So there was an Xmas lunch provided on site where I work today. When booking you were asked if you are vegetarian or vegan .

But there was very little veg options. The soup was chicken. The starter was scotch eggs or prawn balls or lamb koftas. There were plain tomatoes and cucumber and some undressed lettuce so I had a bit of that.

The Main course was turkey and the works. I was pointed to some very dried out jacket potatoes and baked beans. There was some
Cheddar cheese I guess for vegetarians.

For dessert I had a bit of watermelon.

Aibu that this was very bad form for
Vegans and vegetarians???!!!!

@Pipistrellus Agreed. For carnivores.

I mean some people follow a carnivore diet

PasDevantLesElephants · 19/12/2023 21:33

@pipistrelle They might like to claim they do. Only those that enjoy scurvy and/or an impacted colon would actually do so.

cariadlet · 19/12/2023 21:35

That's rubbish. I work in a school and we had our Christmas dinner last week (staff eating with the children).

There was a form for staff to fill in in advance with dietary requirements. Our lovely kitchen team catered for veggies, vegans and allergies.

I'm vegan and had a roast dinner for main and Christmas pudding and vegan ice-cream for dessert.

If you can't cater for specific dietary requirements, then don't ask if people have them.

Motherrr · 19/12/2023 21:41

In this day and age when there are so many vegan options that is just lazy!

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 19/12/2023 21:44

That's so odd... why make the vegetables not vegan FFS?! As others have said it makes far more sense to do everything veggie/vegan and just add the meat for those who eat it.

YABU, veganism is a dietary choice.

I say this as someone who eats 99% carnivore. I don’t expect people to cater for my dietary choices.

Coeliac etc is wholly different

Actually, veganism is classed as a philosophical belief that is protected by law against discrimination, in much the same way that sex, race and disability is.

If someone or somewhere can cater for allergies or religious beliefs (as they should) then they should cater for veganism too. It's not that hard!

No it's a protected characteristic. Should be treated the same as religious dietary requirements.

A protected characteristic??
Don’t be daft 🙄

You know that scurvy is a vitamin c deficiency and there is more than sufficient vitamin c in meats like beef liver. Personally I think a carnivore diet sounds grim but plenty of people live it and on balance it's probably better for the environment and causes less animal deaths than veganism if the carnivore eats whole large animals.

narkyspirit · 19/12/2023 21:51

the question would be how many people for the lunch?

How many Vegetarian? How many Vegan?

I’ve eaten a lot of vegan food, a lot of it is nice enough, but you can’t compete with real butter or cheese in a dish, you just can’t.

I agreed that they should have done better, that wasn’t a vegan bash, but more of a don’t think that all chefs relish the idea of having to come up with an exciting vegan menu. After you stating rather patronisingly that you felt sorry for the chefs who aren't creative enough to come up with exciting vegan options.

You’ve not tried ALL the vegan butters & ALL the vegan cheeses though, have you? Just like you haven’t tried ALL the pork sausages & ALL fish. You’ll prefer some more than others. Just because you haven’t experienced good vegan cheeze or butter doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. You can still make perfectly buttery naan bread with decent vegan butter - you really wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

Yep, I do feel sorry for the chefs who either lack the imagination or the enthusiasm to try & make new dishes. It just seems a bit vanilla to not want to try new things, keep developing your skills & experiences, don’t you think? Imagine going to work every day & doing the same thing day in, day out, when you have the opportunity to be really creative, why wouldn’t you?

Obviously I haven’t tried them all 😂. Of the many I’ve tried, some are meh, some are nice enough. None have tasted the same. If you’ve been vegan for a while they probably taste wonderful, but not the same as the real thing.

it was the self importance to n the first post that got me. That’s all.

PasDevantLesElephants · 20/12/2023 07:36

@alittleprivacy Thanks for the explanation of scurvy, but it is a fairly frequent issue as people don't correctly seek the Vit C out. If it can happen to James Blunt it can happen to anyone!!

On your second point, I don't believe it simply because you're adding in an complex extra step between sun-plant-consumption and you have to take into account the environmental impact of all the food consumed by the animal from birth to death, but it's not my really my area of expertise. Doesn't sound like yours either.

underneaththeash · 20/12/2023 07:41

HangingOver · 19/12/2023 19:09

is it really? Surely not?

Yes ethical veganism is a protected characteristic. Why not? If religious beliefs around diet are protected then logically veganism should be too. It's a philosophical stance.

The was a court case and luckily it isn't.

It's unhealthy and unnatural and if you chose to restrict your diet that way you're going to end up with generally crap food.

dooneyousmugelf · 20/12/2023 07:53

It's hilarious to me the amount of people who think most things other than meat and it's produce equals 'crap food' or 'restricted diet'. It's the other way round in most cases I've seen IRL

hahah yes OBVIOUSLY you haven’t tried them all, that was the OBVIOUS point.

Your initial observation was correct though, I AM a Very Important Person.

This is my experience as well.

Before I was vegan I would say I had a very limited diet. I pretty much lived on Greggs sausage rolls, chicken nuggets and baked potatoes or pasta with tuna mayo.

Since going vegan however I have definitely become far more creative in my food choices and love cooking and trying new things.

I have a family member whose diet consists of cigarettes and black coffee with the occasional McDonalds chicken nugget and pot noodle thrown in. I highly doubt they even know what a vegetable looks like. She also feeds her child nothing but junk food and takeaways and made fun of him when he wanted to try an apple.

Said family member will also tell everyone and anyone about how I am abusing my DS because I feed him a ‘restricted diet’ of home cooked food and vegetables. DS is not a vegan but because I do pretty much all the cooking he does not eat meat every day and eats a mostly plant based diet (he is thriving and perfectly healthy thanks).

I told my mum how I had been to my local vegan cafe and one of their specials for that week was a vegan Christmas dinner. Miss Coffee and Cigarettes heard about this and promptly informed my mum that I clearly had an eating disorder and she should get my help. Okay Miss Coffee and Cigarettes, projecting much 😂

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 20/12/2023 12:35

*get me help.

And no Miss Coffee and Cigarettes had nothing negative to say about my diet before I went vegan and Greggs was considered a regular meal for me. Weird that.

99% carnivore sounds very unhealthy.
