So there was an Xmas lunch provided on site where I work today. When booking you were asked if you are vegetarian or vegan .

But there was very little veg options. The soup was chicken. The starter was scotch eggs or prawn balls or lamb koftas. There were plain tomatoes and cucumber and some undressed lettuce so I had a bit of that.

The Main course was turkey and the works. I was pointed to some very dried out jacket potatoes and baked beans. There was some
Cheddar cheese I guess for vegetarians.

For dessert I had a bit of watermelon.

Aibu that this was very bad form for
Vegans and vegetarians???!!!!

That's dreadful!

Ceci03 · 19/12/2023 18:49

Ps I did ask about the accompanying vegetables to the turkey but they had been dressed with butter so

That’s awful, are they not a very modern work place?

BlueberryVelvet · 19/12/2023 18:50

YABU, veganism is a dietary choice.

I say this as someone who eats 99% carnivore. I don’t expect people to cater for my dietary choices.

Coeliac etc is wholly different

whateveryousay · 19/12/2023 18:51

I am going to guess you work in a school.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 19/12/2023 18:51

Did you have to pay for this?

If you're an ethical vegan, it's an ethical decision not just someone being fussy. Are you going to say a Muslim is being choosy for not wanting to eat pork?

That's appalling, OP, it's definitely not unreasonable to expect something decent to eat.

Spendonsend · 19/12/2023 18:56

Thats rubbish.
It doesnt matter that vegan/vegetarianism is a choice. Eating meat is also a choice. Why does that choice get special treatment when a meal option of vegan is offered.
It makes more sense to do a fab vegan meal and have a bowl of meat to add to it.

Always one 😳 on every thread

Where you the dickhead caterer at OPs site?

roarrfeckingroar · 19/12/2023 18:59

Well, serves you right for having such a restrictive diet. No one forced you to be vegan.

This is a goady troll so we've removed their posts.

Overthebow · 19/12/2023 19:01

That’s really bad. Especially as it’s easy to do a roast that’s mainly vegan so could have just done one meal for everyone with the option of meat or alternative to add to it.

Justfinking · 19/12/2023 19:01

It's so hard to organise things and accommodate everyone. Next time I suggest you take a packed lunch (as a back up), and offer to organise the food that way you can ensure there are good options to suit your needs

MissHoollie · 19/12/2023 19:03

Kind of weird to have 3 starter options none veggie and only 1 main course

HangingOver · 19/12/2023 19:03

No it's a protected characteristic. Should be treated the same as religious dietary requirements.

pointythings · 19/12/2023 19:04

Some real twats on this thread already. I mean, I eat meat, but when I have people round who are vegan or vegetarian, I cater for that. It isn't rocket science - meat eaters can eat vegan or vegetarian food and it's perfectly easy to make something everyone will enjoy.

roarrfeckingroar · 19/12/2023 19:04

@HangingOver is it really? Surely not?

It's one meal OP and your diet is a choice. It's not the end of the world.

mdinbc · 19/12/2023 19:06

Since you were asked for your dietary preference, and the results were very limited, I would quietly speak with whoever organized the lunch. They most likely just sent a message to the caterers with the numbers. Perhaps next year you could offer yourself to help organize the lunch.

HangingOver · 19/12/2023 19:06

Also a roast is easy to adapt. A few portions of nut roast, keep the butter off the veg, or have some little packets on the side, and make the gravy vegan (which loads of stock cubes are anyway). No drama.

Christmasbrie · 19/12/2023 19:06

It depends where you work really, if it's somewhere like a school where there's a very limited ɓudget and contracted caterers then it's less likely to be an active choice to exclude you, if it was food brought in and the company just wasn't bothered about catering for you then that's different. I'm vegan and have found options tend to be miles better than they were even a few years ago, it's a shame you had a pathetic offering!

ticketstickets · 19/12/2023 19:06

You were led to expect there would be a vegan option available, thats really bad form of them.

Not hard to have ONE vegan starter, a soup, etc.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 19/12/2023 19:06

That is really poor!

Poorlymumma · 19/12/2023 19:06

It sounds a very strange Christmas meal including the non veggie starters.

I wouldn't actually mind a jacket potato and salad for lunch but it's not very christmassy.
And to cover all the vegetables in butter is weird too.

maddiemookins16mum · 19/12/2023 19:08

I could never be Vegan, I love my food too much. But that is a very poor show on the part of the organisers.

wejammin · 19/12/2023 19:08

I'm vegan and allergic to dairy, and I always assume my meal is going to be crap. Occasionally I'm pleasantly surprised.
It's ridiculous to me that people can be so bad at cooking or lacking in imagination that they cannot cook a balanced and tasty meal from the multitude of plants, nuts, pulses, spices and grains we have access to, but there we are, unfortunately.
