Why can’t I get rid of this??

I have had a horrendous cold for 10 days. No let up. Not got any better at all in any way. Went to doctors on day 8 to be told it must be viral.

I am usually quite robust and get over a cold fast but this is on another level. Why aren’t I feeling even a tiny bit better? I had the flu jab so isn’t actually flu but I feel so so unwell!

The jab won’t stop you getting the flu if the vaccine doesn’t cover the strain you have.

@MooseBeTimeForSnow i am not convinced it is flu though, I am able to function and don’t have a temperature. I can’t stop coughing and my throat has been on fire for over a week, nothing helps at all 😩

Sounds more like a throat infection. I had one in summer that needed antibiotics but no one checked my throat until my third GP visit. Hope you feel better soon.

Covid/long covid?

@pinguins i did have my throat checked and they said it was viral. I haven’t felt so horrific in a very long time, exhausted with a toddler

Gargle with salt water as much as you can and that will reduce the inflammation in your throat but you do have to do it a lot. I can deal with anything except a sore throat & I swear by this. Good luck & u hope you feel better soon.

Honestly so many bugs going around at the moment. I've had mine 3 weeks and it's turned into pneumonia. My son has severe tonsillitis. Both of us are on antibiotics.

Practically all the students and teachers at my childs school have a cough / cold etc.

Ditto , Had it for about the same time and I too don't tend to get viruses because I spend so much time outside. Went to the docs because I have had pneumonia before and my chest was hurting to be told "what do want me to do ? It's a virus everyone's got it ".

So back to lemsips and bronco stop then . Cheers .

Hate to tell you this but I am about to hit week 4 of this gets better for a couple of days then comes back also got told it was viral, tried every over the counter medicine even alcohol won't kill it, hope you feel better soon

There are loads of bugs like this going round at the moment. It took me about a month to feel better when I got it.

We had these horrendous coughs and colds. Nothing shifted it until desperation and we upped veg, hot lemon drinks and had no sugar and no processed food for a few days.
The key is to reduce inflammation in your body.

OP you do know flu constantly evolves and the jab only targets 1 or 2 main strains expect to be the major strain of the year right? You can absoloutly get flu after a flu jab.

10 days is not really that long for a cold, most colds have symptoms that last up to 3 weeks (while still being within 'normal' range).

@housethatbuiltme thanks. It’s mainly the headache and sore throat. Can’t work properly or look after dc. It’s constant and quite bad pain even after paracetamol. I know it sounds like nothing but it’s making me feel horrendous now, can’t sort the house or anything practical as I’m exhausted after any small thing

It actually sounds like the covid we are trying to get over.

Yep DS7 has had very similar and he hardly ever even gets a sniffle.
He was really poorly for a full two weeks, I was starting to get a bit concerned about him but he's getting over it now (and kindly passed it to me 😊)

I had this a few years ago, went to the GP multiple times only to be told I had a virus. Couple of weeks later ended up in A&E with an abscess on my tonsils. Turns out I had undiagnosed tonsillitis. Most painful few weeks of my life!

I've also had a sinus infection which was awful, and this led to a sore throat due to the postnasal drip (gross). If you sit down and put your head between your legs, is the headache worse? If you have a sinus infection you will normally feel a lot of pressure and pain at the front of your face if you do this position.

Tips:

• keep pushing to go to doctor and get throat or sinuses checked properly.
• ice lollies are fantastic for keeping throat numb for a few minutes
• Nap/rest as much as you can
• Over the counter throat lozenges/sweets help - get the highest strength possible
• Max out on Paracetamol and Ibuprofen
• Vaporub on chest

@WonderingAboutBabies thank you! I’ve been wondering whether to go back to the gp? I literally feel just a bad as a week ago. It’s definitely sinus related. I don’t know how I am going to manage again tonight with dc. I am so exhausted from no sleep with coughing.

Try to stay hydrated, if you are mucus-y you will be losing fluid. Pressure from the sinus is also probably a big player in your head ache.

You could try Psudophedrine.

Most people don't realize that the BRAND named 'Sudafed' that you can pick up off the shelf in shops does not actually have Psudophedrine in anymore (as it is used in illegal drug abuse) just paracetemol and generic cold medication.

You can speak to a pharmacist and be prescribe the real one if they approve you.

There’s a lot of it about. Have you done a covid test?

I know of 5 people currently who had what they thought was a bad cold, which got worse instead of better and when tested, they were positive for covid.
