Posting on Aibu for traffic.

We live in a third floor flat, no balcony. For a while we’ve had a silver fish problem and so put down traps. The traps are paper with sticky glue on them - the silverfish walks over the glue, gets stuck and dies.

However, the last few times we’ve emptied the traps there have been what look like dog biscuits in the traps.

We do not have a dog, nor dog biscuits. The traps are not accessible to the kids and they wouldn’t be able to get dog biscuits from anywhere.

Could it be a mouse? Stealing dog biscuits from a neighbor? But then why would it hide them in the SF trap?

Could it be multiple SF dragging a dog biscuit and storing it there? But why in the trap that’s meant to kill them?

Some other creature? A nest of some sort?

Please Help. This is really freaking me out. Having silverfish is awful enough but the random brown balls appearing take the grossness to a new level.

Since it’s AIBU

Unreasonable: meh it’s a non issue
Reasonable: Either move or burn the building down to escape the cockamouse or whatever this is

You aren’t being unreasonable, it sounds gross. But there is no picture attached, am on the mobile site. Can you try posting it again?

NuffSaidSam · 20/12/2023 11:24

We're obviously going to need a picture.

TheGruffalochild · 20/12/2023 11:27

Here’s one, broken in half so you can see the inner texture, which looks very much like a dog biscuit. Full size is about the size of a malteaser chocolate

Baffled.

jammysocks · 20/12/2023 11:34

Set up a spy camera thingy OP. It's the only way! Then report back!!

ManateeFair · 20/12/2023 11:36

the cockamouse

Massive lol at the above.

I wish I could offer some wisdom or advice but I really can't because this is REALLY FUCKING WEIRD.

It's certainly possible that mice or rats would take dog or cat kibble/treats from another property. If you'd been finding them hidden away in a little stash in the corner of the cupboard under the stairs or something, I'd say that would definitely be it. But I think it's incredibly unlikely that they'd choose your silverfish traps as a place to store their food, and that you would only now be discovering the phantom kibble for the first time.

I hope you realise I won't rest now until this mystery has been solved. Christmas is cancelled until we get to the bottom of this.

RestlessEyesEgosBurn · 20/12/2023 11:46

You need to invite some amiable folk around over Christmas and dare someone to eat one. It's the only way.

Borrowers.

(As in the Borrowers are dropping their food while trying to escape your traps!)

grayhairdontcare · 20/12/2023 11:58

Squirrel shit ? Maybe 🤔

xILikeJamx · 20/12/2023 12:02

Put talc down on the floor around the tape thing and whatever it is will leave footprints.

My first guess from that photo would be droppings, which given the size you've mentioned is probably scarier than dog biscuits!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 20/12/2023 12:41

Droppings from the giant silverfish overlords.

Be afraid.

Oh good grief! The horror!

Surely it would be better for the OP to just burn her house down and start a new life?!

NuffSaidSam · 20/12/2023 12:45

Apparently spiders, centipedes and earwigs eat silverfish, so if it's droppings....

GrossEncountersoftheTurdKind · 20/12/2023 12:46

Christ!

I voted YANBU for that very reason!

rainbowhairchalk · 20/12/2023 12:49

Isn't that the food for the silverfish? We have a lump of it in ours which is meant to attract them to walk over the glue

CaroleSinger · 20/12/2023 12:57

I agree. It's the bait they put in the trap.

2jacqi · 20/12/2023 13:22

looks a bit like rat droppings!! especially the size they are!

TheGruffalochild · 20/12/2023 16:15

well I feel like a real Wally now. Rang my dh and apparently he’s been putting SF food in the traps to encourage them in.

They are ones with hormones to attract them. They don’t need bloody feeding lol

Caerulea · 20/12/2023 16:19

You can buy silverfish food?? I actually love them, like tiny, wiggly mercury teardrops.

SoftandQuiet · 20/12/2023 16:27

😂

EverySporkIsSacred · 20/12/2023 16:43

Ohhh but I wanted it to be the Giant Silverfish Overlord!

ManateeFair · 20/12/2023 16:46

WOT NO COCKAMOUSE?

I, for one, am disappointed.
