What do you tip your bin men?

Inspired by a podcast I'm listening to... wondering whether people tip their binmen and if so what with? My mum leaves beer out for them. Some people I know give cash. What do you give and how much?

Nope and technically I know they are not allowed to accept to gifts either. If caught as the trucks have cameras they can get a disciplinary over it.

I only know this as I know the boss of the local rubbish and fly tipping and bulky waste collections department.

Really??? DH has been a binman for 17 years, it's never been mentioned or written in his contracts that they cant accept gratuities.

BlochAndRoll · 17/12/2023 18:00

I treat them all year round by always putting my bins in the specified range of +/- 1.46cm from the coordinates specified to ensure collection. In return some of them wave back when DC waves at them, and others frequently fling the inner paper recycling basket as far as their strength allows making it easier for unknown neighbours to fucking nick it replace their own lost inserts. It's a lovely reciprocal arrangement ❤️

Nothing, they leave my bins behind my car every bloody bin day when rhere is plenty of space not to block my car in or out!

Mine will leave the bins blocking the drive while I'm out. So I have to leave the car in the middle of road to move them. It's disproportionally annoying!

Teddleshon · 17/12/2023 18:02

£30 for postie and £30 for bin men - I thought this was normal!

£20 to the crew, and yes I sprint out in my pjs if needed.

Its a grim job done outside all year for minimum wage. And it's quite personal, they are taking my crap and dealing with it. Also it's traditional. A bit of Christmas goodwill here and there is fine with me.

I don’t know where you are but the loaders get over £13 ph driver closer to £15ph. I’m not disagreeing it’s a hard job. Part of my training at the council was spending 3 days loading bin lorries. It’s not minimum wage though.

Bloody hell, you must have a lot of spare cash floating around Grin

Prangle · 17/12/2023 18:05

Ridiculous, they’re literally just doing their job - that they’re paid to do. Do you also tip the cashier at Tesco? The GP? Etc

Ambi · 17/12/2023 18:07

I have a blanket zero tip policy.

I suppose if someone else was providing me with a weekly service which was a hard job and for which they were abused I might tip them also?

Do you tip retail workers then? Behind the scenes in a supermarket is a cold and grubby job and the workers there (often young people) are being abused more regularly than your average refuse collector.

Olika · 17/12/2023 18:07

Didn't even know this was a thing

I think it’s more akin to tipping the hairdresser or waiter who provides good service. It’s not mandatory but £20 buys a lot of year round good will.

They get paid well above minimum wage.

KnittedCardi · 17/12/2023 18:10

It's a throwback to the days when the guys used to come up to your gate, lift the lid of your bin, empty the bin by hand, and lug heavy dirty bags back to the lorry, all for very little pay.

Now it is a fairly well paid, above minimum wage, needing no qualifications, or English language, fully automated process, with wheeled bins, uploaded by machine. They also get bonuses for bank holiday and meeting targets.

Don't get me wrong, they are always very helpful, and the guys at the dump are lovely, but it is nowhere near as grim a job as it used to be.

Floralnomad · 17/12/2023 18:11

We have 3 different lots of binmen and they are without exception annoying . They park opposite my drive to have their breaks which makes it difficult to get off my drive but they all just sit in their trucks watching me do a 7 point turn rather than move forward 6 feet . Then they leave all the empty bins in the middle of the drive so you have to get out and move it before you can put the car in whereas they could leave them on the path . They get nothing from me . We don’t have a regular postie anymore so no tip there .

birthdayday · 17/12/2023 18:19

I don't think anyone should be tipping anyone.
American companies need to start paying their employees and stop exporting their tipping culture.

TortolaParadise · 17/12/2023 18:22

I remember the 80'swhen the bin crew were a jolly team; the whole street acknowledged them at Christmas in their own way... hip flask, biscuits, cup of tea... simple time, good times.

SirenSays · 17/12/2023 18:25

I try to tip everyone at this time of year. Postie, bin men, amazon drivers... they're always polite and grateful.

Angrywife · 17/12/2023 18:26

Why would you tip them 🫤

WashItTomorrow · 17/12/2023 18:36

I’ve never done this. They earn more than me.

Coconutter24 · 17/12/2023 18:37

I’ve never tipped a bin man. They are doing their job which they get paid for plus every week they take my bin off the gravelled area that is out front and to the side of my drive, empty my bin then put it right in the middle of the driveway entrance so when I return I have to stop park up and get out the car move the bin then get back in the car to put it on the drive. Small thing but it’s inconveniencing me and they walk over the gravel anyway to get to the next house

I remember the days when they used to carry the metal bins to the lorries and empty them. No bin bags, stuff went straight in the bin. Can you imagine that these days?

AllAroundMyCat · 17/12/2023 18:40

A tub of Heroes or a six pack of beers.

Notsurehwhattdo · 17/12/2023 18:49

As Rory Keane says, that's his job.

Dunnoburt · 17/12/2023 18:51

Charity began at home about a year ago.....they get paid more than me!....I literally couldn't afford to tip the bin men.....
