To think this is weird???

Hi all
I'm moving into a property on the 29th and need £2.6k to move in. (Deposit and first months rent)
I chose the 29th to move as it is payday for me every month so it will be my rent day.

The estate agent is now asking me for the money tomorrow because they will be closed over Christmas, opening on the 29th and the money has to clear. They've said I can't move in if I don't pay it tomorrow.

The issue is, I don't have the first months rent yet as I haven't been paid. I have the deposit but not the rent.
What am I meant to do?

My partner is saying to borrow money from somebody but I was not told I would need to pay this money a week in advance. I have always paid on the day I collected the keys for all rental properties.

They are saying it has to be now because they have to wait for the money to clear before I can move in and can only take card payment.

Is this normal? What can I do?

Ask your bank for a temporary overdraft?

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 20/12/2023 20:28

What do they mean they have to wait for it to clear? If you do an online payment it shows in their account pretty much straight away. Or you can tel them you'll do a chaps payment with your bank on 29th & they're guaranteed to get it same day. So yes, I think it is weird.

Mumof2teens79 · 20/12/2023 20:32

You offer to pay the deposit ahead and rent on the day.

If you choose the loan then you need to.clarify what day rent is due going forward, so you can pay this loand back on pay day...and be back on track, rather than constantly a week behind for as long as you live there

Not sure it's so odd. Their website also says that I don't pay until I move in so they surely can facilitate same day payments

Money doesn't need three days to clear, bacs is instant. Have you pointed out to them the info on their website?

CaputDraconis · 20/12/2023 20:53

BACS isn't instant. BACS is 3 days processing day 1 submission day 2 processing day 3 receipt

Faster payments are instant/within 2 hours

Speak to them about not having it until the 29th and offer to pay the deposit tomorrow with the balance to follow on the 29th. If they're concerned it won't clear on the 29th then offer to pay it in cash.

GeneCity · 20/12/2023 21:04

But you can't have the same pay day and rent day going forwards, can you? It all feels a bit too close for comfort to me.

NaughtybutNice77 · 20/12/2023 21:45

Call their bluff. If they open on 29th presumably that's the day they will give you your keys. Offer to pay cash on the day, or transfer the money so that it's cleared. Alternatively say OK I'll move in on 30th then. That's given them 3 choices all of shich are reasonable. They won't have another random tenant ready if they're closing over Xmas.

Onelifeonly · 20/12/2023 21:53

That's nonsense - it doesn't take long for money to clear these days. That's a thing of the past, surely? Could you afford a part payment now to keep them sweet if they still keep insisting?

WatershipClown · 20/12/2023 22:17

Be very careful, this is a common scam.

Someone pretends to be estate agent and asks for deposit/rent slightly earlier than expected. Check email address carefully and call the EA office to clarify.

Edinburghguy · 20/12/2023 22:19

Can you whack it on a credit card and pay that off when you get paid?

SmileyClare · 20/12/2023 22:24

This is a reputable company? Pressuring you like this at the last minute is unprofessional.

Presumably you’re meeting the estate agent to be handed the keys on the 29th?

Offer the deposit now and offer cash on the 29th with a signed receipt from them.

They won’t say No- they want a tenant in the property on the 29th.

flowerchild2000 · 20/12/2023 22:50

Surely you signed a contract, a lease, some kind of legal agreement? Defer to what you agreed to and nothing more. I'd be careful of scammers as pp said! They are getting more and more elaborate these days.

Do double check this!
