Someone in the group is insisting on a starter but they have agreed to taking responsibility. TBC.

This will all be homemade (apart from pastries in morning and ice cream) so it’s a lot of work - 2 main people doing it. A third person will likely pitch in a fair amount.

Is it a normal amount of food? First year hosting but any less would not be what my family is used to. But I’m doing a lot more homemade stuff whereas in previous years some of the snack stuff and desserts would be M and S.

That is a huge amount of food.... THe four adults here will have minimal breakfast (or none at all). Lots of champagne and a few nibbles for lunch and then turkey, roasties pigs in blankets, yorkshires, sprouts red cabbage peas broccoli and carrots plus panacotta or Pots lemon posset with raspberries at about 4pm and then feel stuffed until mid afternoon boxing day

mumedu · 20/12/2023 18:36

This sounds amazing but too much work for you.

Crumpleton · 20/12/2023 18:38

there's no way I'm forcing roast potatoes down my neck when I only like garlic ones, there's no way my kids will force Brussel sprouts or parsnips or mushy peas down their neck because I like them, they prefer broccoli and carrots or garden peas and one only eats corn. So yep, our veg menu is massive but I only cook enough for the meal and next day.

This really...
When inviting guests/family to dinner it doesn't necessarily mean that each food item will be portioned out for the exact amount that are attending...more who eats/likes which food item and portion accordingly to who eats what.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 20/12/2023 18:39

Your updated, slightly reduced menu sounds great OP.

Hope you all have a lovely time .

SleepingStandingUp · 20/12/2023 18:39

Assuming you
A. Have space to cook it / reheat it
B. People are picking what they want not having everything on their plate
I think it looks amazing

femfemlicious · 20/12/2023 18:41

Way too much work😓

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 18:42

Hope everyone has a merry and restful Xmas

Mash?! I am shook.

uclpp · 20/12/2023 18:44

I couldn’t do all that, but if someone cooked it for me I’d take a good stab at eating it all!

if you want to make it, then do so, and keep the leftovers

DinoRodney · 20/12/2023 18:44

That’s a lot of food

Bellavida99 · 20/12/2023 18:46

I’d forget pigs in blankets til main meal. Either drop cabbage or broccoli and drop either mash or dauphinoise potatoes. Dessert sounds a lot but cheeses and mince pies are just things to have in the house to eat whenever so not too many really and all of it is delicious leftovers assuming you’re around Boxing Day onwards too. It sounds yummy. Assume you’ve got nice soft drinks and beer etc too ?

We normally make a “bung it” pie with leftover veg and gravy. It is HEAVENLY. Even better than the Xmas dinner.

Ooh we made a leftovers pie last year for the first time - it was amazing.

It's called St Swithin's pie, and it's epic. (1) All the Christmas lunch savoury leftovers chopped small (2) mixed with gravy, cranberry sauce and bread sauce (3) topped with mash. And you can freeze it to have another time

Saymyname28 · 20/12/2023 18:50

Thats an absurd amount of different things to make. You don't need nibbles before a 1.30 christmas dinner, you need to be hungry enough to eat it all.

I wouldn't make an extra gravy I don't like unless it was to cater to an allergy.

Ditch the daufinoirs. And I would make ONE desert from scratch with shop bought alternatives. Don't forget cream.

Olika · 20/12/2023 18:52

@Hoiz how do you make 'Caeser Salad skewers' please?

PieAndLattes · 20/12/2023 18:53

I would simplify that right down. Serve it for lunch about 1.30pm. There is so many items for dinner that you’ll need really small portions of everything just to get them to fit on the plate. I’d go:

Roasties
Meat of your choice
Sprouts with chestnuts
Carrots
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Gravy

I don’t serve hors d’oevres at all. We have homemade vegetable soup to start and then a fancy cheesecake or apple crumble for pudding.

We normally leave the cheese and port until about 4-5pm and people help themselves if they want leftovers. My BIL is an expert stuffing maker and makes loads of exotic ones which we snack on and have for Boxing Day etc.

NextPrimeMinister · 20/12/2023 18:54

Some great ideas which I'm going to pinch. Thanks!!

FourLeggedBuckers · 20/12/2023 18:55

I don’t think there’s any doubt it’s “enough” food!

But for all those trying to adjust the menu - if the OP wants to make lots of options and probably over-cater (thus having lots of leftovers), that really is up to them. It doesn’t sound like there’s going to be kids left bored because the OP is busy in the kitchen instead of playing with them. And presumably the OP enjoys cooking, given their updates. Not everyone has the same idea of the “perfect” Christmas Day.

If you want dauphinois potatoes, OP, and you can be arsed to make them, you damn well enjoy them. It’s nobody else’s business and their opinions on your “gluttony” 🙄 shouldn’t stop you.

Bbq1 · 20/12/2023 18:56

Blimey. I'm not advocating the MN chicken or going to say i'm full after a massive salad but that's a lot of food. Sounds like you're feeding at least 12! All sounds really delicious the.

Updated

Breakfast
Pret frozen croissants
Cinnamon rolls
Coffee
Bucks Fizz

Houer D'oeuvres
Chorizo and Scallops
Salmon and Cod Roe Blinis

Main Meal
Stuffed Chicken Joint - sister will debone and stuff
Roast Potatoes
Mash
Dauphinoise Potatoes (If it were up to me I would only do dauphinoise but it’s out of my hands)
Honey Carrots
Bacon and Broccoli
Parsnips
Brussel Sprouts
Pigs in blanket
Yorkshire pudding
Onion Gravy
Plain Gravy

Dessert
Sticky Toffee Pudding and Ice cream
Xmas Pudding
Yule Log
Cheese Platter
Mince Pies

Sounds completely delicious and I’d eat it all. Happily and merrily.

Ignore the potato-denying naysayers. Enjoy!

Sadandhurt23 · 20/12/2023 19:02

Christ on a bike. All that for Christmas Day, for 5? Do they have exceptional appetites?

MichonnesBBF · 20/12/2023 19:04

Wait OP...don't go yet.
I've not had the chance to befriend you and bag an invite.😇
Will happily leave the husband and kids at home for that menu 😄

Torganer · 20/12/2023 19:15
