american bragging christmas cards

We got the annual christmas card from an american acquaintance. I say acquaintance as they are a friend of a friend and we couldn't care less.

What is it though with this American trend of bragging every christmas? Its like competitive parenting. This card is full of "my beauty business is doing SO well this year, little johnny really loves his music and has a future as an aspiring musician, little janey does cheerleading practice 3 times a week, she's so dedicated" and so on.

AIBU to think, this is a stupid tradition?

Also, I think if we have time, we should send one back full of stupid shit. Can I have suggestions of what to say?

My parents - who are British- have done these letters and received these letters for years. They know loads of people through dad's work and it was a time before you followed people on SM. They still don't for most of them.

It's fascinating find out how so many of their acquaintances go on yearly exotic holidays and offspring go to top schools and universities. Most of the letters are also from British people

Not every American sends Christmas newsletters and in fact I've seen Brits send them out as well. I suppose these newsletters are like Marmite. You either love or hate them.

There is a movie on Netflix about Christmas newsletters. It's called Best. Christmas. Ever! with Heather Graham, Brandy and Jason Biggs. Heather Graham finds the Christmas newsletters that Brandy sends about her family cringey. I have a soft spot for Christmas movies so I definitely watched it.

This film sounds AMAZING.

How is an actual picture not personal? 🤣

Sorry, that came out wrong, I meant more
that there isn’t any personal message at all, not that a photo isn’t personal. I agree with you @phoenixrosehere that these are actually quite nice and preferable to random cards.

Does anyone send a Christmas update saying DC in young offenders and other DC is a drug addict? Sending boasting letters is utterly the preserve of the “aren’t we doing well” brigade.

Think I'll give that film a watch!

I'm aware of the Janet and Roy threads but as I've said, its always been Americans who send them.

The card I mentioned, was from an American I only met once, hence calling her an aquaintance. Why she thinks I'd care about her life, I don't know. Why she feels the need to add a picture of her family inside a christmas bauble, I don't know. Its very cringe.

DH suggested sending a letter back announcing that little danny has found his willy and plays with it regularly, we are so proud.

I guess if they can say we are all lazy cooks and spend our time bragging, just a couple of the things I’ve seen lately, I can say that Scottish people are tight with their money, alcoholics, drug addicts and missing lots of teeth. 😊

@TheBraves oi! Why pick on the Scots? Xmas Angry Most of MN is English based.

And actually most Scots I know are ok with Americans (and even more so Canadians) because of the history of emigration and people wanting to find links back to their Celtic ancestors. Even if sometimes they mixed up Scots and Irish Wink

I loved being in America and loved being asked to say something "Scottish" Xmas Grin

I look forward to my American friends braggy letter. They're fun.
We visited them eventually and found out the true reality of their dc's achievements.
Very different.
