023 20:53

About 200€ a week for 2 adults and several cats. Only one of us eats meat and we do a lot of cooking from scratch. Food prices have shot up in the last year in Europe.

Skyblue92 · 20/12/2023 21:01

Anything between £30 and £50 a week for three adults and 1 child. This includes fruit, veg and meat. We plan our meals each week and sometimes batch cook. We tend to shop in Aldi. We used to shop online at Asda and even then with pretty much the same as what we buy from Aldi it was never more than £60/70 a week.

stargazer02 · 20/12/2023 21:03

2 adults, 2 kids and various dietary restrictions but no alcohol and still manage £150 -£175 most weeks. Fresh fruit is a fair chunk to be fair.

I stopped bulk cooking for a while because I thought it took too much time and effort, but now I've run out of my frozen meal stash I'm realising it's far cheaper (because we snack less) and better use of time when I plan properly and freeze.

Hoglet70 · 20/12/2023 21:07

Three adults and a dog, about £200 a week including wine and dog food.

DGPP · 20/12/2023 21:11

2 adults, 3 kids, £250 a week, used to be £180

FishersGate · 20/12/2023 21:12

RandomButtons · 20/12/2023 20:33

I think people are too ashamed to post what they actually spend when there’s someone who’s apparently feeding a family of 5 and two large dogs for £80 a week.

I agree we do £160-200 a week aldi or sainsburys don't drink no pets. Including toiletries. I cannot see how anyone who proclaims to spend £70 a week then states it's healthy is telling the truth. Fruit and veg is expensive, meat is expensive so is fish

I always wonder if people are telling the truth as we are a family of 5 3 dc under 11 and spend 300 and we dont drink or buy anything fancy 🤔

300 a week?!

That is HIGH! Do you meal plan?

We have 2 adults, 1 teen and 1 preteen and for everything including snacks and household stuff, I'd think if i spent 100 I'm a week at aldi I was having a dear week.

If I have to, I can get it down to 75 quid.

I would say the opposite!

Plenty of healthy meals are cheap to make!

I honestly struggle to believe you spend that a week including snacks etc.🤔

Dacadactyl · 20/12/2023 21:17

Why? I cook everything from scratch and we don't snack much (I buy 2 x 6 packs of crisps for the kids lunches, a couple of tubes of aldi own brand pringles and 2 packs of biscuits a week)

Nope. Balanced diet of 7 portions of fruit veg, carbs protein. I don't agree. Most people post meal plans with very little fruit or veg, and substantially low calories than are needed.

A grew up in squalid conditions with no food and have health issues from childhood. I understand completely some people just cannot afford it and are struggling. But some just like virtua signalling

There seems to be some competiveness with who can spend the least.

I cook everything from scratch, not cooking from scratch doesn't always equal cheaper

mindutopia · 20/12/2023 21:20

Ours are usually about £120 a week for a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 primary age children (who snack a lot!). I think ours has actually gone down in the last year as stopped drinking alcohol and I’m more savvy about getting better value. We do still get some snacks here and there out during a week, so that doesn’t include any food bought out (though we very rarely have a meal out).

honoldbrist · 20/12/2023 21:20

At least £200 a week. Sometimes £300. Its hideous. Family of 7 (2 adjlts, 3 teens and 2 children) and there is never anything in the cupboards.

Hotgoose · 20/12/2023 21:22

Exactly the same OP, 2 adults, toddler and small dog and we struggle to keep it £80 ish most weeks and that’s without any luxuries like booze, big joints of meat or treats etc but I suppose that does include nappies and wipes for the toddler.

Dacadactyl · 20/12/2023 21:26

@FishersGate all I know is that I would struggle to spend 300 a week on food and id have to be buying free range, organic meat in an effort to bump it up to that.

We eat a lot of lentils, beans etc. At the minute, lots of carrots, swedes, parsnips etc. Lots of stews and casseroles in slow cooker.

I don't buy sliced meat...I buy the whole chicken and cook and shred it for the week. That's half the price of buying it already cut. I haven't bought chicken breasts for years...I'd buy the legs and roast and shred them etc. I'll buy beef and pork mince rather than the 5% fat beef mince and pad it out with lentils.

I use the Olio app for bread.

We're a family of 4 (DC are young teens) and it's never more than £150pw, from Sainsbury's, including loads of fresh food and some wine.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2023 21:30

Including all toiletries and cleaning stuff, for three adults (DD here half the time) and a few beers, probably about £160. More if we entertain. That covers breakfast for DH and me, lunch for me and dinner for two or three. Mixture of Waitrose and Tesco.

Food for the cats (2) probably about another £35pw - but they do have the good stuff!

CeeJay81 · 20/12/2023 21:35

Approx £120, family of 4(one child is a teenager) plus cat. Shop at Co-op(30% own brand discount) and Tesco. That includes everything.

Mum2jenny · 20/12/2023 21:38

Around £150 per week, 2 persons and 1 animal

Mine includes toiletries and one whole chicken for the week ? Between how many ? I bulk out with lentils. Still doesn't answer my question about eating the right ratios every day.

You really don't need to buy organic or free range either. Most supermarkets are similar now its just what it costs
