Ladies of mumsnet please pray for me. Spending the day with MIL. We have just arrived and she’s called me by the ex wife’s name twice already, and my SIL name once. DS has been called by his sibling’s name and has a Christmas card with a letter missing from his name. I think she had also forgotten we were coming!
It’s going to be a long day - send prayers (or gin!)

Let me be the first to suggest she has either dementia or undiagnosed ADHD (in the true spirit of mumsnet!)

Don't respond when she calls you by the ex wife's name.

Make a point of looking away. I know it might be accidental but it's nothing short of irritating, she should take a second to think before she speaks.

Agree with PP. Either way, you will have to go NC or Grey Rock them.

She has always been forgetful, especially with names. She has got worse as she’s gotten older.

My prayers are with you x

In your head repeat “Do not kill them” over and over until the feeling passes.

If that happens to come out of your mouth in front of them….. Well

RunningAwayToJoinTheCircus · 16/12/2023 11:31

Oops! Sorry, I was doing the "mn thing" where on any thread at some point someone suggests one of the two things to explain any and all behaviour from relatives. Was going for light hearted, but if I missed the mark I apologise sincerely.
have an extremely large virtual gin!

Fraaahnces · 16/12/2023 11:32

start calling her by her MIL’s first name. Ask DH what his grandmother’s name was

I have 3 sisters. My dad would always cycle through all the names before getting the right one no matter which sister he was talking to. I feel your pain.
