What do you tip your bin men?

Inspired by a podcast I'm listening to... wondering whether people tip their binmen and if so what with? My mum leaves beer out for them. Some people I know give cash. What do you give and how much?

Multipack of mars bars for the bin crew and recycling crew approx once a year

happyinherts · 17/12/2023 17:13

Used to, but they did make it clear that they were not to accept financial or edible gifts at all, and would face disciplinary proceedings if they did. Not sure how anyone would know - it does seem a bit mean. The last notification of changes to Christmas schedules did say not to give tips.

Papyrophile · 17/12/2023 17:14

I/We do a Christmas card with £10 in it for the binmen and the same for the recycling team, who are mostly pretty stable crews, and £20 for our superb postie.

Teenangels · 17/12/2023 17:15

I tip them £30 each and I have found that whatever I leave for them gets taken away, my neighbour on the other hand does not tip them and they are very strict with what they collect from them.

hot2trotter · 17/12/2023 17:15

Nothing. They do bare minimum and can never manage to put my bin back where they got it from. They've also broke it more than once and I've had to fork out for a new one through no fault of my own!!

ichundich · 17/12/2023 17:17

Nothing. We pay council tax for our bins to be emptied. Will soon get charged extra for garden waste, which the council will sell on as 'soil improver'.

Ilovesshopping · 17/12/2023 17:18

Always leave some beer and chocolates for them. They do a crap job for low pay, and in all weathers.
@OhmygodDont Are they really not supposed to accept gifts? That’s seems unfair. I bet local councillors get plenty of gifts.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/12/2023 17:18

I don’t see mine because I have to drag my bins down the street 50metres.

Kimmeridge · 17/12/2023 17:20

Why on earth would you tip the binmen. Honestly where does it stop. They're doing the job they're paid for. It's nothing like it used to be where they came round the back of your house lifted the bin emptied it and returned it.

Now if your bin isn't out, handles facing the right way with the lid fully down then they won't clip it into the lorry. If they do they then dump your bin randomly in the street. My mums neighbours have to go out after the glass recycling to sweep up the stuff they've dropped.

Giving them a Christmas tip will make them think the poor job they do is actually satisfactory. Oh & they're the most unpleasant folk too

Dontcallmescarface · 17/12/2023 17:21

Nothing as half the time the buggers don't turn up.

fingerguns · 17/12/2023 17:21

We'd tip the binmen, postman and paperboy back in 90s, but nothing since.

ANightingale · 17/12/2023 17:22

We don't - they probably earn more than we do.

sensationalsally · 17/12/2023 17:23

Nope. They get paid a wage to do their job. Same as me.

LinneM · 17/12/2023 17:24

Benibidibici · 17/12/2023 16:43

I have never tipped a bin man and don't know anyone who does. I also do not tip hairdressers etc. They are free to set their price and i expect them to set a price they are happy with.

The uk doesnt really have consistent tipping expectations. Its not like the US where service employees can be paid as little as $7.25 (only £5.70) an hour and tipping is expected to make up the rest of the pay. UK staff receive a minimum wage intended to be full remuneration.

There's a trend for service people to ask for tips now, with card machines offering it as an option, but i don't know many people who routinely do this.

I dislike tipping culture. I prefer to pay a price knowing it includes good service as standard.

Yep, yep and yep!

RichardMarxisinnocent · 17/12/2023 17:25

Nothing. They come before I get up in the morning, so I've never seen them, let alone spoken to them.

Awumminnscotland · 17/12/2023 17:26

We give a box of sweets and last year a box of lager too. We're tight this year though so it'll be a box of sweets if anything. They do a great job are part of the community and always go the extra mile for us. They've had our daughter in the cab letting her push buttons etc as she was until this year obsessed with the bin truck. They also leave our bins half way down our steps towards our door not half way down the street. It's appreciated.
No they're strictly not meant to accept gifts as the work for the local authority but I guess that's the same as teachers who work for the local authority.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/12/2023 17:26

I don't tip anyone any more. My hair costs a fortune and I usually end up buying a mask to keep the colour or the shampoo and conditioner. I felt bad last week as I went and I took dd and booked her in for a cut which only cost £25-apparently over 5 they charge for an adult cut so it should have been £55 and I didn't take a card or present for my hairdresser but tbh I could dye my hair myself and not pay £110 for it every 10 weeks. My nails I also don't tip as I pay £30. Bin men and postman also no. I pay loads of money in council tax

Hottenan · 17/12/2023 17:27

Ours been on strike for weeks so they can fuck right off.

Ostryga · 17/12/2023 17:28

Binmen get a big crate of beer on the last round before Xmas. They drink it at the depot apparently! Postie gets £20 because I order a lot of stuff and he will always, always put them somewhere safe and sign them for me so I don’t have to rearrange delivery. Lifesaver!

Window cleaner gets a Costa voucher and I get my cleaner a hamper of whatever she likes or a SpaceNK voucher.

TiredOfYourNonsense · 17/12/2023 17:29

Icepop79 · 17/12/2023 16:33

Never crossed my mind to tip them. I have no idea how many there are, or if they’re the same ones each week. Just like I don’t tip all the other people I come across doing their job.

This.

I don't tip anyone any more. I used to tip the postman, but it seems to be a different person every week

FestiveAuntFanny · 17/12/2023 17:31

We give them 20, they actually come round door to door on their best (clean) uniforms

Ours are amazing they came on Christmas Day one year, and never complain about our overstuffed bins.

Mumof2teens79 · 17/12/2023 17:31

I know it used to be a thing but I never see them....not like you used to when I was a kid and you knew the names of the 3 guys on the lorry. Now there are 6bor 7 of them, probably different every time..somedays we put 3 bins out so I assume theltas 3 different crews?
They don't do a particularly stand out job either.
So no I don't tip

GatoradeMeBitch · 17/12/2023 17:31

I have always given a tenner because ours are pretty good, on the rare occasion we forget to put the bin out they collect it anyway. But the only way I can do it this year is to tape a card to the bin lid and I don't trust it to stay there if creepy neighbour two doors down notices it.

Also which crew do you tip? Main bin, recycling bin, or food bin? I assume the default is main bin, but what if some of the collectors do food bin every week?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/12/2023 17:31

£20 binmen
£10 postman

mygrandchildrenrock · 17/12/2023 17:33

mambojambodothetango · 17/12/2023 16:43

How do you give it? Do you run outside in your pjs at 7am? Or do you put it out for them and hope a ne'er-do-well doesn't make off with it? I do give the cleaners and window cleaner a Xmas tip but they come in/come to the door.

Yes, that’s exactly what I do but I’m in my nightie, as I don’t wear pjs! I am quite old and have always tipped bin men, for over 40 years.
