What do you tip your bin men?

Inspired by a podcast I'm listening to... wondering whether people tip their binmen and if so what with? My mum leaves beer out for them. Some people I know give cash. What do you give and how much?

OP posts:

The only tip I'd give them is "do the job properly and pick up all the rubbish".

Dacadactyl · 17/12/2023 16:53

I don't tip them, altho I have always found them to be helpful if I run down the drive with an extra bin liner to throw on the truck.

Peakypolly · 17/12/2023 16:54

I leave a tin of biscuits on the wheelie bin, used to be cans of beer but you can never be sure if everyone drinks.
£20 for the postman, he is a gent.

MujeresLibres · 17/12/2023 16:55

Either a box of biscuits or something like a tub of Heroes.

DitheringBlidiot · 17/12/2023 16:55

Nothing

Erby · 17/12/2023 16:56

I give the same amount in tips as I receive, ie squat.

Giggorata · 17/12/2023 16:56

I used to tip them when we had the same team and only one bin.
Now we have 4 bins, with billions of bin men that we don't know.
When we asked them about it, they said they weren’t allowed to accept tips any longer, anyway.

We tip our postie.

Lilithlogic · 17/12/2023 16:57

The only tip I'm giving is for the gobby scouser to shut the heck up when he is yelling about things nothing to do with the bins at 7am in the morning. I love the scouse accent but his is like nails on a blackboard and unbelievably load.

Cotswoldbee · 17/12/2023 16:57

My M&D used to tip the binmen, postie & milkman but stopped doing it in the 1980's when random staff were put onto a round.
We were tipping our postie up until when we moved a couple of years ago as it was a village and we knew the postie and he would always stop for a chat.

youveturnedupwelldone · 17/12/2023 16:57

Our bin men seem to be on strike more often than they are out collecting the rubbish!

Wouldn't occur to me to tip them.

catwithflowers · 17/12/2023 16:58

Nothing for bin men but tip our lovely postie £20. He is fab and leaves our numerous parcels safely for us in our shed, is lovely with our dog, always cheerful and friendly.

Whiskerson · 17/12/2023 16:58

What do I what my what?!

margotrose · 17/12/2023 16:59

Nothing. They don't even show up half the time and when they do, the bins don't get emptied properly.

Fluffypuppy1 · 17/12/2023 17:01

Nothing. We have different lorries for general waste, cardboard/paper, plastic and metal, glass, garden waste and also food waste. They all call around at different times of the day too so tipping would be difficult.

Also, the general waste ones are very fond of blocking my driveway by leaving the empty bins right in the middle so I can’t drive out.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 17/12/2023 17:01

10 in a card saying thanks to all the team. They are so friendly when i see them and have often taken away some larger items for us. Same with milk man and newspaper delivery guy. I used to have a lovely post woman but don't know her replacement so forgot about them this year. This has reminded me so another 10 for them.

Its absolutely not something people should feel obliged to do though, especially if finances are tight.

gingercat02 · 17/12/2023 17:05

I don't! They come when we are at work.

I don't tip anyone.
At Christmas, the hair salon gets a bottle of fizz and some chocs. Cleaner gets a weeks pay in cash as a bonus in a card. I tip in a restaurant as I feel appropriate.
That's it tight arse

The only tip I'd give them is "do the job properly and pick up all the rubbish".

Agree, I used to tip them until they stopped doing their job properly and pissed me off. I do tip the postie because he goes above and beyond and we are on first name terms

Iceache · 17/12/2023 17:06

Nothing. Same as I don’t tip anyone else - except for exceptional waiting staff in restaurants. I don’t feel the least bit guilty about it either

Perfectlystill · 17/12/2023 17:07

£30 or booze

avemariiiiiaaaa · 17/12/2023 17:10

Nothing?

I don't tip anybody.

We have a living/minimum wage which ensures everyone has a basic standard of living (I know it's shit, because I earn this myself).

Nobody tips me in my job and I can't afford to fritter money away tipping everyone that does a particular type of job.

gerispringer · 17/12/2023 17:11

A box of Heroes or Celebrations on each of the 3 different bins for the crews to share . £10 plus some chocs for each of the 3 posties we have. All good.

vanillaredbushtea · 17/12/2023 17:11

Nothing I've had to pay for 2 replacement boxes this year coz they keep smashing them up

MrsMitford3 · 17/12/2023 17:11

I tip £20 in an envelope to the team. The bins and the recycling collectors.
It's not much once they share it out but I appreciate the job they do.

But sadly I have to put a note on the bin for them to knock for the card because ppl go round stealing the cards on the bins.

My bin collectors always look after us and I am grateful for them-I could never do it!

Iwantmyoldnameback · 17/12/2023 17:12

A box of Heroes left out for them. Tin of biscuits for the GP surgery and £20 for the postie.
I always tip hairdresser so nothing more for him.

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 17/12/2023 17:13

Nothing. We never see them - have to take the bins off the little estate (unadopted road) and to a collection area. They then leave the bins strewn about over the pavement so you have to step into the road to get past.
